Jen softened a little as she listened to her son talk about Judy. She knew the brunette loved them like her own -- hell, she was probably a better Mom to them than she was. It made her smile (internally, of course) to know that Charlie loved her just as much back, even if he had a funny way of showing it. 

Her moment of softness was short lived as soon as the last sentence came out of Charlies mouth. 

“Fuck. You’d better not have fucking said anything to him, Char.” Jen warned, “I mean it!” She could imagine all too well Charlie telling him something ridiculous about scissors.

Judy couldn’t help but let herself get a bit excited about the idea of actually getting to spend more time with Jen. “I don’t think I could ever get sick of you Jen. I just love you so much.. As a friend.. and really were already family.. What’s spending just a little more time with you?” Squeezing Jen’s hand Judy smiled wide as her confidence built a bit. “I am not Ted I won’t leave you.. Plus putting Lorna in her place is a good thing, she can’t get away with treating you the way she does,”

“Yeah well this will fucking show her.” She grinned, pulling back from the hug but keeping her hand on Judy’s arm, rubbing soothing motions. 

“I guess we better think about how to tell the boys, huh?” She laughed nervously. How the fuck was she supposed to explain to Charlie that she was now suddenly a lesbian? She could already hear his quick witted remarks, He really was her son, 

3:30pm. She sighed as she checked her watch. “I’m gonna need some liquid courage for this shit..” She muttered, dragging Judy to the kitchen with her. Tonight was as good a time as ever.

“I don’t know why I fucking said it, okay Jude?” Jen huffed, her hands flailing in the air. “It just came out, I couldn’t just shove it back in there!” 

She turned to face the the younger women, her eyes softening a little as she took in the puppy-like expression that seemed to permanently take up residence on her features. 

“I’m sorry, okay?” Taking a step closer, she folded her arms across her chest, trying to hide the vulnerability she felt at what she was about to request of her best friend, “I know this is a lot to ask, but I just really can’t face telling Lorna that I lied about this. She’d never fucking let me live it down. ” A sigh escaped her lips as she looked up towards the sky.

God. What had she gotten herself into now?

“Please, Jude? We only have to pretend we’re dating for a little bit, then we can tell her we broke it off or something.” She shrugged, hoping Judy wouldn’t think she was absolutely insane for suggesting they actually go along with this.

Though she wouldn’t be wrong for thinking as such. This was insane.

Judy couldn’t believe it Jen had told Lorna of all people that they were a couple. Her and Jen a couple.. This was actually a secret dream of hers, her and Jen just together as a real couple. Yes this was just playing pretend..But this was Jen asking her for a favor and who was she to say no. It was insane yes but really so was their whole relationship really. She knew she was going go along with this crazy idea. She had to. It was the only way to help Jen save face with the woman who made it her life’s work to discredit her and put her down.

“Well the idea is nuts and you really need to work on saying things to yourself before screaming them out at people. But pretending to be together won’t be that hard. Henry already thinks we are a couple, his new family. But Charlie is going to be a hard sell… and what happens when we eventually break up?. I will cry and you just hate when I cry… But you know I’m in your corner always, I’d do anything for you. Anything to make up for Ted..”

Jens heart broke a little at the mention of Ted. Not because she missed him - although she did some days - but because she hated that Judy still felt so much guilt. She had forgiven her long ago, how could she not when she walked around like the fucking sun that lit up everyone’s life? God, Jen knows she certainly lit up hers. 

“You’ve already made up for that, Jude..” She spoke softly, earnestly. Her hands found their way to Judy’s, taking them in her own as she often found herself doing when their conversations turned serious. 

“You’d really do this for me? I know it’s a lot.. I just really fucking hate that women.” She laughed, attempting to lighten the atmosphere a little. Maybe this wouldn’t be so hard after all. The were practically joined at the hip anyway. 

“Thank you.” It came out barely above a whisper as she pulled her in tightly, hugging her. She really was thankful Judy was agreeing to go along with this. 

“You know this means you’re gonna have to move into my bedroom full time now, right?” She laughed, “You sure you’re ready to put up with so much of me?” It was a joke, but on some level Jen was genuinely concerned Judy would see her, truly see her, and run for the hills; like Ted had.
