Friendships v relationships. Can we have it all?

Spoke to a friend tonight who seems to be losing friends at an alarming rate. The reason? He feels when they enter a romantic relationship they sacrifice time that they would otherwise have spent with him, to be with their new partner.

Where and when is this acceptable? If at all? In a world where time is so precious, how do we divide it to accommodate our own needs, as well as the needs of those around us?
