Ours pt. 1
"Imagine Person A of your OTP being bullied at school and Person B saving them from the bullies and they both end up being best friends."
"What the fuck are you, anyway? Goth? Emo? Or are you just a dyke?"Â
Marie stopped in her tracks as the cruel words hit her ears. What was that? Normally passing period was pretty uneventful; after all, it was just five minutes between classes, which wasn't a lot of time considering there was quite a bit of ground to cover between classrooms. She was currently on her way to English from Biology, and there was this rarely used hallway  that she was used to passing every day. Usually it was clear of anyone, but today it looked like it was being occupied.
Pausing at the opening, Marie peeked around the corner, taking in the scene with a frown. It was two against one, a couple of guys crowding a girl up against the wall. Ugly sneers were on their faces as they pressed in, forcing the girl to cringe back. It was clear from the way that the girl was clinging onto her books that she was in distress. Marie looked around, frowning as she noticed people just passing by. Shouldn't somebody stop to help?
"I asked you a question, dyke," one of the guys hissed, pushing the girl hard against the wall. Marie clenched her books in a white knuckled grip as she glared at the boys. Just because the girl was dressed in all black with dark make up on didn't mean they had a right to pick on her. So she was different. What of it? She took a deep breath, not sure what to do.Â
Marie wasn't really the kind of person to step up and speak out. Coming from a pretty sheltered back ground, Marie was a shy girl who rarely even spoke up in class. Watching this girl get bullied, though, was simply unacceptable. Taking a deep breath, she rounded the corner, trying to stand her ground.
"Hey! Leave her alone," she said, glowering at the two boys as she hugged her books to her chest. She felt all three of their eyes snapping in her direction and she instantly felt like hiding under a rock. Instead, she held her head high and tried to keep her legs from shaking.Â
The lead bully smirked at her, walking over and leaning in until she could smell the stink of his breath fanning over her face. "Yeah? Whatcha gonna do, princess? Tell a teach?" he laughed, the sound making her skin crawl. Marie could feel the other girl staring at her, and she knew she couldn't let her down.Â
"Yes. I'll take it to the principal if you don't leave," she threatened, trying not to quail as his glare turned deadly. Her eyes slid towards the girl, feeling her blood boil as she saw the other boy holding her against the wall so she couldn't escape. No, she couldn't back down now. "Leave now, or I swear I'll get you suspended."
At first, the boy in her face looked like he was very tempted to slap her. Still, she stared him down, pushing down her nerves and facing him with calm eyes. He scowled and pushed her back, turning to grab his friend by the arm. "Come on, Kev. We've got better things to do," he growled, dragging his friend behind him as they stalked away.Â
Marie had barely even noticed the bell ringing as she looked at the other girl, letting out a deep breath. Through the entire encounter, the girl had stayed silent and was now just watching her as if unsure how to react. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Marie walked up to her and extended her hand.
"Hi. I'm Marie," she introduced, offering the other girl a kind smile. It took a few moments of nervous silence before the other girl reached out, taking her hand and shaking it timidly.
"I'm Lee," the girl replied, shyly smiling at her savior.Â
Marie beamed. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Lee. You okay? Those boys were being pretty mean."
"Yeah, I-I'm fine," Lee replied, her hair falling in her eyes, "I... Thanks. Ya didn't need to do that."
"Yes, I did," Marie retorted, shaking her head, "They were being jerks. You didn't deserve it. How long has this been going on, anyway?"
Lee bit her lip, looking away. Marie instantly knew something was up. "... A while now. I'm used ta it," Lee replied with a shrug.Â
Marie frowned deeply at that, her hand reaching out to settle on the girl's shoulder despite the responding flinch at the contact. "You shouldn't have to be used to it. You've done nothing wrong," Marie argued, growing pensive. Lee looked at her with confused eyes, keeping mostly to herself as the younger girl thought things over.
"Look, it doesn't look like we're going to get to class any time soon, so how about we go somewhere and just relax for a bit? If you wouldn't mind... well, I'd like to learn more about you. Plus, I don't want you to be alone if those boys come back," Marie said bluntly, peering at Lee with a shy smile.Â
Lee looked at her like she was insane but hesitantly gave in, following the younger girl out towards one of the alcoves that the security guards rarely checked in on. They sat down together side by side, legs crossed. At first, there was nothing but silence. It took a while, but finally Marie broke the silence, gently encouraging Lee to reply until they were having a full fledged conversation.Â
By the time the bell rang for their next class, the two were heatedly debating the merits between rock and metal, leaning in slightly so they could talk without being discovered by the biking guards. They jumped apart at the incessant ringing, smiling sheepishly at each other as students began to pass them in the hall.
"So...maybe we can spend lunch together?" Marie suggested, smiling at the junior serenely. Lee nodded her head, a bit of the shyness having ebbed away in the course of the conversation.Â
"Yeah. Yeah, I-I'd like that," Lee replied, smiling sincerely at the other girl as she reluctantly got to her feet. Marie followed suit, smoothing her skirt back down as she looked up at Lee.
"Meet you here, then?"Â
"Yeah. I'll meet you here."
With that they went their separate ways, heading off to their classes on opposite sides of campus. Marie couldn't help the secret smile she carried for the rest of the day, even after lunch was over.Â
This looked like the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
