Eli Reed began his freelance career in 1970. His work then caught the eye of Magnum photos in 1988. He was the first full- time black photographer hired by Magnum. In that same year that Reed photographed the effects poverty had on American children for a film titled “ Poorest in the Land of Plenty.” After this experience Reed began to make stills for motion films, His own video “Getting out “ was shown and the NY film festival honored it in ‘96. Currently Reed works as a clinical professor of photojournalism at the University of Texas. Reed has worked on many different projects be sure to check it out.

Moneta Sleet was an Pulitizer Prize winning photojournalist heavily involved in the civil rights movement. Documenting the struggles and accomplishments of people of color. He produced work on many different topics. Some of the people above may look familiar you to .. well that’s because Sleet also continued working for Ebony and Jet magazine which were magazines dedicated to black beauty.

Many agree that Carrie Mae Weems is the most influential American contemporary artist out there. Weems artwork touches on many things but a few include; sexism, family relationships & class. She does not limit herself to one medium, she also does extraordinary work with tiles, fabric , text and audio.
