“I am an only child and my family had always told me to 'prosper and populate the family'. When I realized I was gay, I wished I had not been born." Yuki, from Japan, eventually came out to his family: “They were devastated at first but gradually became supportive and suggested that I move to a place where gays are more accepted, somewhere I could raise kids in a committed relationship.” With his move to Canada and then The US, he found a level of openess, but also "a subtle form of racism." “I think one day Cameroonian justice will do its job, that is to say, find the killers of Lembembe Ohena Eric.” Alice speaks about the death of her brother Eric, who was a LGBT activist in Cameroon. Eric was brutally tortured and murdered. His bones were broken and his body maimed. "in Ghana if you're gay then you're deemed an abomination, sick and preverited and most of the time I'm church when the preacher speaks on the subject it's always the same THING ‘if you are gay then you're going to hell’ because of this I can't even go to church cause EVERYTIME I enter the house god I feel ashamed but I still pray cause in my heart I know that god still loves me no matter what.” Kofi (not his real name) is a gay high school student from Ghana. At school he is bullied, in church he is told that to be gay is evil, at home, his father has told him he will kill him if he finds out he is gay. He knows the way ahead is not easy for him: “I didn 't even know what to call myself at first but thanks to Chris Colfer from Glee, I knew who and what I was and AM, I learned immediately that I would have to hide who I am in order to stay alive… one day I will leave Ghana and start over on same far-off land where me being gay will be a Cause for celebration and I will no longer have to hide.” Kofi shared his story with the #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign. Who are the police protecting when they arrest LGBTI people whose only 'crime' is to be attracted to someone of the same sex, or identify as a gender other than that assigned at birth? Here at @whereloveisillegal we've come across many stories of persecution and discrimination at the hands of police. Funeka was ignored when she asked for their help after being raped in South Africa, Mimi has been arrested for “cross dressing” in Malaysia and Ishmel was arrested and tortured for being gay in Nigeria. “I'm gay and proud of it. There's nothing that I would change about myself. But my country and my parents would never agree to that.” Shivam is a gay man from India. He fears for his life, should his parents find out. “If do tell my parents about me, especially my dad, he'll kill me. “I told the policeman what happened. He asked me: ‘Are you a woman?’ I told him: ‘Yes I am.’ He didn’t take my statement. Instead he went to other police and I heard him laughing. The other police also came to ask me what had happened. I later found out they were making fun of me. I went home, wearing one shoe, and feeling very devastated. I never believed that the institutions I trusted could do this to me. I arrived at home and went straight to bed without a statement being taken.” Funeka Soldaat is a lesbian woman from South Africa and the head of Free Gender, a black lesbian organization working to end homophobia. “There were 60 people in our town- about 15 of those were kids. On reflection the hardest thing growing up gay was how it made Fletch feel, having an older gay brother, knowing how much he was judged and I think how mad that it may have made him for him to come to terms with his own sense of self.” Kurt & Fletcher are brothers from Australia, both of them are gay. Her attacker was eventually caught, but only after the police were pressured by Free Gender, a black South African lesbian organization fighting to end #homophobia. “I came out to my closest friends when I was 14, and my parents turned out to discover when I was 15, and since that my life has been really hard. My dad accepts me but my mom doesn't. She moved me away from my school and friends, she doesn't let me go alone anywhere, and tells me I'm the shame of the family.” Domi (@Domiregison) is a gay high school student from #Brazil. He says many in his country do not accept gay people. Desite the intolerance, he is happy and proud of who he is: "I love myself and I also love everybody who hates me. I believe that someday they will learn that I'm not worse or better of them just because I'm a boy that likes boys." Domi shared his story with the #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign. Where Love is Illegal uses social media to share stories of survival however social media can be used to intimidate and persecute. In Russia, many homophobic attacks have been filmed on smart phones and posted on social media. Olga was a teacher in Russia. Her boss gave her an ultimatum, stop sharing her support for LGBT rights on social media or leave her job. Darya received numerous, anonymous threats through social media. D&O, also in Russia, were filmed on a smartphone as they were attacked on the street because they were holding hands. #whereloveisillegal exists on this social media platform to interrupt the narrative that says to be LGBTI is somehow abnormal, unnatural, or unholy. “My mother calls me gay when she wants to tell me that i am sick, and then after it she asks if i am ill or if there is something wrong with me, as if her remark on me being gay is not enough emphasis for her that i am -in her opinion- sick and got something wrong going on in me.” Wishing to be known only as The Veiled Truth, this Jordanian gay man has been targeted by family and classmates because of his sexuality. “The Veiled Truth” shared his story with the #WhereLoveIsIllegal campaign.
