Usage of Arabic Terms of Endearment
A run-down of the various terms and how and when to use them.
I get the appeal of calling someone ‘my life’ but hayati is not said nearly as often as the fandom has made it out to be. It’s not really the equivalent of ‘baby’ or ‘honey’, it’s a more intense term, is what I’m saying. Habibi is though.
There are tiers to terms of endearment and I’m going to try and break them down.
1. Habibi means ‘my beloved/darling’, in the relationship-sense it can mean ‘my lover’ / ‘my boyfriend’. It is the most commonly-used term to denote affection.
Like, do you have any idea how many Arabic love songs include habibi? If I made a compilation of sound-bites from every song that included ‘habibi’ it would be ten hours-long.
In every day conversations and among thoughtless pet names, it would be habibi.
It requires a different mood/intent/occasion. It can also be used for non-romantic relationships, like friends, pets, siblings or even acquaintances – you know how there are some really friendly people who call everyone sweetie/love?
2. Hayati would be more emotionally-charged and tender scenes, like after Nicky was killed by Keane or when Joe was waxing poetic about his love for him in the van.
Habibi vs Hayati is like the difference between calling someone babe / sweetie / love and calling them love of my life / my heart.
3. In a flirty sense, you can use ya amar – comparing someone to the Moon is the highest compliment. There’s also ya ‘assal (honey) usually used in regards to someone being sweet i.e. more personality than looks. Same goes for sokkar (sugar). And, of course, ya (g)jamil (Beauty), you can also combine it into ya amar ya (g)jamil (Beautiful Moon).
4. More intensely romantic (can be used for strong familial love) terms include ‘Omri (my entire life) and Hobi (my love) Rohi (my soul), Albi (my heart), and to a lesser extent ya ‘eyooni (my eyes) sometimes the three can be said in succession habibi, albi, rohi…
You can even make combinations like roh albi (soul of my heart), habib albi (beloved of my heart) and hayat albi (life of my heart).
5. And if you want to get real gushy and cutesy Haboob (darling), Amoori (Moon), ‘Assool (Honey) are like babycakes, sweetie pie, honeybunches etc. Usage depends on the tone, you can either be very lovey-dovey or purposefully cringey.
Unless you’re using babytalk to a literal baby.
6. Those can all also be used with heavy sarcasm/mockery, like when you’re about to tear someone a new one you could be like ‘Ya habibi, ya albi, ya rohi, I’m begging you to stop being such a moron’.
So, yeah, in memes and every day usage it’s habibi, in cheesy flirty scenes it’s ya sokkar/ya ‘assal. In compliments it’s ya amar and in more loving and focused moments it’s rohi, albi, hayati, etc.
(You can use most of these as platonic/familial)
7. There’s also different words for Love. Generally, it’s Hob –> Habibi/Hobi and I Love You is Ana Bahebak. In poetic (romantic) terms, there’s Hawa (Passion/Attraction) like ‘I’m a fool for you’ and ‘Ishq (Ardor) – think Mr. Darcy’s ‘I love you most ardently’ can both denote the process of falling in love, conjugated as Ahwak and A’shiqaq respectively. There’s also Shoq (Longing/Yearning) which sounds like Shok the word for thorns.
But outside of poetry and songs, I Love You is typically Hob / Ana Bahebak. It’s the clearest and most precise.

i personally really dig the twst hc that there is a language barrier between yuu and the people at nrc on account of them literally being from a separate dimension, i think it’s fun to play around with and imagine what interactions could come from that
though with that being said… say the mc’s native language was french…. would they just be able to understand rook and vice versa..?
yuu and rook relationship based off the fact that he’s literally the only person who actually understands what they’re saying and they don’t need to worry about any barrier between one another
hmm parallels...
honestly both these scenes are pretty important and it's kinda wild to me how little they're talked about., i think it really highlights not only how truly guilt ridden and sorrowful rook was in the aftermath of vil's overblot, but his HEAVY suppression of those emotions as well
on the one hand you have the scene from book 6, where rook opens up a bit about how the guilt from vil's ob (and not stepping up to stop it) plagues him quite badly, even though he knows there's a high likelihood that vil still would've overblotted either way. it seems extremely clear that he hasn't told anyone how he's been feeling, and his overwhelming guilt getting to the point of causing him to be continuously scared awake by nightmares of it
while with the other scene in book 7, he was talking to the main group about vil and how the struggles in his life have caused significant development for him (vil) despite the pain he's faced, and then rook just suddenly falls apart. he breaks down, crying about how vil's happiness in the dream is really just shallow and simulated. growth comes from struggle, and knowing how important growth is to vil, he recognizes that any "happiness" he's is feeling in his dream could never be a truly genuine type of happiness. and that crushes him.
both of these scenes are incredibly interesting because the mask sort of cracks a bit? we know rook is someone who tends to keep his deeper negative emotions locked away from others. he tries to deal with it on his own, not seeming to reach out to anyone, even when he evidently needs it. he avoids and dislikes depending on other people (seemingly even vil) and struggles to repress his troubles all by himself instead.
you know, Rook should hang out with Light Music Club members more
like, Rook with Lilia? theatrics and fun shenanigans; Rook and Cater? deep dives into ~* Aesthetics *~ and photo composition; Rook and Kalim? mutual enabling of spreading joy and appreciation of whoever
i want them in a room together. i want them to plan a festival or an art event or anything of the like. they're gonna hunt all the unwilling participants and trick goad them into going all out. it's gonna be fun, it's gonna be chaotic, and it's gonna be glorious.
and maybe inbetween the work they'll be having little heart to hearts about the deep dark things they don't tell other people
anyway, Pop Music Club + Rook! i think it should happen in some fun shape or form that hides surprising insights into characters and their interpersonal dynamics
I do wonder if Lilia and Malleus telling Silver his life is short contributed to his guilt and feelings of insignificance…

Silver is the only human in a fae family. He’s been told that his life is short since he was little & learned he was human. After 7 where Lilia is confirmed to live at least 200 more years w/ Malleus, how does he feel knowing how temporary he is in the lives of the people loves?
Silver feels immense guilt over Lilia taking care of him when he ‘doesn’t have to’ & was destroyed when he learned abt his origins. Does he feel like he needs to right the wrongs done & make up for the sins of his bio family? In book 8 he still doesnt seem the nicest to himself
Silver constantly brings up how much of a burden his sleep spell is. It is a blessing but now gives him trouble now which should define it as a curse. If it’s leaving, how has his life & how people treat him changed? Is he still ridiculed for his condition?
Following up on that ^ would twst ever reframe Silver's sleep spell as less of a gag and more serious as Silver treats it? It has parallels to narcolepsy. How was the spell on him so long after waking up? If the ring kept the spell on him, what happens now that his ring is gone?
Silver struggles to properly express his emotions to anyone outside of Diasomnia. Is there a reason why it's hard for him to smile, and why is he shy about smiling in front of others? How has his different social skills affected him outside of his dorm vignette?
Silver is quick to self-sacrifice as seen in events & main story. With Lilia trying to teach him to survive no matter what, why is it so easy for him to throw his life away? Is he just selfless? How will this affect his life as a knight?
In book 7, he witnessed Lilia consider killing him as a baby, learned his bio family did horrible things, had a mental breakdown, essentially attempted suicide, hallucinated himself as Dawn getting attacked by Lilia, and witnessed his dad's death, how has he coped with this?
Silver is over 400 years old, spent more than he will ever live awake in ageless sleep, was forgotten about by the world, left to sleep forever or die alone in that castle, is so far removed from his original time and life, how does he cope with the existential dread of this?
Silver's bio family are originally from the Land of Dawning (Sage's island is part of this) his grandfather was cured of illness and still lived there. Is some of Silver's bio family still around, are they still royalty, did they know about him, does anyone even want him back?
Silver had 3 guardian fairies before Lilia, Malleus, and Sebek. Did they ever want to come back for Silver if they're still alive, ARE they still alive, would Silver be interested in reconnecting? They clearly gave him fairy gifts, did they leave him anything else?
Silver grew up isolated in the woods only ever talking to his family and animals. Lilia still expected him to 'return' to humans but he knows nothing about them outside of NRC. Would he ever want to feel more connected to humans or isolate himself in the woods again after NRC?
Many faes including Baur and probably Maleficia still hate humans. Mount Dread made him feel ill climbing it. The senate still exist. Is being Malleus's knight even safe for Silver? What if his origins get discovered by the wrong person?
If Silver's only desire to be a knight came from protecting and serving Malleus, Lilia & people in need, what does he do when that job puts him in danger. He already would save someone else instead of himself, would he ever consider another job outside of what he wanted as a kid?
How would Silver deal with potential vitriol directed at him by faes who do not want a short-lived human knight around their prince. Or fae that think he's fine because he's basically 'fae enough' based on how he's raised. Would he ever meet other humans in Briar Valley?
Is there possibly anyone out there, either day fae or night fae, that might've seen Dawn's face and recognized Silver as being the lost prince everyone was talking about after 7? If social media is yapping about a lost prince, do people want to know who he is?
Silver's hobbies were limited by his sleep spell and his guilt/duty to dedicating his life solely to other people (malleus & Lilia), is there something he has a passion for outside of training or is it all he has because of how he was raised/isolated?
After surviving 400 years and having parts of the sleep spell still stuck to him after 18 years, would something bad happen to him once it leaves? Is there any after effects to living so long? Are there other humans who were spelled to sleep for hundreds of years?
Exploring how he traverses dreams, can theoretically perform his magic forever so long as he stays asleep, can meet people he doesn't know through dreams, can cross into dreams from DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS too. Michael Mouse..

tbh im really curious as to specifically why rook covers up his freckles. it's clearly shown to be something he just chose to start doing on his own (vil did NOT make him cover them that is misinformation!!) and ive been pondering this for a little while because rook hasn't talked about his freckles himself that much, but i believe it stems from rook just generally not seeing his own beauty in nearly the same high regard he does others
for all the preaching rook does about others' beauty, there's a specific detail - he NEVER talks about himself in the same way. confidence in his abilities sure, but even then, whenever he's directly praised for his strengths, he's shown to regularly shift it onto complimenting his peers too instead of just himself; This seems to go more beyond rook just having a strong sense of humility as well.
rook has a very apparent lack of self worth. we see this through many aspects of his character, primarily his disregard for his own livelihood and ignorance towards his safety, but this is also shown through his opinions of himself as well. furthering this point, in rook's savanaclaw portrait voiceline, he says that he had even forgotten what he looked like before he transferred, because he had always ignored his reflection in mirrors.
we also see this through the several moments where rook actively blames himself for things that are out of his control, for example in book 7, where, even after waking up crying and confused, he blames himself for forgetting those memories despite having no clue what what was going on. Or in book 6, where rook talks about dealing with persistent nightmares due to his guilt about vil's overblot, even though he knows it's extremely unlikely he could've prevented it even if he stepped in more.
i think this is also a part of what makes his and vil's relationship so special too; vil taught him how to care for himself, and in the process taught him how to love those aspects of himself as well. the story from their first year (where vil helps rook get dressed up for a neige event) shows this especially well - rook says that it was the first time he had ever felt that happy about how he looked, and from that point on began taking pride and appreciation in his appearance and care for himself.
but there'll always be a part of rook that views himself as lesser. he seems to be much more critical towards his own self, and this extends to his appearance as well. he doesn't view himself in nearly the same adoration he does the people around him, and i think him hiding his freckles may come from that.
another aspect to this is that i think it could be possible that, to him, his freckles may also serve as a reminder to who he once was. switching to pomefiore meant that rook was no longer alone. he learnt not only to care for himself, but what it was like to have friends and people who truly care for him too.
I think it'd be funny if you accidentally used the phrase "I'm gonna hunt you for sport" on Rook and he just stares at you getting all blushy because oh my? You're saying that here?? In public??? Mon Cherie how bold of you! And it takes you a second before it clicks and you explode into a burning blush flustered.
imagine person a and b can be doing anything (from acting cute to outright fighting) and c will take the opportunity to snap pictures of them. c has a huge album on their phone that's just a bajillion photos of a and b together. c loves looking through it when they're feeling down or lonely.
