those who don’t read the manga probably aren’t aware how much being on the court, playing, being useful to his teammates means to kuroko, so I want to give special attention to this scene when riko says ‘kuroko-kun, you’re out’
he just lost to aomine. every move he polished in thoughts of defeating him failed. his vanishing drive was seen through, his ignite pass kai was stopped as if it was nothing. he lost even before the real battle started. but there is more, he lost his cool too. when aomine stole the ball from him, kuroko entered the state of denial, such huge shock that his mind couldn’t deal with it. and he failed his teammates by firing ignite pass and letting it be stolen yet again.
and now he was taken out. after all he’s been through in middle school, kuroko is prepared to sit on the bench, he’s prepared to be taken out of the game because of his stamina. but he isn’t prepared to fail his friends. he feels useless, since there is nothing he can do in the face of aomine’s talent. he is broken in his helplessness and the only answer to riko’s order he can manage is a weak ‘yes’. with all the pain and anguish he feels inside, he gives up, because there is nothing he could possibly do.
this is probably the most intense moment kuroko has ever had in the anime. he is powerless against aomine, he knew that from the very beginning, but still he had hope. and this hope was now crushed, while he could do nothing other than watch.
as much as this scene can be spun towards aokuro, in fact it really is about kuroko himself, what he’s been through and what his teammates mean to him. and they are everything, they are friends, but they are also the first people who need him not only as a way towards victory, but also as a comrade, a real person, sharing their happiness and sorrows. that’s why he feels so pathetic and powerless, it was always him who saved seirin in the time of need, and now he can’t do a thing.
there is also the undeniable fact that kuroko wants to save aomine, that is yet another wound on his heart, but now he can do nothing to even try to close it
