“She hated people who came too near to her. Like a wild thing, she wanted her distance.”
— D. H. Lawrence, from The Complete Works; “The Rainbow,” wr. c. 1919
FFXIVWrite 2020 Prompt 25: Wish (Atropos)
She sat sideways on the hard wooden bed, her legs pulled up and crossed, her back to the wall. The bed was too small for her height and she slept better sitting up anyway, but she wasn’t sleeping now. At the moment, she was looking out the high window and considering the clouds scudding by.
“****. What do you wish for most, in all the world?”
“To represent the organization well.” She had replied instantly, without really thinking about it.
Her companion had wrinkled his nose and shaken his head, dark hair long enough it fell in his eyes. He was laying with his head on his arm, facing her, both of them still sweaty and nude and a little winded. Technically, the foundlings weren’t supposed to form romantic relationships, but they had been drunk and he had been just the right kind of pushy, and she didn’t think it counted because it certainly wasn’t a romance. Just the fulfilling of a need.
He was looking up at her expectantly and she realized she had missed whatever it was he had said. “I’m sorry, what?” she asked.
“I meant outside the organization. What *you* wish for. In your heart of hearts. What is it you want in this world, ****?” He had repeated, reaching out and touching her cheek tenderly.
The touch was nice, but confusing, and for reasons she didn’t fully comprehend she felt herself blushing at it before giving a small shake of her head and shrugging one bare shoulder. “I don’t...wish for anything like that. There’s nothing I want. I don’t think about things that way.” She’d replied, then regretted answering honestly as she saw a flash of disappointment on his face. She didn’t understand why he looked at her that way, or why he sighed. But he brushed his fingers through her hair and that was nice, so she cuddled up closer to him.
“...You never say what I expect you to say.” He said after a long silence and there was disappointment in his voice, too. She felt something, an emotion she couldn’t really name or encompass with words, before finally replying.
“I’m sorry.”
He didn’t respond, but he did kiss her cheek.
The Viera sighed, ears folded back. She hadn’t had a job in moons and she was running low on funds. The organization could help, but she needed to find work. Maybe then she’d stop remembering these things. Maybe she’d be able to put all the ghosts back in their graves where they belonged.
One could wish, right?
FFXIVWrite 2020 Prompt 17: Fade (Atropos)
They say all things fade with time.
Sometimes, time just gives them more ways to hurt you.
Atropos sat at a workbench, steadily running an oiled cloth over the barrel of a rifle. The polishing motion was all muscle-memory at this point and it allowed her mind to wander. Usually, the orchestrion would be on, playing at a moderately high volume, something for her thoughts to latch onto so they didn’t go to the dark places, the places kept behind walls so thick she could barely hear the screaming.
The weather of Ul’dah was a lot like Rabanastre. When the nights got cold like this, she could feel the deep, deep ache in her back. Tonight, it was bad, and she was forced to stop her work and stand, raising her arms over her head (she was tall enough that she could almost place her hands flat on the ceiling when she did so) and stretching back, back, back, until her hands landed on the floor and her ears brushed the rug. A kick, a flexing of tight core muscles, and the slow backbend would end with her on her feet again. Then she would stretch side to side, twisting so slowly she could feel every muscle. The scar burned before the hurt started to fade away.
The memories, though, the memories didn’t.
Running, bent low to the ground, using one hand to occasionally give herself just a little more forward momentum. Bombs falling around her, throwing earth and stones into the air before they came pelting down. Her back to a piece of fallen magitek, a pair of bladed knuckles in her fists. The commander, a flint-eyed Roegadyn man of maybe fifty summers, looking over at her with his gaze shadowed under his helm. It was just the two of them, out of a score.
“See you on the other side, ****” He might have said. The words were faded out, half-imagined. Her name for that mission was long, long lost.
She nodded, then waited for him with his sword and shield to move out from behind the wreckage and attack. One breath, two-
The tell-tale whirring of a magitek cannon was the only warning she had and she leapt up and forward as far as her legs could throw her, the piece of plating she’d been hiding behind exploding into shrapnel. A piece a handspan wide caught her just below the ribs and she hit the dirt face-first, the wind knocked out of her. Coughing, choking, she’d pulled herself into a ball then forced herself up to crawl through the blood and the shit and the mud and the bodies. She couldn’t rise- she didn’t dare. But she could no more lay down and die than the pieces of men and women around her could pull themselves back together and walk again.
She couldn’t remember how they found her, it was all faded into black after that. Empty black and a deep scar that ached when the weather went cold.
FFXIVWrite 2020 Prompt 3: Muster (Atropos)
CW: Death, blood
A picture, a sketch, a Viera woman standing tall and awkward in the back with three Hyur and three miqo'te arrayed around her, their arms wrapped around her and each other. All of them are smiling, even the Viera. The picture is much creased, faded, tattered at the edges, yellowing with time.
"MUSTER UP!"
The phrase was bellowed through the underground tunnels of the small sanctum where the organization made it's home. The young men and women that made up the newest group of foundlings stumbled out of their simple rooms and met up with each other in the halls, jostling and leaning on each other. They had snuck out the night before, gone to one of the cheaper bordellos, gotten shit-faced and wrecked on cheap alcohol, somnus, and aether-dusted mushrooms. Their eyes were still bloodshot and the bellowing voice rang like bells of doom in their still-addled heads.
"*****, c'mon!" called Matthias, a young Hyuran man, hooking an arm around her waist and steering her towards the dusty subterranean training room. "Eyes open and shoulders back." He teased, slurring a little as he mimicked the voice of their arms-master.
She couldn't remember his face, or her name. Static in her ears, a blank blandness where his face would be. Dark eyes. She remembered dark eyes. They had dust on them and had become like raisins in the heat, wrinkled and lifeless.
She smiled at him sheepishly and let him guide her, her long limbs showing a disturbing tendency to tangle up and trip her. They met up with another Hyur, then a miqo'te woman who wrapped her tail around the Viera's wrist like a soft silk bangle and groaned dramatically as they passed through a small square of sunlight cast by a narrow, street-level window.
Tan fur, tan under the rusty brown that spiked it into unnatural spines, sticking straight up in the sun. What was brown on the fur was red on the mosaic, spreading in loops and spatters.
Another two miqo'te met them in the training room. Brother and sister.
Cousins? She couldn't remember. They hadn't found enough of the bodies to tell which was which so they had burned them on the same pyre in the pauper's field. She remembered the smell.
A Hrothgar man stepped into the training hall with the last two Hyur at his heels, both young men. All the youths arranged themselves loosely at attention, their spines snapping straight and their heads lifted. Despite their bleary eyes and their pounding skulls, they were proud. They were capable.
They were gone. The underground tunnels were gone. A traitor's bomb, they'd said. Imperial technology, they'd said. All of Rabanastre had been targeted, they’d said. Nothing personal.
She folded the sketch up carefully along it's creases and slipped it back into it's hiding place. She shed no tears- those were as lost as her name. Turning onto her side, she turned down the flame in the lamp and closed her eyes.
"MUSTER UP!"
FFXIVWrite 2020 Prompt: Sway (Komyo)
(Companion piece to This )
The dark-scaled, brown skinned young Au Ra woman was the only one like her in the dance class and the places around her were noticeably empty. The teacher at the front of the class did not care to correct this and so it remained the way of things, as it had been for years, now. It was shortly after dawn that the class began. Komyo, an older student at this point, knelt at the front with her fan laid on the tatami before her, so carefully and delicately placed that it would seem to be made of a material that would shatter if looked at too hard. She bowed, her fingertips lightly touching each other and barely touching the mat, her hair falling forward to obscure her face momentarily. Then she picked up her fan and rose gracefully to her feet. The music began, and she entered the steps of the dance.
As her body moved, her mind wandered.
Step, slide one foot before the other, tilt her head to the left-
Father and Akihito never returned home last night. It was unlike them- breakfast was usually a family affair.
Snap the fan open, the sound sharp and startling like a bird exploding from the brush. Raise the curved edge to her cheek and lower her lashes, averting crimson eyes away-
Something felt wrong. Something felt off. They would have sent word if they were going to be away for long. And she couldn’t feel Aki.
Step forward, bend at the knee, smooth and graceful. Let the edge of your sleeve brush the tatami before turning in a small circle, remaining bent, then rising and lifting the fan above your head, turning it in your hands then sweeping it down.
She couldn’t feel Aki. She could always feel Aki. Something was wrong.
The music picked up and Komyo moved with it, the steps exceptionally precise, every tilt of her head, gesture of her fingers, even the curve of her tail fitting the dance, telling a story. It was in the final steps that the world tilted suddenly and she swayed in place. Her fan clattered to the floor and the teacher’s attention snapped to her. The Hyuran woman snapped a sharp “Otome!” at Komyo, but she couldn’t hear it. The world was rocking, the earth had become unsteady, and it was all she could do to keep her feet planted and sway like a reed in the storm as her brother’s anguished scream echoed horribly in her head.
Oh... oh no. No, no, no, nononononono.... ((Tagging @talesfromthegameff14 for their boy Akihito))
FFXIVWrite 2020 Prompt: Crux (Atropos)
CW: Violence, blood, death They couldn't see her eyes behind the low visor of the slouched hat she wore. They likely weren't even looking- the barrel of her gun was still smoking and the crowd of people had started to break into small pieces, like the sparks of a fireworks rocket. They wouldn't be able to see that her eyes were wide, too much white showing, shocked.
The gunshot had been so loud.
She had been warned that it would be like this, her first job. That everything would be too loud. Too bright. Too real. That the gun would kick like an angry chocobo and her shoulder would ache. That the stench of gunpowder would make her want to retch. She'd been prepared for blood- blood was an old friend, the coppery-rich smell of it a companion from her earliest days. The time on the shooting range had only been a weak approximation of this. Wet work, they called it. Accurate, if lacking in imagination.
Assassination. That was the other name. That was a name with imagination. Too much imagination- conjuring images of a rogue's gallery (haha) licking the blades of sharpened knives that flashed in the dark.
"Wet work" suited her better. It really defined the crux of the matter. Wet. Work. Messy, bloody, piss-stained, shit-covered, viscera-stinking WORK. A job. Just a job. Anyone could do a job. Millions of people on this star did jobs every day. Keep it in your mind, Atropos. This is a job. Wet. Work.
The man's body slumped in the souq and she walked towards him, crouching down next to the body and riffling through his clothes to find the small seal he carried on a gold chain, pinned in one of his pockets. Checking the seal, she snapped the chain cleanly and tucked it into a pocket before standing and leveling her gun down. The next blast of the big barrel erased his head into a fine mist, eliminating his identity from this world and spattering her with the remains of what had surely been a brilliant criminal mind.
She turned, wiped her face clean with a shrug of one shoulder, and walked into the alleyways that led away from the souq.

The Black Footed cat is the smallest wild cat in Africa and one of the smallest wild cats in the world.
Here’s an adult kitty for size comparison:
too smoll
OK but you can’t mention my all-time favorite cat without also mentioning that these little motherfuckers are legendary for being 1000% ready to throw down with anyone at any time, they’ve literally been seen trying to fight a giraffe and are known to successfully bring down sheep by getting underneath them and ripping their bellies open like what the fuck, chill
Their name in Afrikaans means “anthill tiger” because they’ll hide inside a hollowed out anthill and then jump out and try to rip your face off
They are perfect and I love them
Aw, look at these little murder muffins.
smallest and deadliest wild cat. Observed at a 60% success rate in hunting, and averaging a kill every fifty minutes—a lion might succeed in hunting twenty, twenty-five percent of the time. Their small, energetic bodies require a rate of a-murder-per-hour in order to sustain their metabolisms.
(“miershoop” can also mean “termite mound”, which is one of their preferred places to sleep)
All the rage and power of a regular hunting cat condensed into a baby
