something iâve been thinking about for a long time regarding two of the political conflicts/wars majorly known in the united states â ukraine and palestine:
as a russian person myself, when i found out the news about the invasion, i was, of course, devastated. itâs something weâd seen coming and feared for years. (thatâs obviously not to say we were nearly as devastated as the people who have had their livelihoods and loved ones and cities bombed to the ground).
i was glad to see awareness being raised about it online. i was glad people cared. but what i saw began to disappoint me as time went on: flags in bios became just another decoration. the ârepost or elseâ posts on tiktok stopped being for awareness and became just another trend. it all became so clearly performative.
but then israel/palestine became the biggest news, the most recent trend, and people stopped giving a shit so abruptly. people continue to lose their homes and lives in BOTH conflicts, and the âcloutâ around the latter is also fading.
neither issue is fucking fixed. people are STILL DYING. if you call yourself a fucking activist then stick with it even after it stops getting you attention. trend-hop all you want, thatâs your business, but being against genocide isnât a trend.
