The World Health Organization is warning of an “alarming rise” of measles cases in Europe that is only accelerating. There were 42,200 measles cases across 41 WHO European Region member states in 2023 — up from 941 cases reported in all of 2022, according to WHO. The organization said in a release Wednesday that the rise in cases has accelerated in recent months, and they are expected to continue to rise unless urgent measures are taken. “Vaccination is the only way to protect children from this potentially dangerous disease. Urgent vaccination efforts are needed to halt transmission and prevent further spread,” Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, said in a statement.

I feel like a lot of "professionalism discourse" is actually presentability politics rather than a discussion on actual practice. Professionalism is about being responsible and proficient in your field of expertise, presentability is the thing conservatives falsely equate to it because apparently seeing 1/10th of a tattoo is the same as being thrown into a ditch from a speeding truck (note the double standard when it comes to this as well - only certain people are being targeted, and while it seems it's linked to specific jobs, it's really not)

Every writer needs to see this because I’m really tired of otherwise competent novels in which a two year old is like “mother dearest I do believe I am quite frightened” or conversely they’re supposed to be five and going “me hungie!!!”

Remember that these are only guidelines. Some kids don’t talk at all until they’re 2 or 3 and then bust out with full sentences. My grandfather didn’t walk until he was 3 bc of aftereffects of whooping cough. MK used to say things like “me hungie” to try to be cute or when throwing a wobbler. Kids are complicated and individuals and these are only general guidelines.

Not perceiving emotional tones of voice is a key social challenge for children with autism. New research indicates the cause.

Children with autism have trouble identifying emotional tones in speech because of differences in a brain region that processes social information, research shows.

The findings, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, offer an explanation for the neurological origin of a key social challenge in autism. They also provide clues as to the type of therapy that might help, according to the researchers.

“Children typically learn to map certain sounds in people’s voices onto particular emotions,” says the study’s co-lead author, Daniel Abrams, clinical associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford School of Medicine.

“If Mom or Dad is unhappy, a little kid will know that before understanding all the words,” Abrams says, noting that young children recognize slow, low-pitched speech as showing sadness. “But kids with autism have trouble mapping vocal features onto emotion. Before this study, we didn’t know why the brains of people with autism have a roadblock for identifying and recognizing these vocal cues.”
