Spring storm | I received an invitation like a few others, to design and come up with a fresh new logo that would celebrate and symbolize the senior exhibit show during spring term at the University of Oregon.

I remember going and having my work place there, and it was wonderful being able to walk around and see what my peers were up to.

This is what previous spring storm logos have looked like.

** note the obsession with rain drops ;)

I really like the logo of 2015, it’s actually fairly clean and simple. However I could see the problem being that it’s just way too passive, and hints at none of the creative energy that is behind the spring storm Exhibit. 

When you think Spring storm, there should be more than just rain. What kind of rain? what’s the mood?

I thought of a spring storm as rejuvenating, full of richness and quality of life returning to the earth after a long hard winter. Sappy and Poetic I know ;)

But then I saw this image 

and realize just how much potential kinetic energy looms behind those clouds.

So I start thinking of clouds and lightning and thunder and thinking how perfect this would be to display the awesome raw creative power that seniors are going to be showcasing. And thinking back about it, yeah the exhibit quite overwhelming in some light.

But thunder cloud icons are just quite common so that’s how I figured adding my own little loose whim silly style would have to work to make it stand out.

A WWE perspective series(?)

The general premise of the piece is to bring to attention the culture of hating on a subject when we ourselves don't invest much time into the understanding/exploration of something. Why is there a split in culture when it comes to video games,manga, anime, toys, or shows like WWE? Why do most people dislike WWE, or find something childish when others don’t? Isn’t that kind of interesting? This is to challenge that and demonstrate/illustrate that sometimes you have to go beyond the image, no matter how crazy it seems to get the whole context, there's more than meets the eye.

the premise of using the toy and shooting obscene/crazy/ridiculous shots that serve or don't serve any narrative purposes (depends on the viewer who will piece the stories and pictures together) should already be challenging content to get through.

Playing around with images. I walked out and around and took random shots, some didn’t work:

what was interesting to me at this point was less about the location of where it was shot, and more about the interaction between the two, and just how much more absurd an idea it would become when taken in context of where it was. Rather than letting the shot be dictated by the location, it now would take a back seat to the characters starring in the middle.  

SO! How did I determine what to shoot and how I shoot? that question is something you should ask my brain. I really just muse over a specific spot for a little bit and keep an eye out on any attentions that stick out. I plan my figures around in the scene mentally and roughly manipulate them in the space till something feels right. Usually I just try something and it mostly works!!! Well not alaways....it’s like at least 3-4 shots per one perfect one. 

These figures kinda sucked in terms of terrible articulation in the legs, they couldn’t sit down probably or kneel like squat!! So this design limitation/flaw made my work a little bit more challenging (but I like to say it was more interesting ;)

Flash forward (refer to my process and break down link) and you get to photo editing. We gotta make some of these pics a bit more flashier and pop pop yeah?

Cover - Freelance work for a client.

The premise of the book is very intriguing, I mean you got this neat mix of teen drama with some mystery murder hungry elements and yet the charm of music too. You should all check out Dan’s book! I’ve only read a few chapters but it has me hooked.

The process of putting this together was a journey, not a hard one but very difficult in terms of knitting together a coherent design piece. The design or rather the art direction we wanted to go into was more of a very typical hyper realistic fantasy illustration, that you see on most books; you know the one with the pretty naked blonde girl with a napkin for clothes, a spiraling mountain and some dragon looming over with the hero protagonist down below looking up. 

Dan was set on using a friend as reference photo, so it was a matter of just nailing down the right expression, and from there transferring the face and transforming it into something graphic and poppy, yet not too realistic.

Elwood - Screen printing project summer of 015

For some reason because I didn’t have access to Netflix, I suddenly had to resort back to YouTube for my source of entertainment see? I didn’t want video vlogs and lets play to take my time up however (that’s for another time), I wanted something episodic; I’ve already exhausted Rick and Morty, Adventure time and Bob’s burgers. So I figure why not hit up an old classic?

I was a large fan of Arthur back in good o’l elementary grade school. It was the reason I wanted to rush back home from school most days. The cast of characters all unique and very lovable/memorable in their own special way.

After watching a few shows I figure why the heck should I not make a t-shirt dedicated to this show? So I did!!!

Now why the accurate representations of the characters, instead of the cartoon figures? I figure it’d a much more interesting set up, something that is bizzare. It’s only the true fans of the show, and those still with a inkling left of their childhood will actually get this reference right off the bat. Hence I decide to use the splashes of pink and yellow as the identifier color in relation to the signature color that each character wore.

I choose Arthur and Buster, because well they were the star of the show, it was mainly about Arthur, and who was his wing man?

Lastly the 96 is in a nod to the year the show came out, 1996. Ah haha hard to beleive that this show came out four years after I was born, i’m glad the party didn’t start without me you know?!

Overall I wanted this piece to come off as a distant memory, looking onward in life yet also remembering our roots. What was nice about screen printing, is that the dot matrix...er or rather the half-tone texture already helps with that. It’s solid and visible, yet it’s quite not. The tiny spacing between the colors helps bring a breath of light airiness that was in the end very appropriate for the tone I wanted to go for.

An expansion/Continuation of my original copper plate etched design from printmaking. 2015

If you recall, my earlier piece (unless I didn’t mention/include it on here). The original design was set etched on copper plating for a print making class. The original design back then was only a fraction of the size it is now, with characters and designs flourishing all around the figure in center. 

The whole flow of the design was very much improvised, one character or shape would blossom right off the other, and you get a sense in the way the leaves and limbs are like as one winds from one to the other.

The piece is themed about Beautiful and Grotesque, how can two things of exact opposite natures exist? Or rather, how would that look like? So naturally it took some thinking, and I came up with the conclusion that sharing- giving and receiving is one of the more basic examples of how this relationship can be possible

Is it not beautiful that the figure in the center is giving her light/her self away for the others that swarm her? how beautiful the whole composition is, yet how ugly and grotesque the reality is, when you consider that they steal and take for themselves, yet never give back in return or consider for the others.
