𐚁 MASTERLIST / PREVIOUS PART / NEXT PART.
A white misty breath escapes from your lips, cleaving the overbearing darkness that surrounds you. As you silently observe the phenomenon, you know something is off.
Very off.
September is feebly ending, so why is tonight so freezing ? As if the weather tries to warn you. Warn you of something perhaps as cold as death itself coming soon.
You shake your heard, forcing the idea out. “Stay sane Y/N, stay sane” you mutter at yourself.
Since yesterday, your intuition has been hounding you, first, oppressing your chest sharply, and now, gripping your stomach to the point it scorches.
After last month's victory against the diplomats, you already guessed this Sunday would be tough and brutal, and that prowling uncertainty causes you to feel very on edge tonight.
To be honest, you might be showing signs of paranoia—or not. Living in the Bane Zone taught you a common situation can easily escalate in the most unpredictable, horrific way. You now know full well that you can never be too careful if you don't want to watch more people dear to you disappear.
And if nothing happens tonight, confirming your instability, then so be it; you can live with it.
Just like every night, you deftly lie and crawl on the flat hostel’s roof, quietly reaching the edges of each side. Vintage binoculars in hand, you methodically monitor the entire area.
As the oldest and most experienced member of your group, you're now responsible for keeping a close eye on and protecting the hunters' hideout, making you the unspoken leader. So even though the odd coldness painfully grazes your skin, you grit your teeth and embrace the devil: everything is to survive another day.
You already spotted a few bane vampires in the East and sighed with annoyance. However, you can't be bothered with them tonight, as you unfortunately expect a bigger threat to come.
You desperately wish to be wrong, but with how late the diplomats are today, your gut feeling laughs maniacally at you; these vampires are usually so punctual, so perfectly punctual, so once again something is off.
One more thing to drive you mad.
After what seems like endless hours, midnight long past, you hear the sound of engines and your whole body tenses up: the diplomats are finally here.
But as you track the movement of cars with the binoculars... You see it. After the anticipated diplomats’ trucks, follows a long fancy black car, which you’ve never seen before. At least, in this barren area.
The car body shines, like it’s meticulously pampered, making you uncomfortable. Such a grand car looks painfully out of place in the forsaken Bane Zone, even among the other vampires’ trucks—like they belong to different categories.
Alarmed, your breathing slows down, becoming barely audible; only the beating thing in your chest shoddily resonates against your eardrum.
You first watch the vampires climbing out of the trucks, unexpectedly dressed in black military uniforms—the diplomats’ boring suits simply gone. One of them rushes to open the door of the luxurious car, haste being read in his moves, as if he must not make the person inside wait too long.
And then, a silhouette appears, instinctively making you gulp.
A man. Tall and imposing, also wearing a uniform, but his… is diametrically elaborate: buttons and chain ornaments spun of gold—real gold. The coat is bespoke, grim, and perfectly fitting around his waist. Black boots, unveiling long legs. The look completed by a colonel hat projecting a shadow over his face.
But his features… Too hard to miss, even through old binoculars.
His jawline and cheekbones look sharp and well defined. His nose is high, perfectly shaped. His skin… flawless, almost glowing, with the pallor specific to his species. And his eyes ; so dark and piercing—sending shivers down your back. And you don't know if those are shivers of fear or… of something else.
From his expensive attire, to his unshaken posture, to his deadly aura… The lord of the night has come.
You mentally sigh, wishing you could slap your rosy cheeks right now. Like, you loathe yourself so much because you obviously find this odious vampire… attractive.
You haven't seen such a fine man for long, and you can tell. The way your foolish brain describes him? Unbelievable. Acting as if you aren't aware that this man isn't actually your age, that his youthful appearance isn't a damn lie.
The last time you had such a gruesome thought was years ago, about that one puppy-like vampire on TV, the exact one your missing best friend foolishly adored. You had silently judged her, of course, but nevertheless you had functional eyes.
After that, the Bloody War made such thinking impossible, though. How could you find any of these monsters desirable, the exact ones who murdered all your beloved, yet? It's happening right now and you feel like going crazy. Stupid hormones.
But then you remind yourself that what you experience is probably normal. Or almost. You recall reading before that some vampires, particularly powerful ones, are designed to be attractive and enticing. On purpose. While some are definitely visually gifted since birth, like the one below, they indeed possess the devious ability to lure their prey to them.
And a fact that brings you back to reality. Immediately.
Nonetheless, despite how hot—or whatever—that man looks, you know now where that heavy pressure on your stomach, intensifying the more you study him, comes from.
That cold-blooded confidence, the way the other vampires respect him, obey him. That oppressive energy, that imposing wealth, that attractive force. Even that deceptive youth, because something about him screams… ancient, aged like a fine wine.
Your hunting instincts are on high alert. The word is on your lips, but you refuse to say it. Because if it's true, if it's really the case, you're fucking done. Everyone here is fucking done. Yet, your trembling hands betray you first. So you whisper it to yourself, afraid to even say it in your head.
That man is a Velite.
The only thing you want to do right now is run. You want to run away and warn the other hunters in the building to come with you. However, you know that you must make no movement, no noise, absolutely nothing. You can't allow them to detect you, to locate the hideout.
But what to do then? They're already too close for everyone's safety. And because of the human's smell, the Velite and his men will eventually walk there and find where the group hides: vampires and their sharp canine sense of smell.
Escaping the diplomats while fighting the Banes is already difficult enough, so an elite vampire and his trained effective… You want to scream so badly. It's over.
It's over, but you will fight until the last second. You will never willingly surrender. Never.
Still fuck, fuck, and fuck. Why would they even come here and make so much effort to get y'all. Was last month's defeat really too much for their ego ? It makes no sense, no fucking sense.
But then you're human, you really can't tell what goes on in a vampire's brain.
Quick, quick, quick. you try to think of a plan. Anything. Like anything to inform the others that a Velite is in the vicinity and encourage them to flee now, even if it means staying on the roof and woefully sacrificing yourself.
But your stream of thoughts abruptly stops. Your breathing gets stuck in your throat.
How, just how.
Through your binoculars, his inky eyes deeply meet yours. And his look is so penetrating, you feel like it's digging a hole in your soul.
He shouldn't be able to see you. No vampire did before. This hidey-hole is undiscoverable; you made sure of that. In that moment, you want to be wrong. So wrong. But your heart skips a beat, and you know. You know it's real.
He saw you.
And as if the Velite can read your thoughts, a vicious grin appears on his lips, growing larger and more evil every second, confirming your fear.
Your brain shuts down. Your survival instinct takes over. You drop the binoculars abruptly, leaving them behind as you slam the door of the roof to leave. You rush down the stairs of the old hostel, and the commotion alerts the others straightaway. You're known for your battle-hardened quiet moves; you would never make so much noise if something highly dangerous wasn't happening.
As soon as you meet the group, your sickly skin tone and wild eyes tell them everything they need to know.
“Run, and even if one of us falls, don't turn back; just keep running.” You tell the young hunters, but your voice is nothing but a hoarse, emotionless breath.
No one wastes a second. Everyone grab their weapons, equip themselves and start exiting through the different damaged doors and windows.
It's the first time that happens. Let the devil take the hindmost. For five long years, the group fought together, united. To be forced to leave the unfortunates to their fate is abnormal. And horrible. But everyone understands right away that if you, Y/N, say this out of anyone, it's because there is no other choice to survive today.
As you begin to get away, you can hear the other hunters speeding nearby.
However, soon after, you discern them behind y'all: light, fast, agile pace—vampires. And you feel like swearing. The Velite and his men have already caught up with y'all. These beasts.
In a rush, you grab your pill container and swallow one. While it painfully slides down your throat, you wonder, however, if one drug is enough to lose an elite vampire. Neverthless, you don't have time to think any further, cut short by a heartrending, feminine scream.
Instinctively, you stop in your tracks. You're about to turn back to help, but another hunter shouts at you. “Run, Y/N, run! You told us to not stop even if one of us falls, so keep running!”
You're in a state; panic grips you, paralyzing your legs. But under the power of the hunter's words, you manage to pull yourself together. Your feet start moving again on the scary, dimly lit path straight ahead.
Adrenaline seems to be the last thing propelling you forward. You stopped being emotional long ago, yet you feel your eyes welling up as you pick up speed, you know the situation is hopeless. Cold tears stream down your cheeks before being carried away by the night wind.
This is a nightmare. This is just a nightmare. You will wake up in a few minutes.
Right, right, right.
But the nightmare doesn't stop. In the distance, the sounds of guns and metal clashing together resonate, followed by familiar cries. One after the other.
And you don't want to count.
But you do.
Within one hour, they caught everyone. Eight hunters.
Except you.
And it kills you.
You keep running and hiding. Hiding and running. Never stopping as you can hear the vampires approaching.
You lost track of time long ago. Probably more than two hours now. So you noticed... that they take too long to catch you.
Way too long.
It shouldn't be that hard to catch the last hunter of your group. You might be stronger and faster, but you're still human. The drug only works for a few hours.
So you're quick to realize that someone is probably having fun right now. You're certain that Velite wants to exhaust you. To leave you without the strength to fight back, so you will end up giving in to him. Saving the best for last, or something twisted like that.
Between the suppressed sobs in your chest, you sneer silently. You look crazy, jeering when you're about to cry. Because that damn mighty vampire is unaware of one very important thing about you: you're fucking stubborn. You'd rather die than give up.
Your exhausted body sinks to the ground, and your head collapses against the wall behind. In the middle of this filthy, narrow alley, the only perceptible sound is your humanity: your chest rises and falls as you try to catch your breath, at the same rhythm as the old, flickering lamppost nearby. You raise your chin slightly and manage to catch the black sky above you: hazy, gloomy, without any stars or the moon ; an average night in the Bane Zone on the surface, when it's not the case.
And indeed, the rest period is short-lived. A masculine voice suddenly rises—deep, smoky, and tinged with malice, making you flinch in fear.
“Hey, little huntress. I know you're there.”
You bite your bottom lip as a way to control the emotions overwhelming you. Even though it may be futile, you try to calm down and make your heartbeat as faint and slow as possible. You hate how close the voice is to your hiding place.
“I can smell and hear you... Delectable even from this distance.”
At that sentence, shivers of terror run down your spine. The senses of an elite vampire are too acute. The way he uttered his last words makes you sick. To think that you found him attractive just a few hours earlier… Maddening.
“I already caught all your beloved hunter friends. Don’t you want to save them? Hurry up and show yourself.”
A freak and also a damn bastard. The urge to kill him is so strong at this moment. But you know you won't succeed, and that makes you so fucking angry.
You tell yourself that the only choice at the moment is to attempt to flee from him and his men. Again and again, until the sun rises. So you promptly calculate in your head: the Velite is on your left, so you can clear off by going to the right. You should have enough time to escape since he's obviously in no hurry.
However, just as you faintly stand up, a monstrous sound comes from the dark alley to the right, the exact path you were about to take.
And you know that sound all too well, hearing it every night for the past five years, following you in your restless sleep.
Bane vampire.
The monster bursts out of the darkness with monstruous force, leaving you with no time to grab a weapon before it propels you out of the narrow alley. Your body hits the ground with force and slides backward.
Your lips release a groan of pain; the heavy fall was absorbed by your left arm, and you don't want to imagine the condition it's in.
But years of being molded by such horrific situations cause adrenaline to surge through your veins and the pain to fade away. You finally draw a long dagger from its sheath as the Bane leaps at you again.
Like all Banes, its eyes are entirely black, from sclera to iris. Its skin is crisscrossed with dark veins. The lower part of its face is distorted by the size of its canines, as thick and long as a wild animal's.
The drug still taking effect, you manage to rival the creature's strength. Holding your dagger vertically, you prevent its skeletal figure from collapsing entirely onto you.
But as soon as the silver blade touches its skin, it critically scalds it. Backing off from the agony and too oblivious to get the situation, with an expert move, you directly seize the opportunity to twist the silver blade and plunge it deep into the heart of the horrific vampire.
Drops of its dark blood fall onto your face, and you watch the last vestiges of life then extinguish from the creature's eyes. Dead, it collapses heavily on top of you.
Slightly trembling from the fight, you grunt to push the corpse to the side. Lying on the ground, you breathe in and out to regain your senses.
However, your breath catches in your lungs when you hear slow, loud applause echoing in the alley.
Fuck.
Slowly, you turn your head toward the source of the sound, even though you already know who it is.
“Bravo, what a show!” His tone of voice is a blend of sarcasm and undeniable curiosity. “You took him down in three minutes, impressive.”
You forgot for one moment that he was in this street, waiting for you and tormenting you with his words right here.
The true predator.
And you know it's useless because he's too fast, but you can't help yourself. You can't just watch him approach without doing anything.
You attempt to escape.
But as soon as you stand up, your back slams back down to the ground with a crash. You don't even have time to process what's happening before a large hand already grabs your throat, pinning you with no way to flee.
Strangled by the vampire's hand, you're gasping for air. The only thing you can see distinctly is his enthralling face under his colonel hat—from which you can't miss the thin fiendish smile.
He tortures you and enjoys it. Sicko.
He keeps tightening his grip, tighter and tighter, your vision becoming blurry. And when you're about to be suffocated for good, you finally feel the weight of his hand off your neck. The air forces its way into your lungs and you cough violently, already feeling the purplish trail forming around your neck.
You're panting under him, eyes filled with terror and he seems to like it. Crazy, that man is crazy. To your despair, you were now proven that the strength and speed of a velite are indeed unsettling and impossible to fight.
“It was you on the roof earlier, wasn’t it? I think I like your eyes. Especially when they widen in fear.” He asks while already knowing the answer, one knee on the ground and his arms —as of now, on each side of your head, wholly towering over your body.
Hell, fucking hell. What's his problem. You wish to tell him to fuck off, but the words remain stuck in your mouth because 1) you're frightened, your usual insolence curled up inside 2) your left arm; the adrenaline now gone, the pain resurfaces and tears a muffled groan from you.
The velite watches you wordlessly, as a predator would, clearly entertained. Then, in a weird, delicate way, he takes hold of your arm. The action reignites the pain, and another groan of agony, this time louder, uncontrollably escapes from your lips. It makes him chuckle, but he doesn't stop.
Unapologetically, he tears open the black sleeve and reveals the injury: an ugly multi-colored bruise, probably concealing a broken bone, as well as an oozing wound.
You watch him gaze intently at the blood on your arm, and, instinctively, you try to pull away, fearful of what he might do. But of course you fail miserably; his grip is too strong, making it impossible to break free.
But to your surprise, he turns towards you — your arm still in his grip, as if he wasn't bothered by the blood. So, elite vampires have a certain degree of control over their bloodlust, you note.
“I have some questions to ask. If you respond to me properly, I won't torture you.” But you can discern that he was about to add for now.
And you ponder what to do. Is it better to do as he says, or should you just fight him like a mad dog already? The second option is obviously more tempting, but then you tell yourself that if you want a chance to escape and save your found family, you need to stay as intact as possible.
Ultimately, you decide to nod, without breaking eye contact, in a way of showing that you don't care, that you're not afraid (when you fucking are). Which he notices, making him sneer again.
“Let's start with the basics. What's your name, little huntress?”
You debate few seconds before answering. “My name is X.” Your first instinct is to lie.
There is no hesitation in your words, yet, straightaway, you know that he knows. The vampire lets out a sigh, feigning irritation while visibly being amused. “Starting with a lie, that's too bad.”
As soon as he pronounces these words, he pulls your bloody arm to his nose and begins inhaling it, as if it's the most wonderful perfume. “You smell so good, I wonder how you taste.” And you notice from the vile glint in his pupils that he's dead serious.
Panicking under the weight of his stare, “Y/N, my name is Y/N,” you spew, confessing your real name and making him snigger.
“See, it's not hard to reply correctly. And don't try to lie to me again”, he continues, as he pulls your wounded arm away from his face a little bit, placing his finger on the inside of your wrist, where your pulse is “getting answers by torturing people is a favorite pastime of mine.”
And you can tell he isn't bluffing. This damn freak.
“By the way, my name is Jay. And I know you won't forget it.” Your eyes still locked on each other's, you defy him silently, sensing your impudence slowly returning; despite the fear crawling, you can't help yourself—you hate vampires to the core.
However, you're aware that he's right. After all, you still don't know how will the night end for you, especially now between his hands.
“Anyway, let's get down to business now”, you hear him say, and you really wonder what does he want to know from you.
His eyes begin to slide shamelessly over your body, and you feel the heat rising to your cheeks. What the fuck.
You watch him sneer because of your reactions, and you feel like swearing at him. Luckily, his eyes don't linger too long and stop at the level of your trouser pocket. From there, with his other hand, he dares to put his fingers in your pocket, making you gasp in surprise, to grab your pillbox.
As he waves the small pouch in front of your eyes, he asks, “Tell me, where did you get this?” All trace of amusement immediately disappears from his face, and his gaze gets as icy as winter.
You're surprised, very surprised. You didn't expect him to ask about the drug. And he's serious about this.
So you start to think, piecing together what you now know about him: This Jay seems different from what you've heard about the velites. His military uniform, his henchmen. The way he personally came here to hunt y'all. He also mentioned persecuting others for information. Mhhhh. You assume that he's probably in charge of protecting the High Zone, overseeing the vampires' rule, because otherwise, how would he know about hunters' drugs? He may be investigating them, likely tracking down who's making them and how they're managing to ship them to the Bane Zone.
This train of thought spark warm emotions within you and you notice that it's been a very long time since you last felt that. So, pills might be a threat, then… Could there be more rebels in the High Zone than they say? Is there a network you didn't know existed?
Hope wins you over but when you come round, you see that Jay studies you… like a lab rat.
You swallow hard and hesitate a little. Doesn't he ask the truth from you? It's not as if you actually know something about the pills; it's a veiled secret for you as well. And like, since Sir Jay wants honest answers, then you'll give that to him, no problem.
You smile devilishly inside but shows nothing. “Well,” you start, pretending not to know what to say, “some time ago, these pills got inexplicably sent to our hideout. They came with a message, warning us to only take one pill. We listened and then more pills were sent every month. That's it. I don't know anything else.”
You highlighted the content of the message to prove that you're not lying to him. It should be enough, right?
He first focuses on your heartbeat, then you watch him nodding. You're almost relieved but a bit in disbelief. Was it that easy?
“Is there something else you'd like to say?” His voice sounds nonchalant, and you're a bit confused by this question, because he can't read your thoughts… in theory.
So you reply feebly, “No, nothing like that.”
For a brief moment, silence surrounds you, and it plays havoc with your nerves; you have a bad feeling about this.
Always trust your gut-feel they say. And indeed, Jay abruptly brings your injured arm to his face, and particularly close to his lips, making you skip a beat and panic again.
Guessing his sick intentions, you quickly blurt the words, “Wait, wait, wait, I didn't lie; I really told you everything I know!”
Noticing the panic in your voice and your face contorted with fear, he starts laughing again. “I know you're not lying, but I also can tell you're not entirely sincere, little huntress.” As he says this, his predatory gaze returns. “Since you don't want to tell me everything that's on your mind, I'm starting to get hungry.”
Fuck, you should have been more cautious earlier; Jay isn't a common vampire, even though you're not much expressive, of course the jerk is able to discern your most subtil expressions. Damn it.
However, you realize that it was never fair from the start. The bastard states the rules and also changes them according to his will. You really shouldn't have wasted any time discussing with him; you should've just tried to beat the shit out of him, even if you don't stand a chance.
Before he does anything, you attempt to grab him by the neck to destabilize him and free your injured arm from his tight hold, but he beats you to it; his other hand swiftly returns to your throat, choking you once more against the ground.
“Do not bother me when I taste you.” He throws that out in a feignedly angry tone, a sly smile plastered on his face.
As if. You struggle, digging your nails deep into the arm that's squeezing your throat, but it's no use; it doesn't even make him flinch.
And sinisterly, you feel his tongue trace its way up your skin, licking the blood that has flowed. As he does so, his dark eyes never leave yours. The starter.
Stifled cries escape your lips, the sensation is grisly; your heart pounds, and you feel shivers of terror coursing through your entire body. You feel like crying when you hear the groan of satisfaction in his throat while he tastes the crimson fluid. “So fucking sweet.”
Then you understand from his gaze, shining with hunger, what's coming next: the bite, the main course. You struggle even more fiercely, swinging your legs to make him move, but in vain; one of his knees then presses painfully against your stomach, holding you in place, the blow taking your breath away.
You're suffocating but you refuse, you fucking refuse. You miraculously managed to escape a vampire's bite for five long years; you have to stop him, somehow; the last threads of your sanity depend on this to keep from breaking.
Even so, you're completely immobilized, trapped beneath his weight; you can only watch the macabre scene helplessly.
When you see him raise his lips, revealing canines as sharp as blades, tears truly well up in your eyes: It's over, it's really over.
You decide to close your eyes, unable to face reality.
However, the bite never seems to arrive. When you open your eyes you see Jay's upset face, letting out a curse.
Then you hear it, the familiar sound. Again.
Bane vampire.
Drawn in by your human scent, another Bane leaps at both of you. The impact's force sends you both flying, forcing Jay to release you.
You never thought you'd one day be relieved to see a bane vampire yet. This is your chance.
When you finally get up, you see him hesitant, unsure whether to get rid of Bane first or return back to you, but you don't give him an option. You use the opportunity to dropkick Jay fucking hard in the jaw, propelling him into the bane vampire and also letting off some steam.
Without waiting, you start sprinting away from the two vampires' confrontation. However, you hear shortly after a ripping sound. A quick glance behind you reveals Jay's arm in the bane vampire's chest, the bloody heart in his hand.
Monster.
Horrified, you start running away even faster, especially when you hear the sound of the corpse hitting the ground. You know you're next.
“Y/N, where are you going?” echoes diabolically behind you.
Far from you. Your injured arm is slowing you down, but it doesn't matter, you're not going to give up now.
And you swear that the heavens are on your side; the sky begins to brighten and the sunrise gently threatens to appear behind the ruined structures.
You can do it Y/N, you can do it, you scream at yourself.
It's at that moment that you notice the path ends. Except the path isn't actually a path but a destroyed bridge, beneath which flows a river.
Perhaps the fall will be fatal, so you can only ask yourself one last thing: would you rather end your days here or watch your body being drained of its blood until the last drop?
As you hear footsteps approach at high speed behind you, the decision is made in an instant: you jump.
Yet, you feel a force holding you back; Jay caught you by your moon-shaped necklace.
At the last second, you lost and you can't believe it, feeling the chain tighten around your throat.
Nonetheless, the strangulation stops abruptly, replaced by Jay's lovely groan of pain. Burning his hand, he violently yanks the silver chain, and tears it from your neck without meaning to.
Your body sways again.
As you finally fall into the void, cradled by the first rays of sunlight, Jay's voice echoes, "I'll be waiting for you in the High Zone, little huntress."
Your body brutally slams into the river and darkness doesn't wait to take over your consciousness...
