E.B. White is one of my favorite essayists. He is probably best known to most as the author of Charlotte’s Web, the famous children’s book. But he also wrote some of my favorite essays. He is a master of writing small...that is making something lovely and meaningful out of something that doesn’t have any overt conflict. He holds balance between observational genius and subtle irreverence. He is a thinking writer’s essayist and for those who are studying the craft of the essay, I recommend reading E.B. Writer highlight: Dan Poynter was a writer who started off as a parachute design specialist. After looking for books on a new special interest -- hang gliding, Dan realized there weren’t any.....so he wrote the first book on the subject.
