This is how any corporation functions. First, increasing profits is done by attracting more customers. Then, once they have all the customers they're going to get, increasing profits is done by increasing prices or cutting costs.

Eugenics also plays a huge part in this, particularly fatphobia and ableism. They started doing this after the shockumentary Supersize Me became a smash hit in the 2000s and the fearmongering douche Morgan Spurlock spread all kinds of misinformation about fast food will kill your kids and inevitably make them so fat they end up on some reality TV show like My 600lb Life. Spurlock, however, was a chronic alcoholic who was drinking constantly off-screen until he developed liver failure.

There have been multiple studies done attempting to recreate Spurlock's results to see if fast food really will kill and the answer is NO. All of those studies came back negative. Either way, though, the damage was done and McDonald's and the fast food industry's reputations were ruined. They had to rebrand in order convince people they were child killers.
