what possessed the amazing devil to put the line “we were gods”/”we were kids” in battle cries like hello?? the switch that happens there??? the tone of the whole song is that joey’s upbeat and madeleine’s the defeatist one and that one line changes the whole dynamic? madeleine going “we were gods!” with such conviction and heart and joey answering “we were kids” with such a level of heart-wrenching reality that you’re completely taken out of the song for a second? anyway i’m crying in my bathtub about it
