i needed an AU that cast Will as the supernatural creature and Hannibal as the human, and I landed on a selkie AU. Will meets the fierce pirate captain Hannibal Lecter aboard his ship and is sufficiently fascinated to follow him home. When the captain steals and hides away his sealskin, he is forced to stay, and the two become increasingly entangled—even as Will grows sicker the longer he is kept away from the sea

Okay so basically the premise is that this is an undergrad au instead of a grad school au like the movie was bc no way Will and Hannibal would be in the same grad school programs but I can buy them having some psych and gen ed classes together if they were in the same year of undergrad. Their Swedish friend takes them to meet his “family” the summer after freshman year

Hannibal gets to be May Queen bc he’s clear to their Swedish friend that he wants to be a part of the women’s activities (you know like the cooking and stuff since he’s a little weird about that)

Will is the one the cultists have designated for Breeding and instead of being like “oh no he’s cheating on me” (partially bc he actually loves Will and partially bc they’re not actually dating yet) Hannibal is like “oh my god he’s being gang-raped by cultists” and then they. Kill most of the cultists. And flee in the truck that presumably actually existed? For our purposes we say the truck existed

Then they have to go back to Will’s dad’s house Horribly Traumatized and clinging to each other bc look Hannibal may have been through a lot of shit before but getting drugged and manipulated by cultists is a) real triggering and b) independently v upsetting. Plus he had to see Will get gang raped. And Will yk, got gang raped by cultists??? Anyway they’re v upset

But they bond even closer through that upsetness and having saved each other and they deal with their trauma much more healthily bc they have each other and it’s gay and good

And also, most importantly: Hannibal’s the May Queen

It is well and truly hilarious to me that characters like Frederick Chilton and Freddie Lounds manage to be the (relatively) unproblematic faves in this fandom.  Are they horrible?  Absolutely.  Is anyone going to come after you for saying you enjoy the hell out of them?  Nope!

Look Chilton is an absolute bastard who sucks a lot, don’t get me wrong here.

But he is also an absolute delight whose every moment on screen is wonderful bc of the sheer force of Raul Esparza’s charisma

He’s like a yappy chihuahua among a pack of ravenous tigers. Sure, the chihuahua barks at you and nips at your ankles and commits heinous crimes against his patients, but you’ve got bigger concerns right now. He’s harmless, and the fact that he’s trying so hard to be scary is almost endearing when he’s so thoroughly outclassed

Also I have immense respect for the impression Raul Esparza did of Chilton’s actor in Silence of the Lambs. I thought it was just a weird performance, but actually the OG Chilton was the weird one; his is just an incredibly on point reference to the OG

Yes! I mean, as with so many characters in Hannibal, there's a huge distinction between Chilton as a human being and Chilton as a character in a TV show. Chilton is an unethical, incompetent, narcissistic, vain, attention-seeking horror of a person who you would absolutely detest if you met him in real life. Chilton as a piece of entertainment is a snarky, petty delight with a wonderful variety of facial expressions and fabulous comic timing 💗
