I made a deal with myself that I'd try to make my own version of which ever would win, and the lily gown it is. And now I have time (and a deadline in October) to try to tackle this project.

The thing with the lily gown, as with most HoW gowns, is that several versions of the same concept exists. The surviving one is credited of being one of Countess Greffulhe's. And perhaps it is. But it's clearly not the one she wore for the famous photographs unless it was heavily altered afterwards.

Most obviously the front is different, but the hem also has a frill that's not on the photographed version.

I've been debating with myself which version to pick, but I have nitpicks about both:

The collar is better in the photograph version

I like that the main part of the gown is all black velvet in the surviving version

The flow of the side front appliqué works better with the contrast colour front panel in the photograph version. I feel like there's no reason for the side stems to start abruptly from the waist like that when it's all one solid surface like in the surviving version.

So I'm going to do some mixing where I pick my favourite elements from both.

At least the backs of both versions are the same, except for the hem frill, which I don't like and will leave out.

So, this is the beginning. First I'm going to need a new corset, as one of my old ones is on its last legs, and the other old one puts pressure on my lower back in an uncomfortable way.
