ANTIBIOTICS CHEAT SHEET :)
Also, REMEMBER!!!!
* Sulfonamides compete for albumin with:
Bilirrubin: given in 2°,3°T, high risk or indirect hyperBb and kernicterus in premies
Warfarin: increases toxicity: bleeding
* Beta-lactamase (penicinillase) Suceptible:
Natural Penicillins (G, V, F, K)
Aminopenicillins (Amoxicillin, Ampicillin)
Antipseudomonal Penicillins (Ticarcillin, Piperacillin)
* Beta-lactamase (penicinillase) Resistant:
Oxacillin, Nafcillin, Dicloxacillin
3°G, 4°G Cephalosporins
Carbapenems
Monobactams
Beta-lactamase inhibitors
* Penicillins enhanced with:
Clavulanic acid & Sulbactam (both are suicide inhibitors, they inhibit beta-lactamase)
Aminoglycosides (against enterococcus and psedomonas)
* Aminoglycosides enhanced with Aztreonam
* Penicillins: renal clearance EXCEPT Oxacillin & Nafcillin (bile)
* Cephalosporines: renal clearance EXCEPT Cefoperazone & Cefrtriaxone (bile)
* Both inhibited by Probenecid during tubular secretion.
* 2°G Cephalosporines: none cross BBB except Cefuroxime
* 3°G Cephalosporines: all cross BBB except Cefoperazone bc is highly highly lipid soluble, so is protein bound in plasma, therefore it doesn’t cross BBB.
* Cephalosporines are "LAME“ bc they do not cover this organisms
L isteria monocytogenes
A typicals (Mycoplasma, Chlamydia)
M RSA (except Ceftaroline, 5°G)
E nterococci
* Disulfiram-like effect: Cefotetan & Cefoperazone (mnemonic)
* Cefoperanzone: all the exceptions!!!
All 3°G cephalosporins cross the BBB except Cefoperazone.
All cephalosporins are renal cleared, except Cefoperazone.
Disulfiram-like effect
* Against Pseudomonas:
3°G Cef taz idime (taz taz taz taz)
4°G Cefepime, Cefpirome (not available in the USA)
Antipseudomonal penicillins
Aminoglycosides (synergy with beta-lactams)
Aztreonam (pseudomonal sepsis)
* Covers MRSA: Ceftaroline (rhymes w/ Caroline, Caroline the 5°G Ceph), Vancomycin, Daptomycin, Linezolid, Tigecycline.
* Covers VRSA: Linezolid, Dalfopristin/Quinupristin
* Aminoglycosides: decrease release of ACh in synapse and act as a Neuromuscular blocker, this is why it enhances effects of muscle relaxants.
* DEMECLOCYCLINE: tetracycline that’s not used as an AB, it is used as tx of SIADH to cause Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus (inhibits the V2 receptor in collecting ducts)
* Phototoxicity: Q ue S T ion?
Q uinolones
Sulfonamides
T etracyclines
* p450 inhibitors: Cloramphenicol, Macrolides (except Azithromycin), Sulfonamides

How to GET SHIT DONE
Because it comes up a lot for all of us trying to manage schedules that slam more than 24 hours of work into a day, I thought I would make one giant productivity post for everyone to help us all out (including myself).
10 steps to GET MORE SHIT DONE in a day
JUST START—I think most of us find that sometimes the hardest part to starting a task is overcoming the “ugh—fuck this shit, I don’t want to do this” feeling. So, trick yourself into it. Instead of saying you’re going to work for 8 hours, tell yourself you’ll do an hour… and watch that hour turn into 2 or 3 or 4 magically.
Action fights anxiety—If you’re terrified of a project hanging over your head, just start it!! Instead of waiting till tomorrow or next week when things might be right, just start right now! Do something to help yourself feel better about it. You’ll feel better getting through the rest of your day if you don’t have the fear. If you wake up at 2 am panicked you haven’t replied to an email, get up and do it now so you can go back to sleep in peace!
Make a list—Never underestimate the power of writing it down and crossing it off.
Take care of yourself—It’s hard to work when you’re tired or hungry or haven’t worked out, etc. So, prioritize—make yourself #1! You’re fucking worth it. So work out, eat breakfast, sleep 6 or 8 or 9 hours (whatever you need). Do whatever it takes to make yourself feel ready to take on the day.
Stay organized—I have a slightly OCD-type personality. If the desk is a mess, it’s hard for me to do my work. So put things back where they belong, take the time to keep things tidy so you can do your best work.
Don’t multitask—We all think we’re good at this—but the truth is we’re shit. We’re complete and utter shit at multitasking. Do one thing very well instead of four things poorly.
Shut off—Turning away from the work for just a minute can really decrease your productivity. Unless you are actively waiting on a text to hear the test results from your mother’s biopsy or an emergency call from your best friend that your house is burning down almost anything else can wait another hour until you finish your task. Even an email from your boss can probably wait another 10 minutes for you to finish what you’re working on.
Be competitive—Be a better you than you were yesterday. Do more. Show yesterday-you that they’re a lazy bitch and you can do better!
Refocus—here’s a list of how to do it in 3 minutes or less.
Give a fuck!!—If you actually care about what you’re doing, you’ll be more motivated to do it!
10 very specific ways to get more shit done
Work when you work best—This rule that people work better in the morning is bullshit. Some people work best from 5 am to 7 am, but some of us do our best work from 1 pm to 3 pm or 10 pm to midnight. Work when you do your best work and get things done—whenever that is!!
Localize—Put it all in one place. Stop moving between eight study resources or you’ll fail to focus on one thing well—instead condense all your study materials into one place and then focus on that ONE thing.
Multi-task on the stuff that doesn’t matter—It takes no brain power to clean a counter, so when you have to clean your apartment you can also return the phone calls you’ve put off. When you have to stand in line for coffee you can also answer emails, while your lunch is heating in the microwave you can put away the dishes in the dish washer. Get more done in the spaces between.
Be contrary—Who says you have to buy groceries on the busiest shopping day? Go at a weird time when other people won’t be there and you can get in and out faster. Don’t waste your time waiting in line just because that’s when everyone else does something. Do things when you can do it fastest!! Hit the post office at 3 pm when everyone else is at work, go to the gym late in the evening after the post-work rush is over. Do it when you can get it done fast!
Buy the right shit—Go ahead and buy the best tool for the task. If you don’t set yourself up right, you’ll just spend more time fighting for things to work than actually working!!
In arm’s reach or screw it—When you sit down to work, get all the things you need ready to go so you don’t have to keep getting up for more paper or some water. If it’s not within arm’s reach, move it or screw it!
Bribe yourself—Never underestimate the power of a piece of chocolate, or a night out at the end of the week, or an online shopping spree for that shirt you’ve wanted.
Turn it up (or turn it down)—If you hate the quiet play music, but if the sound is too distracting shut it the fuck off. Work in a space that works for you.
Deep end—welcome to it--Do the hard stuff first. You’ll lose energy as the day goes on, so leave the easy things for when you’re tired and don’t need as much will power.
One touch—You’ve probably heard this one before, but here’s my irreverent version of it. Pick it up—don’t put it the fuck down until you’re done. If you get an email from your professor saying you all have to complete a required form, do the fucking form now and email it back immediately. Why spend more time later having to look at that damn email again? If you realize you’re out of paper towels, check your level of tin foil and tissues while you’re at it so you can go to the store one time. Do it once, do it right, don’t fuck around.
Oh, and don’t forget to give yourself a break when you need it. Not every day can be a day where everything gets done. :)
13 Tips For Efficient Studying!
Make To Do Lists - this can aid you in knowing which tasks for the day are the priority and can give you the visual of accomplishing daily tasks. You can also get the app Momentum which enables you to add a desktop to-do list! :]
Have A Study Buddy - get a studying companion who you know will help motivate you to continue studying, and it will also incorporate your social life in one as well! Especially if you go out for a coffee and go studying!
Drink And Eat While Studying - drinking plenty of water and eating healthy snacks such as fruit can help keep you energized and maintain focus while studying, as well as keeping your mind and body healthy and hydrated!
Discuss Problems With Your Tutor - if you’re having an issue with a module of work or a project, don’t be afraid to ask your tutors for help! After all, it’s their job to help their students with any queries and problems they are experiencing. If you are worried about asking them in person, you can always email them! I used to when I first started college and now I have enough confidence to ask my tutors face to face.
Do As Much As You Can When Motivated - There is no point trying to plan further ahead if you don’t know when you’re next going to be super stressed out or too tired to move. So I like to spend a few moments studying after college every other day and stay motivated on my day off to catch up and be ahead of other people in my class by doing work in my own time. It is a great way to manage your own time and pick up a better pace. I also do less or next to no studying on the weekend, as I reserve that for work and social activities with friends and family.
Spend As Much Time In Study Areas At College As Possible - with no distraction from luxuries such as mobile phones and laptops, you are able to work efficiently in an educational environment, which allows you to stay motivated and focussed when studying.
Keep A Planner Or Calendar - no one can be organised without either of these! I have both and they help a lot with keeping track on important events and deadlines. I use a calendar for home and a planner for when I’m on the go. I got my calendar and organiser from The Works and Paperchase repspectively.
Get Enough Sleep! - how can you focus on studying and completing deadlines if you don’t have enough energy to do them! Ensure you get a routiine together for the week and ensure you get a least 7-8 hours sleep.
No Caffeine After 5pm - unless you want to have a sugar high and get nothing accomplished, then don’t consume caffeine! Caffeine causes you to stay awake for longer so drinking caffeine after this time can cause your body to keep itself up till early hours, which you don’t want, especially if you have an exam the next day! So try to avoid caffeine and drink water instead.
Stop Studying After 9pm - you don’t want to tire yourself out, especially your brain! After 9pm stop studying so you can chill out for about an hour before going to bed at a reasonable time.
Take A Bath Or Shower To Destress! - after a long day of hard work, you want to wind down and the best way to do that is to take a bath or shower. This helps relax your muscles and gives you some time to your self to wind down for the evening.
Don’t Overwork Yourself! - if you get too tired of studying then take a break. After all, you and your brain need to relax every once in a while and overworking yourself can cause you to get distracted and take your concentration away from studying.
Don’t Be Afraid Of Extensions! - if you want extra work to do on a project that would pick you up a few extra marks on coursework then ask! Just don’t ask if you’re drowning in work already. Only ask if you have free time and are free from other work and projects.
So that is my 13 Tips For Efficient Studying! I hope this helps all of you out and if you have any questions I will be more than happy to answer them!
This morning I made a new moodboard for autumn, and now it and my whole workspace motivate me to study 💕

10 Things I Learned in Med School That I Didn’t Know Until I Got There
Happy New Years!
As a second year medical student I will say that I am very qualified to share my wisdom, considering I still barely know anything at all. It’s time to share some things I learned before 2016 takes my soul!
Every time I talk to a pre-med; “I would love to be where you are.” And while I love where I am, it’s not all rainbow and people showering your with “yay you made it” flowers. There’s a lot I feel like even among the medblr community we don’t touch on too often because it can take a while to see them in all the action. I think they’re important though.
Remember, these are from personal experience! I learned a lot in the the last year and half but you might have different experiences and that’s just fine! Just take it so you know!
1. It’s a small world
When was the last time you got the spend all your time among 150 people, give or take a few? And you cannot escape them. You’re stuck. That’s what you have to survive in med school. You know that. But the world of medicine is so much smaller than that. Hospitals are even smaller than that. Rotations are usually in a small region. People know people. People love to talk. We live in an itty bitty medical world. Things will always follow you, good or bad. So make your big mark on this bitty world a good one.
2. All class environments are different
Many schools do have an expected class style, and there’s a good chance your will follow suit. I personally think it’s an important thing to look into. But your class style depends on your classmates. It doesn’t matter if you’re in the land of southern hospitality, hardcore city life or rustic heart and soul. Your class could be anything. They could be your new family or they could be blood and guts cut throat. You won’t know until you show up. But there’s still a good chance no matter what you get, you’ll still find kin.

If you perform a lumbar puncture on a person with increased intracranial pressure, you will herniate the brain, kill the patient, and fail the exam
Master the Boards knows what’s important (via mymedlife)
When I get home from class each afternoon, I’m usually exhausted, hungry, and not in the mood for buckling down and getting work done. But we all know that doing homework and studying right when we get home is way better than saving the work for late at night, or blowing it off all together. This afterschool routine will give you time to rewind from a long day and stay productive.
1. Right when you get home, bring your bag to your study space. Take out your planner and make a detailed list of everything you plan to accomplish in that afternoon and evening that is school-related.
2. In your study space, take out everything you need to accomplish these goals and put it all into one pile. (As you complete tasks, you can refile papers and put things back into your bag.)
3. Change into your comfy “at-home” clothes. It’s much more relaxing to be at home with fresh, soft clothing.
4. Get a snack and a drink. Eat before you start working, and use the time to chill, listen to music, and get pumped for productivity.
5. Go to your study space. All your materials should be laid out for you already, so all you have to do is turn off your phone, find a playlist, and get cracking!
6. Take a timed 5-minute break in between tasks. Use this time to refill your drink, stretch, use the restroom, and check your phone.
7. When it’s time for dinner or another scheduled activity, use that time as a mental break. Don’t rush to get back to work unless you know you’ll be pressed for time.
8. After eating dinner and leaving other commitments, finish up your work and then get ready for bed.
9. Take ten minutes to look over notes for the next day, tidy up, and get everything ready for the morning.
10. Reward yourself for your productivity with Netfilx, pleasure-reading, or whatever else feeds your soul. Then, get a good night’s sleep!
