From Coast to Coast AM: Today marks the 120th anniversary of the famed Aurora, Texas 'UFO crash' of 1897. Legend has it that not only did a cigar-shaped craft fall from the sky, but that the incident took the life of a tiny 'space traveler,' who local residents subsequently buried in the Aurora cemetery. The alleged site of the alien's final resting place had been marked by this unique 'flying saucer' headstone until a few years ago when some ne'er-do-wells stole the remarkable rock. Coast Insiders can learn more about this remarkable case by checking out the 3/28/2016 edition of C2C. http://www.coasttocoastam.com/show/2016/03/28

More than SIXTY corpses burned in mass Hindu cremation to share expense of elaborate ceremony
A mass cremation was held today in the Balinese town of Ubud in which more than 60 corpses were burned.
The ceremony, well known as Ngaben, was shared by mourners who could not afford to perform the ritual by themselves.
Ngaben, which means ‘turn to ash’, is considered to be the last and most important rite in the cycle of a Balinese Hindu life.

Illyrian Type Bronze Helmets with Gold Funerary Masks
These were discovered at the cemetery site of Archontiko in Pella, Greece. Pella was the ancient capital of Macedonia. The helmets and masks date to after 530 BC. These were probably only used as grave goods for a warrior’s burial and not for protection during battle.
My vintage medical/funeral/embalming collection. I’ve bought and sold a few pieces since this photo was taken, but it’s still a fun one to show off.
An embalming syringe kit from late 1700s / early 1800s England. Used to inject zinc chloride and arsenic into the arteries of the dead to slow down the decomposition.

Anna Maria von Stockhausen
Her corpse was cross-strapped due to people fearing that she would return from the dead. In the middle ages, there was a general fear of people coming back from the dead.

The Capela dos Ossos Bone Chapel is an ossuary located in Faro, Portugal. The chapel is built entirely from the human bones of more than 1000 monks. As well as the walls being covered in human skeletons and skulls, there is a single complete skeleton covered in gold which hangs from the front of the chapel. An inscription above the entrance translates to:
“Stop here and consider, that you will reach this state too.”
The skull of a young girl who was buried wearing a ceramic wreath - 300-400BC. This skull currently resides in The New Archaeological Museum of Patras in Greece.
