Deeply deeply adore the way L&Co didn't take the Fittes Ball as an opportunity to put Lucy in a revealing dress just to tantalize Lockwood or something. Not that that would have been accurate at all to the books, and it would have completely gone against the vibe of the show anyways. But we all know how eager the entertainment industry is to sexualize female bodies and put female characters in uncomfortable situations for the "benefit" of the male characters.
But no. Lucy wore something that she could feel comfortable in, something practical and entirely beautiful. She didn't even wear heels! And when Lockwood came up to the attic and saw her in her dress, he looked at her with obvious wonder. Not blatant lust. (Again, obviously wouldn't have fit with the story but you know.)
Thank you thank you thank you to Jonathan Stroud, Joe Corn-adjacent, and everyone else involved in the production of this show for creating your main female character to be so very real and wonderful.
The world is not prepared for the person I will turn into once Lockwood says "come off it, you know I'd die for you" to Lucy in the show.
The part I appreciate the most in the Lockwood and Co show is how it handles depression and suicidal thoughts in teenagers. As a theme, it’s not often (ever) done well. Lockwood and Co is the only story I can think of that depicts it in a nuanced, realistic, non-romanticized way
but first, before I get into it: [if you’re in crisis or need someone to talk to and don’t want to/can’t use your national hotline, highly recommend Samaritans, genuinely saved my life] okay, let’s go
Lockwood is the most obvious, with his general disregard for his own life and admitted suicidal ideation. Lucy struggles with her self-worth and the intensity of the emotions she’s subjected to. George worries that he doesn’t belong, that there’s something useless or wrong about him. The show depicts these thoughts and feelings in a way that isn’t overblown or dramatized, it’s all but casual. Which is how it happens. Depression or suicidal thoughts don’t crash into you all at once, they creep into your life without you noticing
But more importantly (and again, something I’ve never seen anywhere else), the show also offers counterpoints to those thoughts and feelings. It shows that there is a way out, even though you may feel trapped and hopeless. This is crucial for the show’s target demographic. Bad media depictions of depression or suicide get internalized, contribute to the stigma, and make it harder for people to ask for help. This show doesn’t do that. This show tells its audience that, yes, things are scary and painful and it fucking sucks, but it’s not hopeless. And it says it so well
In the second episode, when Lucy wants to quit, she admits something that I’m almost certain she’s never told anyone
“sometimes I just think I’d be better off dead”
And when I watched this the first time, I expected Lockwood to react the way I’ve seen people react in my own life; with silence or panic or downright dismissal. But he didn’t. He stays calm and he says something that is so so important to hear when you’re struggling under the weight of feelings like this
“I understand that”

Revisiting this point from an earlier post of mine about how much I love that Lockwood & Co. specifically does not do this to Lucy:
Can we TALK for a SECOND about how the writers wrote the whole Towel Scene (which admittedly did not make the final cut but still) and managed to make LOCKWOOD the most uncomfortable out of three?? Because he's a massive dork??? Instead of the girl who's literally standing in a towel in a hall with two boys???
Like they put the love of Lockwood's life in a towel in front of him and rather than taking it as an opportunity to objectify her and make her an object of lust, they turned it into an absolutely hilarious moment that showcases not only how much of a dork Lockwood is, but how SAFE Lucy is in that household. Yes it's funny and very awkward but it doesn't broach the sickening feeling of a girl being exposed and unsafe and objectified.
I can't even begin to express how comforting it is, the way this series lets Lucy be safe in this area. I wish I could explain it more clearly but the words aren't wording. Y'all get it.
YES! Exactly this. George didn’t even bat an eyelid - not in a “because he doesn’t fancy her way” because even then he could have made it awkward. He’s just like “of course she’s in a towel, she’s in her own home and about to take a shower”. And Lockwood. Oh Lockwood. They know. They both know. He’s not being awkward because he’s seeing his crush/love of his life in a towel and she doesn’t feel the same as him. He’s awkward because he doesn’t want to risk making her uncomfortable. It’s not just them and she’s vulnerable (because she’s in a fucking towel) and it’s just not the time or place. It’s not a locklyle moment, it’s a Portland Row moment and he knows it but he can’t help how he feels so he’s just being awkward as fuck. Oh my boy.
yes yes yes yes yes yes i love

I am never going to write this but a Hunger Games AU for Lockwood and Co would be so interesting. Like Lockwood and Lucy end up being the tributes from the same district, Lucy by sheer bad lock and Lockwood because he actively schemed to have his name put in as many times as possible by taking food off the capitol to redistribute to the district. And Lucy has to deal with the fact that her fellow tribute doesn't seem to care that he is about to play in a death game so long as he gets to make a statement while she is terrified and just wishes she got to live a quiet life.
Oh their reasons for being in the games are actually SO accurate tho. I can definitely see Lockwood repeatedly entering just to help the people of his district both as an act of rebellion against the capitol that took his parents and sister from him. Meanwhile Lucy being reaped out of bad luck or maybe because her mother enters her multiple times for more rations even though they don't even necessarily need more with just Lucy and her mom being left at home.
Moreso I can even see it be well known secret among the district that Lockwood puts his name in so many times every year. His kindness is something Lucy would always admire about him from afar even though it would terrify her how easily he does it and for strangers no less. Then its not until they meet before the games when she realizes how deep his death wish really runs. Meanwhile, Lockwood is casual about it as ever, going so far as to put his own life on the line to protect Lucy repeatedly. He's absolutely going to make a statement with his death but he's going to protect Lucy with everything he has and give her the best chance of winning while he's at it. These are his only two goals in the games and it drives Lucy insane with fear and frustration as she tries to save him just as he does her.
Lucy hates the idea of leaving the arena without Lockwood while Lockwood is resigned to doing just that; saving the girl he's fallen for. But to make sure Lucy makes it to the end, he keeps himself alive too and then it is the end and it's just them: the last two tributes. And Lockwood begs Lucy to kill him because really that's the only thing he'd want out of life now. He's done everything he needed. He's with the girl he loves. He's made his statement too. He's survived everything the capital has thrown at him and will be dying on his own terms, reuniting with his parents.
But Lucy doesn't have anything to go back to without Lockwood either. Just a wretched hag of a mother who will make Lucy's life miserable by leeching off Lucy's trauma and the cold blood cash she will be paid for it. So instead Lucy suggests they both poison themselves. She'd rather that to winning without him.
And Lockwood is against it, of course he is. Lucy's got so much left to live for while he hasn't. But Lucy is adamant. The only thing she'd want to live for is standing with her in the same hopeless situation she is in. She'd rather walk with him to the other side than brave the world alone. Perhaps it'll even be quiet there, nice, peaceful. They'd both be better off and they'd both be together, with the one person who understands and cares for them.
And so finally Lockwood relents. They're about to do it, about to die together and die for each other, and thats when the gamemaker announces them both winners in an urgency to keep the capitol from losing credibility in the face of two innocent young children who just so happen to be in love. What comes after is far from the quiet and peaceful life Lucy wants, but Lockwood is there to take the brunt of the media scrutiny, shielding her from it as he did in the arena. She's his new family, someone to turn to and be angry with instead of staying up to brave the nightmares and hurt and anger alone.
She still has him and he has her. Its not good, none of it is, not the way they lived or how they almost died or even the conditions that led them to survive. But it is enough.
Maybe one of Lockwood’s parents was a Victor. They were killed for disobedience and Lockwood lives alone in this grand old house in the Victor’s Village with too much money and nothing to do, so he just gives it away to everyone and tries to find a meaningful way to die. Gravedigger Sykes could be like a Haymitch character, too.

the relationship between pinterest and tumblr is so funny to me. like, how did the recipe-home renovation app become the black market for recent tumblr posts?? it’s like all the other apps are attending the tumblr funeral and then there’s pinterest lurking in the back waiting for the body to emerge from the casket
Lockwood: Nothing good comes from letting people in.
Also Lockwood: *gives Lucy his childhood room* *tells Lucy he wants her to be a part of his dreams for the agency like 4 hours after meeting her* *fights for her to have a place in the agency* *intentionally tries to share the spotlight with her (unfortunately against her wishes)* *gives Lucy a necklace that clearly means a lot to him* *brags to everyone who will listen about how amazing she is* *prepares and gives her toast unprompted* *looks at her like he never wants to look at anything BUT her* *checks in with her to make sure she's okay in the middle of cases and suggests they step back if she needs a minute* *holds Lucy's hand* *holds Lucy's hand* *holds Lucy's hand* *holds Lucy's hand* *hol-

An observation
Fics from writers who's read the books before the show are usually (not all tho) Lucy-centered with the books somewhat middle-school, warm Portland Row vibe and Lucy's sarcastic view of everyone and the world
Fics from writers who's only seen the show are Lockwood's-centered (also not all tho), feels like a colder harder world with Lockwood's less than enthusiastic view of himself and the world, usually with angst and feels a little more adult (some are downright adult genre heh)
🤭🤭
the smut honestly makes me so uncomfy. leave the children alone! “aging them up” doesn’t change the fact they were originally written as children and ur trying to use them for your self insert p0rn
(also this isn’t addressed to you op, just people in general. why do we gotta make everything s3xual 😭😭)
