Black Lives Matter too.
Let’s talk about race in social media for a second. There is no denying the prejudices and just downright racism that exists in social media. If you’re denying it, well then maybe you should come out of that hole you’ve been living in. This is not okay. Racism, in any form, is not okay. The #blacklivesmatter movement is one that has sparked much controversy since it was started in July of 2013. I just want to take a second to share my perspective on the BLM movement, as a white Christian woman living in the South. Black Lives Matter is not a movement to say that black lives matter more than any other race or that they are the only ones facing persecution, but rather BLM serves to raise awareness and open the eyes of people to see that there are black people being persecuted right before our very eyes and people couldn’t care less. The problem with the All Lives Matter movement is that it minimizes the pain and the problems that the black community faces. Do all lives matter? Yes, absolutely. But it’s not all lives that are facing the same kind of racism and persecution as the black community. Saying “all lives matter!” is basically saying that the pain that the black community is going through right now doesn’t matter. BLM is raising awareness for a particular group of people that have faced a devastating amount of pain and persecution over the years, and to say that their pain is no greater than the pain that any other race feels is offensive and wrong. Yes, all lives matter, but black lives matter too and that is the point that BLM is trying to make.
