Kakashi Hatake from Naruto has WON White Hair And Traumatized Bracket!
After a hard-fought final, he finished with 1,622 votes compared to Jonathan Sims' 1,361 votes. Congratulations, Kakashi voters!
The truly staggering amount of support - infodumps, asks, screaming in tags - Kakashi received in the last few rounds makes this result no surprise.
Thanks so much everyone for all the engagement through this bracket, and for coming back even after it went on hiatus for nearly a year after the first round. It's been super fun!
As suggested, there will also be a bonus poll to "confirm" second place between Jonathan Sims and Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist (who lost to Kakashi in his semi-final).

Kakashi won this bracket, but an anon requested this poll for second place! Jonathan made it to the final and lost to Kakashi, and Scar lost to Kakashi in their semi-final.
voting is based on trauma, swag, and favouritism! trauma and propaganda under the cut!
Trauma!
Jon: âThe show's villain's plan DEPENDED on traumatising him. In a way the purpose of the show was to traumatise him. He saw a boy get eaten (and blamed himself) as a child, then as an adult he had worms crawl into his flesh, his hand burned, himself stabbed several times, went into a cursed coffin and thought he wouldn't come out, stared into an evil anti-Sun of darkness, his rib extracted while he was aware, he was blown up, thrown into the void, alienated from his coworkers who considered him a monster, had one of his coworkers replaced by an actual monster that tried to kill him (and blamed himself), another one of his coworkers blew himself up, he was in a coma with freaky supernatural dreams, a cop took him to the woods to paralegally execute him, and after filling in his collectible trauma card he was able to be used by his boss to literally end the world and plunge into terror (for which he also blamed himself).â
[rest of Jon's trauma section has especial TW for mutilation / body horror and specifically eye trauma!]
"Both his parents are dead, he was raised by his grandmother who didnât really care about him, he, at age eight, read a book that caused him to witness someoneâs death, he cannot quit his job without stabbing his eyes out, he was manipulated into starting the apocalypse via trauma, heâs lost two of his ribs, he feeds on peopleâs trauma, he has died, he was in such a deep state of paranoia that he started stalking his coworkers, he was framed for murder and had to go into hiding, he probably cannot use one of his hands due to severe burns, his coworker stabbed her eyes out so she didnât have to work with him, and the only guy who really actually explained shit to him was a ghost."
from @fullyconsumedbywhatlovesme: "JON GOES THROUGH FUCKING HELL (spoilers, some)

LITERALLY UNABLE TO QUIT HIS HORRIBLE JOB THAT CONSTANTLY PUTS HIM IN DANGER, MAKES HIM LOSE HIS FRIENDS, AND FORCES HIM TO SERVE AN ENTITY THAT WANTS TO END THE WORLD

ABANDONED BY FRIENDS
SUFFERS SEVERE PARANOIA
IS FRAMED FOR THE MURDER OF TWO PEOPLE WHICH GETS THE COPS SENT AFTER HIM
HES KIDNAPPED TWICE IN THE SHOW
ONE OF THE TIMES IS FOR A MONTH

HE GETS TWO OF HIS RIBS TORN OUT
HE GOES DOWN INTO AN ETERNAL PLACE OF EARTH AND BEING BURIED ALIVE TO SAVE SOMEONE WHO THREATENED TO KILL HIM IN THE WOODS WITH A KNIFE
Oh I forgot SOMEONE CAUSES HIM TO FEEL LIKE HES FALLING AT TERMINAL VELOCITY AND THEN SOMEONE ELSE SHOOTS THAT PERSON AND (read above) AND FORCES JON TO HELP BURY THAT GUY IN THE WOODS ALL WITHIN THE SPAN OF AN HOUR

People pretty much hated him for it when he woke up and thought he should've died
Gradually losing his humanity

Got his hand burnt in exchange of informatiom, which lead to the falling-at-terminal-velocity thing, which lead to the kidnapping in which he almost dies and that acording to him was the most helpless he ever felt
Got stabbed at least twice, also stabbed his own finger multiple times in order to cut it off, only to find out the wound was healing at a supernatural rate"
Scar: âtldr survived a genocideâ
âsurvivor of a military genocide of his peopleâ
âHis entire culture got attacked in a massive war, he himself got badly wounded and only survived because his older brother sacrificed his own life to safe him and the efforts of two doctors in an emergency clinic. He ended up killing them after he found out about his brother and becasue they belonged to the enemy nation.
This does goes against his religion by the way.â
Awesome thorough trauma summary from @spidermanifested:
âscar (not his real name) was a warrior-priest who grew up in the fictional occupied desert region of ishval at the turn of the 20th century with his parents and older brother. he was a devoutly religious man with a strong moral compass and didnt approve of his brother studying alchemy, which the ishvalan religion forbade.
near the end of the genocide, a state alchemist of the western-european-coded amestrian army bombed and killed the brothers' parents in front of them while they were all preparing to flee their neighborhood. scars arm was caught in the explosion. before he could bleed out, his older brother used alchemy to transplant his own arm in its place, presumably dying himself shortly afterward.
the following only takes place in the manga and the brotherhood anime, and ill touch on the first animes version of events later, but sometime after this is when the amestrian medics (mentioned in the propaganda above) found scar and relocated him. he woke up in a crowded field hospital, and through the blood-loss-concussion-just-woke-up-etc fog he saw his own arm in his periphery, recognized his brothers tattoos, and thought, oh, my brother is here! he must have survived!
so the situation is not "scar realized his brother was dead, got mad and killed the doctors". its "scar realized what hed assumed was his full, alive brother was instead his brothers Disembodied Limb. -> Attached To Him? -> Oh My God What Did They Do To My Brothers Body. What Did They Do To MY Body". and then he had a panic attack and lashed out, like anyone with the strength to do so would have done, because fascists just killed his whole family, he was trapped on a cot in an unfamiliar room surrounded by white strangers and blood, and his first waking realization was that his body had been violated by the exact same process that, again. killed his family
and tbf im sure whoever submitted the propaganda just didnt think about it for very long, because if you ask me the source material doesnt do much better. fma (manga/brotherhood) seems to try to narratively parallel scar killing the doctors, and subsequently (and with a lot more actual intent) a bunch of state alchemists, as revenge for the genocide. with... the genocide in question? or at the very least, the actions of the handful of Sad soldiers who feel Bad about what they did (genocide). as part of a larger thesis about "hate" and "responsibility for past harm" and "cycles of violence". which is already a bad place to start
but then, UNLIKE any of said soldiers, scars arc culminates in being roundly berated by a bunch of the main cast and absorbing it without complaint, to prove hes willing to Atone. and they all STILL proceed to complain and call him a killer the entire time they have to work with him. genuinely the worst part of the show. its not like everyone on screen regularly interacts relatively cordially with roy mustang, the guy with the world record for "most helpless civilians burnt to death", or anything
which leads me to circle back around to the 2003 adaptation: having watched both shows i was blown away by how much more sympathy and understanding scar is granted by those writers. they largely dont shy away from his violence, but one major difference is they dont cast him as having killed the doctors. instead its the aforementioned roy mustang who killed them, and theres a very telling gap in the way fans assign blame and agency depending on the version being discussed. for whatever mysterious reason, scar catches more flack for killing winrys parents with an iv pole in a fit of panic than mustang does for killing them both with a gun on purpose because Orders.
even in the manga/brotherhood, theres so much depth to scar that goes understated. his being forced to inherit his brothers arm and its destructive power, something hes always wanted to reject but can no longer afford to, is really illustrative of how aware hes been made to become of his own capacity for violence, how deliberately he has to decide where and when to use that violence in a world so unthinkingly and unceasingly violent towards him. and fma 03 clearly recognized that exact premise, because as a result you have a show from 23(!!) years ago that dissects and denies the phantasm of the scary brown religious "terrorist". i think we should all strive to clear the same bar when we talk about characters whose lives closely parallel real colonial atrocities, because it definitely reflects how we think and talk about the real thing. scar should sweep this whole poll as well but thats a givenâ
Propaganda!
Jon: âJon was kidnapped three times - one of those times for a MONTH - during which he was forcibly moisturised and gagged. no one cared that he was gone for a month or that he was kidnapped (except Martin). Jon was turning into a monster against his will. the fact heâs a orphan is the least interesting trauma ab him.
also heâs canonically bi ace soooooâ
Scar: âhe's the best <3 my fav serial killerâ
âKills people by just touching and then disassembling them. Has killed multiple state alchemist and has even fought homunculi. He really likes cats.â
It was mentioned before that characters who experienced their own personal torment Nexus are overlooks for characters with broad tragedies, and I feel like that makes it appropriate to rant about Kakashi's 'fate worse than death'
I think one of the most interesting trait of Kakashi's when you consider foreshadowing is that he is actually a character living past his own 'fate worse than death' without us knowing for the longest time! For him, his 'person torment nexus' is killing a friend, we see this in how he reacts to Sasuke and Naruto's fight in the hospital and we see this again in his decision during Kage summit arc
Although he took Naruto to talk to the Raikage because he still believed in his team reuniting one day, this belief is shattered when he learns of Sakura's decision to kill Sasuke herself. This leads him to conclude that it's in team 7's destiny that one of them will kill either one or both of the other two, this is what moves him to finally fight Sasuke himselfâ to bear the burden of killing a friend so his students don't have to. At this point, we've only been told in the tree confrontation that Kakashi hates the idea of Chidori being used against one's own allies, as well as his personal motto being 'to never abandon one's friend's, so the weight of the choice is understood but not the context
Then we learn that Rin died by his hand, though no fault of own but rather her own choice, and it sheds light on WHY he takes this so strongly and why he tried to take the burden off of his student's hands, because he was already corrupt, he already lived though the horror of killing a friend, and he doesn't want them to face the same choice.
And then Obito comes back and he is trying to upend the world as they know, to trap the whole world in a false reality and inevitably kill them in days time, to end all life on earth, and he is once again forced to make the decision. Because he needs to kill Obito, whose words he has lived by for years and whose memory he holds so preciously, to save all of his loved ones. It's heartbreaking, and he can't bring himself to do it until many simulations, because Obito trapped him in a loop where they fought over and over again and where he impaled himself on Kakashi's hand over and over again, we don't know how many times he had to kill Obito but it was more than three times at the least.
Anyways, Kakashi has already lived past what he considers to be the worst thing that can happen to someone, and as such he sees himself as someone unsalvageable and tainted... And he can't even kill himself directly because he has many complexes about the act of suicide (and also because he is a weapon first and a person second)
Both his parents are dead, he was raised by his grandmother who didnât really care about him, he, at age eight, read a book that caused him to witness someoneâs death, he cannot quit his job without stabbing his eyes out, he was manipulated into starting the apocalypse via trauma, heâs lost two of his ribs, he feeds on peopleâs trauma, he has died, he was in such a deep state of paranoia that he started stalking his coworkers, he was framed for murder and had to go into hiding, he probably cannot use one of his hands due to severe burns, his coworker stabbed her eyes out so she didnât have to work with him, and the only guy who really actually explained shit to him was a ghost.

âKakashi's father killed himself while Kakashi was still a kid, and left him alone because his mom was already dead. While dealing with his difficult feelings about it, he ended up on a mission that killed his teammate pretty horrifically. He lost his eye on that mission too, and replaced it with the eye of his teammate. He's literally actually died but the plot wouldn't let him rest and brought him back. He's had to train the son of his deceased mentor and a member of the same clan that his teammate who gave him the eye, which probably didn't feel great. LOL yeah it does seem that way. Actually I find it quite puzzling because Jon hardly gets any people reblogging with propaganda or even really cheering him on in the tags (I think that may have changed now it's the final, but it's always been the case in previous rounds.) You can see Kakashi has an absolute butt ton of propaganda and infodumps about his trauma he's received on reblogged additions to his polls in previous rounds, but Jon literally has nothing except what he was originally submitted with. Everyone just silently votes for him, somehow!

Kakashi: âfather committed suicide when he was a child. he was a child soldier in a brutal war. everyone on his team died, one by one, and each time he had a reason to blame himself. one of them literally killed herself using him as the weapon. did I mention the child soldier thing.â
âso so much its been so long since ive read Naruto but hes pretty up there in traumatic momentsâ
âKakashi's father killed himself while Kakashi was still a kid, and left him alone because his mom was already dead. Kakashi's really been through it and I haven't even finished the show yet, so there's probably more!â

But this âď¸ touches on the very end of the war arc, which I breezed thru bc it's honestly boring I'm sorry đ But the one thing I did totally forget and also isn't mentioned above, so, the red eye he gets "gifted" from his apparently dying buddy.... when they go to war 20+ years later, they rip that thing outta his head all over again. Again bc it's war arc it's ...pretty stupid and Naruto is laughably overpowered and he just holds his hand over his eye socket and just magically creates a new eyeball..... But still. He lost his eye as a child, got gifted a replacement, had it drain his chakra for decades before the guy who gave it to him and his evil boss decide "hey I need that actually" and then they rip it out of his head ....... Mind you, one of Kakashi's monikers is "Kakashi of the Sharingan" bc he made his name for himself mastering its ability to discern jutsu and is now known as Dude Who Can Do Pretty Much Everything.... and now he no longer has that sharingan. Not huge in the grand scheme of his trauma, but having your eye stolen for the sake of killing you with it (bonus points that it's become synonymous with your identity) is kinda harshâ

Scar: âhe's the best <3 my fav serial killerâ
âKills people by just touching and then disassembling them. Has killed multiple state alchemist and has even fought homunculi. He really likes cats.â
Kakashi: âhe's got a neat maskâÂ
âLook at him. He's so cool.â
From @reineyday âoh friend killer kakashi. chuunin at 6, jounin at 12 and anbu at 13 đ
carrying his father's suicide with him as well as his inability to save his mentor or do anything abt the kid they left behind
watched one of his anbu team members who was even younger than him go off the rails and murder his ENTIRE family. except for one (1) kid that kakashi then had to mentor and then THAT kid ALSO went off the rails
nobody's tried and failed harder than u đđâ
We donât know his real name and never will. Names in Ishval are a gift from god and âI am walking down a path of no return, so I will leave behind me every gift I've received from God.â So someone called him Scar and it stuck.
His whole family and most of his people were killed in a genocide. His brother sacrificed himself to save him.
His brotherâs LITERAL ARM is permanently attached to his body, as a permanent reminder of both what the state alchemists took from him, and his brotherâs sacrifice.
He uses the tattoos on said arm to enact revenge on all state alchemists by basically dismantling and exploding their bodies. (This goes against the beliefs of their god/religion)
He accidentally killed two doctors from the enemyâs side who were risking their lives to help his people. (His first reaction after waking up from the attack that killed his family)
This little girl shows up and heals his wound with alchemy. Then starts following him around for some reason? Guess heâs a big brother/dad now idk đ¤ˇââď¸
Goes out to find her lost tiny pet panda while cops are actively looking for him đ
Finds out that this ultimate power (philosopherâs stone) that certain state alchemists used in the war were created using the literal souls of his slaughtered people.
Uses/kinda befriends? The alchemist who created the stones. They help prevent an upcoming doomsday event. (After disfiguring the guys face. Heâs understandably still pissed about all that)
He later meets the daughter of those doctors he killed and is shocked when she decides to help him instead of kill him. She even bandages his wounds because if her parents wanted to help him, then she will too. (God I love Winry đ)
Gets tattoos on the other arm so he can create things, instead of just destroying. Not only is this incredibly useful in the upcoming battle, but is a sign of his personal growth.
Almost dies in a 1v1 with the man who ordered his peoplesâ genocide/the living embodiment of Wrath
Said fight was where he needed to be to dismantle a horrible spell*, saving the lives of literally everyone in the country he was once trying to destroy.
Recovers from the fight and goes on to be an ambassador or whatever between the two countries, to rebuild his own, and to help restructure and hold the other accountable, to make sure they never commit such atrocities again.
*technically not a spell. Alchemy science bullshit that sucked the souls out of everyone in the country
And yeah the constantly calling him a murderer, while hanging out with Murder McGee Mustang isnât a great look for most of the main cast, but it is what it is

Trauma!
Magneto: âAuschwitz survivor (plus various trauma up to actual death and resurrection, but nothing tops that)â
âTW Holocaust: Survived the Auschwitz death camp while his entire family was murdered. He escaped the camp with a fellow prisoner, Magda, and they got married and had a daughter, Anya, but he lost his family again when Anya died in a fire and Magda fled, fearing his newly awakened mutant power.â
Propaganda!
Magneto: âMagneto is a bad guy with idealistic thoughts and honestly solid reasoning, he only wants to protect mutants even when he's getting violent about it. Plus, he's style incarnate, in the melodramatic way, with his capes and his monologues. Also he's hot.â

Reason for amnesia: Supernatural Nightvale shenanigans
Do they get their memory back?: N
âFunâ facts:Â - the worst fashion disaster you can imagine (every time he describes his outfit it is the most bizarre outlandish things possible) - doesn't believe mountains exist - scared of mirrors - Is 100+ (If time works)
SIFFRIN
Reason for amnesia: magical memory erasure / their home island was erased from the whole world's memory when they were on a boat just outside the affected area. his family, history, culture, language, everything is gone and is still actively being redacted/erased years later / All memory of their country and anything associated with it was wiped from everyone's memory. For most the cast, it's just a conversational tidbit. "How weird that no one can remember what that country was called." For Siffrin, who had borrowed his parents' boat in a running-away-from-home prank at the time the incident happened, lost everything. / Their home island (and any memory of it) dissappeared due to wish craft
Do they get their memory back?: No / Nope / No. They occasionally remember tidbits, but if voiced outloud the universe will right itself and he won't even remember he was talking. / No
âFunâ facts: stuck in a time loop / time loop torment nexus sufferer. the magical amnesia (and trauma) gave them also more regular memory issues - they forget words and things easily, lose track of stuff, at one point he has difficulty with remembering the names of people he has been travelling with for months / They like woodcarving and walking into strangers' homes. / They are the timelooping protagonist of the game! Their favorite food is palmiers (though I've also been told since last round it's actually Malanga Fritters so who knows) and they are allergic to pineapples! Uses He/They pronouns!
