it meant the world to me as an eleven year old blonde girl to see myself in annabeth. seeing a female character be the obvious and natural leader plus be respected and celebrated for her intelligence is something i’d never seen before. it changed everything for me.
how fucked up can you be to deny black girls that same experience. white women should not have a monopoly on annabeth. times have changed and so have the people who need her most. have the grace to step aside instead of telling literal children they don’t deserve representation.
the difference between the male and female gaze is that i watched season one of bridgerton with my parents but i WOULD NOT watch season two with them

this blog went to shit ages ago so i’m just going to post what i want
The shadow and bone casting of Jessie Mei Li is a significant step forward. Even when a character is explicitly stated as a poc we still end up with Scarlett Johansson or Tilda Swinton somehow being cast in their role, (I’m sure we all remember those disasters.) That a character who is of unspecified race was cast with an asian actress may seem like a small gesture but it’s huge with the usual racism that runs rampant in Hollywood. Jessie you’re amazing and I’m so glad that you’re the one bringing Alina to life.
i don’t mean any insult to kit young, but his upcoming portrayal of jesper in the shadow and bone netflix series is yet another disappointing example of film industry colorism
ok so even if we don’t talk about how i forgot jesper was mixed in the books and therefore could completely be light skinned the kit young slander was unnecessary and idiotic.
like i really thought i could come on here and disrespect this man.
psa that if you aren’t following the Bridgerton musical’s progress on tiktok you’re missing out! the username of the creator is @abigailbarlowww for anyone wondering.
Bridgerton caught the interest of many as a show that explores an alternate history of the U.K. where race segregation was ended and something closer to equality achieved much earlier than in our world. While that is no doubt something worthy of a blog post something different caught my attention. i never thought i’d say this about what’s basically a georgian era soap opera but Bridgerton has amazing female characters.
1. all and i mean every single one of the female characters have different goals and ambitions and none of the life choices are portrayed as less than. Eloise’s dreams of independence and supporting herself are in sharp contrast to her sister Daphne’s dreams of starting a family yet both life styles are portrayed as valid and none of the characters are thrown under the bus for being either overly or underly traditional feminine.
2. the strong female characters are strong female characters. they’re not male characters with a thin veneer of sexualization painted on at the last second. Daphne’s mother is an excellent example of this as her strength comes from her femininity and the relationships she’s formed with other women. when crisis strikes (i won’t spoil anything) she comes to the rescue and remains a woman as she does it. it’s rare these days to see traditional feminine values and strengths treated as valuable.
3. the men with whom our main female characters form relationships with are men that respect them. whether it’s mother son, or wife husband we see respect and teamwork being used to solve problems and throughout the show the men learn to listen to the women in their lives instead of immediately assuming that they are better suited to solve the problem.
with gorgeous costumes, a creative soundtrack that mixes classical instruments and contemporary music, and enough drama to keep us entertained as we try to escape 2020 this is definitely a show i would recommend to anyone looking for escapism.

SPNGate: A Timeline
Here’s my attempt at a full timeline of the events leading up to, during, and after the complete debacle that was the Supernatural series finale complete with sources. I’ll be updating it regularly as more stuff happens/comes to light. If you think I’ve missed anything or gotten anything wrong, please do send me an ask. Otherwise, enjoy!
at this time i won’t be speaking about the situation with supernatural as i don’t feel that i know all the facts and there’s enough controversy already, but i hope this link helps you to form your opinion.
after taking love simon one of the only positive representations of lgbtqia+ characters off, the least netflix could’ve done is stayed quiet. instead they produced a movie that was somehow offensive, boring, and badly written at the same time. the prom movie is offensive not just to the lgbtqia+ community but humanity as a whole. i understand the goal was to make a hopeful joy filled movie, which is why it’s such a shame it came to this.
the script for the prom tried to pull off campy but was just trashy instead. the music? somehow even worse. though it has the constant singing of a musical none of the major characters had the dancing to go with it. in fact everything from the plot to the lighting change during dance with you is completely amateur.
james corden has no place in a musical. after the fiasco of CATS you’d think we wouldn’t be forced to watch him preform but once again he ruins everything he touches.
ariana debose, kerry washington, and jordan micheal key do their best to save the show but with the rest of the supposed “all star cast” crashing and burning around them they spend more time trying to cover for the failings of their fellow actors then showing their true talent.
the broadway stars as characters are not only unnecessary but invasive and controlling. their interference in emma’s life is a publicity stunt and nothing more. watching a group of adults force what they want onto a teenager while she’s vulnerable is more than a little disturbing. plus isn’t the straight savior trope getting old? a little interesting that the movie condemns those that support lgbtqia+ only for publicity and yet that’s the reason they make all their “diverse” movies.
most of the characters are walking stereotypes and the narrative that lgbtqia+ individuals should forgive their bigoted parents because of blood relation or be spokespeople for their sexuality is harmful and even dangerous.
the ending was cute, and the finale was definitely some of the better music but unfortunately i can’t look past what it took to get there.
the fictional sitcom “talk to the hand” would’ve been far more entertaining. clearly musical adaptations aren’t working out. next time netflix originals should stick to what they’re actually good at: guilty pleasure tv shows.
