" the risk has been set from the beginning but ángel knew what he was doing. he had just thought alice would have taken that risk with him. Jae couldn't help the laughter that spilled from his lips. He knew he could be a little cold, rough around the edges, but he had his moments. Javi tended to bring that out of him. "Well, considering I have to pretend that I'm with you, and not just a plus one," he teased back, "I'm sure we can think of something you can do to make it up to me."
While he didn't mind accompanying him, and preferred it to be himself to support his friend, Yoon-jae wasn't exactly too keen on weddings. He's only ever been to two; the first where his love and long-term affair married another man, and his own. Which, he wasn't exactly jumping for joy at his own wedding. "When is it?"
SOMETHING inside him melts at yoon-jae's laughter; pride flaring at being able to chip away the cold exterior. " the fact that you get to pretend that you're with me should be counted as a prize on its own, " javi points out, smirk already drawn on his lips. at the question, javi is stopped short, quickly retrieving his phone to pull up the -- shudders -- wedding website. " um. okay. so i'm going to tell you the date and you can't hate me because i've had that deposition this week that's had me on my ass. plus this was one of those ' deal with it when i have to deal with it ' type of priorities. anyway it's tomorrow night. eyes dipped away from the femme, hands clenched at his side. the homme has been trying to work on his anger & she wasn’t exactly helping. shit the entire situtation wasn’t helpful. exactly why he was attempting to play it off & act nonchalant to it. “ of course i fucking care! you think it’s easy not going & beating his ass? it’s taking everything in me & you ain’t fucking helping! this what you wanted, right! fucking christ, you’re the one that decided to fuck around. you do it to get a rise out of me? that fucking desperate for drama, dahlia? ”
AT jayden's anger, dahlia's fears are assuaged which is the only real indicator that there is something deeply wrong with her. it makes her giddy knowing that she can pull such a reaction and while her actions may have been deplorable, it settles something in the pit of her stomach. " you wanna beat his ass? you'd do that for me? " honing in on the wrong thing, romano -- even as the thought fires up her insides. against her better judgment -- and really, against anyone who has the sense to read the room -- she reaches up to frame jayden's face between her hands. " i didn't mean to fuck around. you know that, right? i didn't want it to come to that, but at least now i know, yeah? it's just you from now on, i promise baby. tell me again, though. how mad were you when you found out? "
fingers met hers in the middle of the table, eyes falling upon him. it was easy to pick up when he was playing his part in front of people, even when she thinks they’re alone at the restaurant he still acts as if this was official. “well, it’s gorgeous.. such a shame i didn’t get you something. might have to pay you back later.” ximena plays along perfectly, smile forming across her lips. at first, ximena was extremely uncomfortable with the proposal — wasn’t even entirely positive if she knew how to play along. though, he eases her into it. making their time together actually enjoyable and not just some scheme that they’re doing. as picture was captured, fingers wraps around his phone to see how she looks. one of her deals was that she okayed everything he posted before he done so. “he actually swiped up on the photo of us on the couch.. y’know the one where my legs were over yours.” she mentions, fingers instinctively grazes his. “reacting to yours? well that’s an improvement from no contact at all.. obviously she’s watching your every move.”
THERE'S something to be said by how natural the whole charade is played out. ximena acts out the perfect girlfriend -- sometimes to the point where oliver has to remind himself that it isn't real. surely there's nothing that would have him forget that bit -- especially when his ex is still clearly his priority -- but a reminder doesn't hurt.
he watches her evaluate the picture he's taken as she's done so with others that he has saved on his phone. oliver doesn't mention the candids he secretly has stored; convincing himself that it's something he can use further down this pretense they act.
" oh shit you can tell if someone's swiped up? he's definitely gonna try to do something now. " oliver is pretty proud of himself, he won't lie. mutually beneficial ensures that he holds up his end of the deal and he's nothing if not a man who keeps his word. so if ximena's ex needs a little pushing from his part as well, oliver certainly won't half ass it. " we gotta up the ante, though. pictures are cute and all but i think we have to graduate to boomerangs and maybe if you're feeling daring enough, a tik tok challenge. what do you say? "
The woman smiled as he leaned close to her. Abigail naturally ran cool compared to Scott, so the warmth was pleasant. "I'm not?" She pouted herself and tried to get back to the painting in front of her. It had to be finished by the end of the day. She was listening, though. "Okay, that's fair, but....What did I forget? Seriously?"
IN his arms, nothing else has ever felt so right. it's a comfortable type of romance; something that scott has always felt he's never really deserved, but abigail manages to chase all those demons away. “ it’s the annual teachers mixer thing for the county. i’m told we were to bring a plus one and who better to show off in front of my coworkers than you? there'll be food and drinks, love. also cheeky comments from some arseholes who don't believe that you don't exist, but we can easily just ignore them. "

"You can fix me— no really, you can." His taunt tastes far more bitter than intended, a failed articifical coating on the most dreadful medicine. All he's left with now is giving them a taste of their own remedy in it's sickly sweet form. "That's what you want to hear, isn't it? Why you're still around after everything?"
VEXED by how lennon is quick to strike with his words, celeste takes the bait. “ is it any wonder — ,” she hisses through clenched teeth. “ — as to why i bother staying? you think it’s to fix you? and all the pieces you come in? ” arms cross to keep her steady but the trembling is still minute under her touch. “ you must think me a fucking saint to be able to do that. i’m still around because — no. you don’t get a because. if you haven’t clued in as to why yet, then that’s your problem. stop trying to make it mine. ”
Theo's incredibly amused by Miguel's insistence on them being just friends. There's no way. Theo's never been one to bullshit. Always got that tongue that gets him into trouble one way or another. He wonders if Miguel does this with all of his friends. "I wonder what we are." It's not a question because he isn't looking for an answer. Theo goes easily at the other man pulls him down. He's always been easy for the other. He always goes along with his shit ideas too. Like this one. His thighs spread as he settles onto the other's lap. He likes how solid the other man feels beneath him. "You're pretty." Theo tells him honestly. His hazy green gaze is locked onto Miguel's mouth before it flicks up to his eyes. Theo pointedly doesn't say please. He knows he doesn't have to. The kiss feels like a punch. Theo shivers into the press of it. He settles his arms around Miguel's shoulders so they stay just like this. He rocks his hips down just like friends would. "Say we're just friends."
MIGUEL’S brain refuses to focus on anything but the weight of theo on his lap; hands run along the side of his thighs with his nails lightly scratching against the skin. it’s just as well — theo’s words would have pulled questions that he’s not ready to think about. “ we’re whatever we want, baby, ” his reply is forthright; earnest in its weight because that’s the simplicity of being with him. it’s fun and daring and quite honestly, it’s the frankness of the other man that has miguel coming back. “ you’re downright gorgeous .” arms around him has miguel pulling him closer even if there’s no space left between them. bottom lip is tugged between his teeth; keening when theo bucks down against him. it takes every ounce of his self control not to rut up against the man and after a beat too long, the demand registers. “ just — fuck — friends. ” miguel knows better than to rile theo up but if it makes their night a little more interesting then there’s no harm. lips leave his and latches on to the hinge of theo’s jaw where it meets his neck. miguel starts to work a mark there — biting and sucking and licking — because he’s such a good friend.
perhaps she shouldn't be too nonchalant about this , nonetheless , he seems to be like he's talking a big deal out of something that could be nothing . however -- she does need a good adventure to get herself out of this funk that she's been going through , which , of course , has nothing to do with him , no . she's enjoying this rather stimulating conversation with this guy , who's name she doesn't even know , although , is that her big problem at the moment ?
she's stepping outside , gathering his ' brownie points ' for opening the door for her -- how brave , she thinks . yet , there he goes again , waxing on about the supposed pool there is , not that she's not interested , she is : she just doesn't believe it . " oh , is that so ? " words muddled in with a slight twinge of interest , arms crossed over her chest as she huffs lightly , chewing down on her lower lip , eyes on him as he's telling her these fun facts . " pretty sure that's not what they use it for , but if they did , that'd be so ironic . i'm confident that it's some mechanism for people to help their water related trauma or something like that , i wouldn't think that deep about it . "
THE crisp night air sobers him a little, but it does nothing to ebb miguel’s excitement. this is what college is meant for, he thinks. adventures with strangers that he will bring up as stories in the future. ‘ hey remember that time that pretty girl and i found the secret philo pool? ’ he would say. friends may or may not believe him but miguel will always have this. and if the buzz of alcohol keeps everything in a blurry haze, then that only highlights the magic of the night.
cobbled stones are not friendly to drunken steps but miguel manages to keep upright — if not by his center of gravity but by the waving of his arms to illustrate his words. “ come on! you wouldn’t be thinking too deep about a pool in the philosophy building? there’s a joke there. i just gotta find it. besides, if it is for water related trauma, then why don’t they just use the gym pool hm? checkmate! ” at his supposed victory, miguel jumps to try and high five the statue at the center of the quad — try being the operative word. instead, his hand finds purchase near the thigh area so miguel high fives that instead before stumbling down and trying to keep his balance.
they reach the building without any encounters from campus security so he’s taking it as a sign to venture on. the locked entrance door, however, proves to be a sign pointing otherwise. “ okay so problem. we’re gonna need to break in. any ideas? ”
philip, what an ugly name. even before his best friend betrothed himself to a guy who held the name, river had never liked it. it sounded like a medication, something sterile and boring and outdated. "right. well, i'm happy for ya," river gritted through a forced grin.
the man across from him knew him better than anyone ever had, and better than anyone ever would. even if, way off in the distant future, river did manage to fall in love and marry someone else (though that seemed like a very far fetched impossibility,) they'd never know river like mathieu did. they wouldn't have been there for his upbringing, the awkward teenage years, the nights spent on the hoods of their friends cars with stale, warm beer they'd stolen from loading trucks behind convenience stores before they were of age, the weeks river had spent killing himself in college to make his parents proud of him, only to disappoint them and become a nurse instead of a doctor, the times his heart broke each and every instance he let it tangle itself with another's over the years again and again. none had compared to mathieu anyway, and that was the biggest heartbreak of all.
despite how well he knew him, river prayed his best friend could not read his mind right now or sense how hard it was for him to breathe properly in this moment.
though he wanted to make a quip about philip being a safe choice, not a big swing, he kept his mouth shut. instead, he did his best not to show the way his stomach flipped inside his body at mathieu's words. "i'm glad you rank me above long lost cousins or whoever," river offered, humbly, as he smiled, stupidly, and offered a teasing suggestion. "we can run away right now, you and me, if you want."
IT’S a rather stuffy event, mathieu must admit — even for him — , but he hopes that the obvious discomfort river displays isn’t meant for him. despite the abrupt engagement, mathieu has never been more sure of a decision and he can only hope that his best friend sees it for what it is: his attempt at finally growing up. regardless of the lack of any emotional depth — none will hold a candle to what he feels for river, after all — it's a way of life that leaves no room for judgment.
and if he wishes that circumstances would be different, then it is no one's business but his own. mathieu has made the choices in his life; has marred the respectability that his parents have tried to build. what could he offer to the one that he's truly longed for since the beginning? what right does mathieu have to want? he's content with memories of late night drives when the world has become too much, evenings helping river study for his exams, and morning afters when mathieu finds his way across town just to sleep in a bed that didn't expect anything from him. it should be enough.
“ you rank above everybody. ” the conviction behind the words is enunciated with a slight jab of his finger. digit fails to draw back and instead trails the collar of river’s shirt. mathieu has always found excuses to touch. “ are you kidnapping me from my own engagement party? that’s ballsy of you. ” eyes flit towards his and finds the teasing there. mathieu ignores the soft pang of disappointment and plays along. “ where would you take me then after stealing me away? philip would hunt us down. ” he wouldn’t — or at least, mathieu doesn’t believe he would. a wounded pride, though, shouldn’t be underestimated so easily. “ i’d run away with you — if you asked. ” the words are too open, too vulnerable and so they’re followed with: “ give this party some drama. ”
⸻ eight cylinder engine not a soft hum , but rather an intentful hymn as they drove through winding roads . deciding to take a scenic detour , as to further enjoy their time together . before their night was surely churned upside down , disrupted by clubbing and alcohol . whereas rafe had never an issue with it , even now , perhaps he’s far too hesitant to acknowledge the extent of his enjoyment . enjoyment of mathieu’s company in this sober , non-drunken state . wants to live there for a little bit longer . ❝ why don’t i ever let you drive ? ❞ eyes batted away from bend in the road , admirable question to say the least . for which rafe leaned over , grasping onto matheiu’s palm and laying it barely at the corner of the steering wheel . ❝ do you even know what to do with a steering wheel ? ❞
VEHICLE truly an art form as they pass through the city; streams of light cascading against glassed window and not even sobriety can stop mathieu from appreciating the beauty of it. or maybe it’s the way it dances across the planes of the man next to him. peripheral vision grants him hues of reds streaking across a cut jaw when paused in traffic and a vivid verdant atop a strong brow when permitted to go. his question was only thrown as a repartee — not meant to be an actual challenge — but rafe has his hand on the wheel and there must be something wrong with mathieu to feel a thrill with that. the action itself isn’t erotic per se but it’s a heady feeling nonetheless. “ i will crash us into the nearest building, ” he warns, only half joking. fingers curl around the curve of the wheel and he’s forced to arch towards the driver. “ oh i’m sorry is the wheel meant to be complicated? does it do more than go where i want it to go? ” slight tilt to the right and the porsche follows. to the left and he wonders if those behind them think they’re already under some sort of influence. mathieu has no eyes on the road; only trusts that rafe won’t really let him crash them both. “ i’ll really kill us if you miss the turn. ” city lights have yet to indicate that they’re somewhere that uses neon. “ how long til we reach downtown proper? ”
" i mean , if that's what you wanna do , & claim days like that . . then i declare saturdays ' take nita out ' days , no ifs , ands or buts , scott ! " she laughs a little , noting his bravery in his tone of voice , impressed at how he's holding this over her head , but she doesn't mind it too much , she finds it fascinating , actually . & she's holding up her end of the deal , although , she's not telling him where they're going , in fact . " you make it sound like we're married & we're having a date night , which , by the way , you'd be so lucky to be married to me , not gonna lie ! " the teasing notion in his voice causing for another laugh to slip out , nodding her head at his words . " mm , you've already looked at the menu , haven't you ? "
MOCK outrage plays out in an indignant huff. “ you can’t just take saturdays! those are weekends. weekends are meant for ‘ scott gets to relax ’ things! how am i meant to relax if you’re just going to lug me around for god knows what? ” there’s a crack in his little tirade, a small hint of a smile that curves the corners of his lips. it’s fun, this banter they share. whilst scott naturally has a way with people — that’s the fear of disappointing those around him that rears its ugly head in — he doesn’t have to try as hard with nita. “ i can’t believe you’re announcing our divorce like this. what about the children? ” hand on his chest as if truly shocked, he shakes his head in disbelief before breaking character and bursting into laughter. “ you wish! maybe you’d be lucky to land someone like me. i’d treat you the way you’re about to treat me tonight. chop chop, d’alia. ” marches on towards the door; a little too eagerly. “ you know that scene? in that one film? ‘ perhaps a salad? perhaps not. i’ll have the steak covered in onions ’ etcetera etcetera? me but with four different appetizers. ”
