“Wait wait wait,” he waved his hand slightly, “You mean to tell me you have a cannibalisic plant and you’ve never mentioned it before? Dude! That-“

He inhaled to stop himself from over sharing, glancing away as he sighed softly “Would have been cool to know sooner. How long have you had it? Where did you get it? You realize your gonna have to let me check it out now, right?”

He was already planning what he would do given access to the supposed cannibal plant, especially if it was the same family as..

“I can by tomorrow afternoon, Pretty sure I’ll be able to shake my tutor pretty easily and just make up the work later”

Carlos smiled slightly. "Yeah, uh... we found Charlie in the back of the parking lot, behind the lab actually," he said. "It was small at the time, and was growing out of the asphalt. We put it with some other bean plants, and it just... eats them. Like, the stem opens up like a set of jaws and noms on them."

He made a complicated but bemused face at Max's suggestion to skip his school work. "I mean, as long as you're skipping for scientific purposes, I suppose I can condone that," he joked. "But let's talk over the dinner I promised you. Come on, then," he said, leading them to his own car.

Yeah, the sooner he got some red meat the better.

He furrowed his brow in thought, the cannibal bean plant didn’t sound much like the odd weed he knew once, but any leads were worth researching as Carlos liked to say

He opened his mouth to brush off how easy his homework was, but the beep of the car locking made him stop, hands gripping his hoodie before he forced himself to relax them

“Oh we’re.. taking your car..? I thought- Thought you said it wasn’t far”

Carlos tried to explain himself. "Well, yes," he said. "But you know... the faster we get there, the better, right? And honestly, I'm starving and craving a bit. Besides, the car is a hybrid - so its not like a huge waste of gas to drive there, right?"

He then glanced at Max and he grew a little concerned. "Hang on... if you'd rather walk, you can tell me," he said kindly. Honestly, Carlos did want to take the car for those few extra precious minutes eating, but it was purely for his own comfort. He thought he could last, he supposed, without for a bit longer.

He forced a nonchalant smile as he shrugged, not meeting Carlos’ gaze

“Hey whatever you want, I’m personally more of a long car ride kinda guy but if you wanna drive the few blocks I guess I could indulge you”

A load of bullshyte but hopefully it was believable enough, he could manage a short ride if it came down to it, probably…

Truth be told, he wasn’t all that sure what to talk about when most of all he could think of was the meal they were heading towards, glancing around for any possible topic

“So, uhh.. anything new in the lab..?”

Carlos shrugged. "There's a cannibal bean plant," he said. "It... eats other bean pants. But it's not a parasite - it physically opens up and eats them. It's bizarre and scientifically interesting."

The bean plant was kind of old news, but Max didn't visit the lab often, and that was generally a safe topic worth mentioning.

He didn't need to tell him about the failed experiments and research into the cause of a werewolf curse... that wouldn't be necessary.

“Ask him myself huh..?” He rose a brow again, chuckling softly, though he had to admit the thought was at least a bit exciting, he’d seen Cecil around but hadn’t really met him yet

He put his hands back in his pockets, looking at Carlos with a touch of confusion “Weren’t you a vegetarian? .. Or am I think of an old tutor” he shook his head slightly “Eh, Not important I guess, How good is that steak dinner? What sides does it come with?”

Carlos glanced at Max, a little surprised. "I've always eaten meat," he said. He then looked away. "Though, admittedly today I have a special craving I suppose..."

He cleared his throat. "Well, the steak is kind of a poor cut, but they'll make it however you like it. Rare, medium, well, charred, carbon... mooing even, if you're of a particular demographic." He meant the zookeeper in Night Vale, but now that he thought about something freshly slaughtered his mouth started to water a bit.

Gross.

He crossed his arms as he watched Carlos come out and head to the coat closet

“Are you sure you’re married to that Cecil guy and not this place? Or are you just hiding out here cause you did something embarrassing?”

Though Max was always a bit flat in tone, it had gotten easier to tell when he was joking, they had gotten at least a little closer in the month or two they knew each other

That’s why it was easy to tell that something wasn’t quite right Carlos, maybe whatever he was working on here made him stink weird, or he ran into something in the field. Max couldn’t put his finger on it, but Carlos was just.. off

He furrowed his brows as he followed behind the scientist, he wasn’t moving weirdly or dressed differently, Max wondered if he should ask, he knew Carlos was one of the few to not brush off whatever questions he had, actually cared to answer them all but would he be honest if something was off or bothering him?

Max sighed softly, speeding up slight so they were side by side “Hey what’s the name of the restaurant again? And please tell me it’s within walking distance this time..” granted most of the town was, max still hated getting into cars

Carlos pulled out a nice, knit lab coat with pumpkins and cobweb designs in it before swapping it with his work lab coat. Cecil got him this one, and Carlos already loved it for the holiday.

He laughed at Max' comment. "Well, you are welcome to ask Cecil that question," he said. "I think he'll say that it changes day by day."

He put on the coat and shut the closet, coming over to head outside. Carlos didn't notice that Max had noticed anything different, so he wasn't bothered at all. He was just trying to tolerate that dry smell that he kind of wanted to wolf out and roll in, like an exotic perfume. God, wolf brain was so annoying... "It's within walking distance," he assured the young man. "We're just going to the diner... they have some bacon that I wanted very much. Or maybe the steak dinner? Yeah - the steak dinner sounds better. I'll get that."

Max had checked his phone for one reason or another, and he only meant for it to be a quick glance over his notifications and then back to his school work, but one of his games had a new event that he wanted to get the jump on before his group started hounding him about missing the early stages of it

He sank into his chair comfortably as he idly tapped away, but he stopped, staring at the event name for a long moment

‘Halloween eve event!’ The cartoonishly creepy font read

Halloween eve, Max lower his phone, turning his head to look out the window at the multi coloured leaves shifting in the breeze, when did he stop counting the days the moment October came? When did his passion for making or getting best costume wear down? When did one of his favourite holidays become.. just another day?

Maybe it was moving nearly every year and not having friends to go with, or maybe it was having to skip it two years in a row while he healing, or maybe it had to do with the fact that he couldn’t even eat candy anymore

Maybe he’s just had enough of ghouls and monsters for a lifetime

He lazily lifted his phone again, absentmindedly wondering if he should even bother this year, most of his friends were online and he wasn’t even sure if Nightvale even celebrates Halloween

Only 15 and his Halloween game was already over, “Damn it..” he mumbled at the ‘game over’ screen before rolling his eyes and restarting

Were they supposed to meet at the restaurant or Carlos’s lab..?

He shoved his hands back into his pockets as he walked, for once not feeling so out of place in his sweater, even if the desert town lacked the crisp feeling autumn had in most of the other towns he lived in

Not that he felt the cold anymore, or the heat really, all he really felt these days was hunger, which was probably why he impatiently showed up at Carlos’s lab anyway

Knocking on the door as he walked past it, he glanced around the mostly quiet room

“Yo Carlos are you still here? C’mooon, All the good table are gonna be taken by the time we get there, I don’t wanna listen- uh sit near the plants again..”

Carlos was washing his hands finally, mask and other PPE gone now that this stage of his experiment was done, when he smelled it; a sudden appearance of a stench of something rotten. No, not quite that wet rotten, but an older sort of rot. It was weird.

He heard Max' call and realized who it was - maybe Max walked by the dead animal pyre on his way here? Who knows, but something was rank. Wolf brain wanted to investigate, but human brain was pretty grossed out. For now, Carlos decided to lean into Wolf Brain at least a little, to make the smell more bearable.

Carlos headed to the lobby, waving goodbye to the other scientists, and opened the front door.

"Hey Max! Sorry about that - I'm ready to head out, just let me get my coat."

If one were paying attention, they could see that Carlos' deep brown eyes were now lined with an outer ring of gold.

A nice steak, with some of the red stuff pooling with each cut. And the striations of the flesh - so tender and chewy.

If he wasn't careful, he was going to drool straight through his N95.

Carlos shook his head. He had to finish this experiment. Then he was supposed to meet up with Max for a dinner.

Carlos knew what was going on. Cecil saw it all last night. He was being supportive of course, but Carlos didn't want it to interfere with his scheduled experiments.

But here he was, letting the curse let his mind wander for dinner. He tried to hurry up as much as he was able, to get away from his delicate chemical experiment. Then he started to clean up.

Once again Carlos found himself walking to the White Sand Ice Cream Shoppe on a too-warm-to-be-comfortable day. He had on his summer lab coat with a pair of shorts and his usual pair of steel toed boots, as they were safe to wear.

It was his turn to feed the claw-bees something, and he thought with how it was today he'd get them some ice cream as well as a little something for himself.

It was hot day, Max knew, and that meant it was the perfect day for a frosty treat

Stepping inside the shoppe he immediately hear the overworked ac rattling overhead, the smell of cream and different flavors with vague under tones of cleaners had become familiar summer day smell

Still, he had almost mindless pulled out his phone while he waited his turn til he realized he recognized the man a head of him

“Cosmos? No uh, Carlos” he half muttered, they hadn’t really talked since their meeting a few months ago and if Max was honest he wasn’t sure if he should say anything now

Carlos blinked, wondering who said his name, before turning around. At first he looked at eye-level, expecting someone his size, but then quickly looked down before seeing the young man. "Oh! You! Hello - Max, was it?" he asked with a smile. "Nice to see you again. How are things?"

He wasn’t expecting Carlos to turn around but he smiled, somewhat awkwardly, back up at the older man

“Oh uh- hey, thing have been..” stressful looking for new hunting grounds “.. Interesting? A-At school I mean”

He cleared his throat, adjusting one his fingerless gloves “How’ve thing been with you..?”

“You know most people just do jigsaws or crosswords, really, there’s gotta be some other ‘puzzle’ more interesting out there than this mess..’, he avoided looking at the dinner mess he left, if he was being perfectly honest, he didn’t like such sights when he wasn’t hungry

“The only thing more interesting than this is the ongoing study of the Eldritch Gods that watch over Night Vale,” Carlos said, “and sometimes their interference with the town. They’ve been interfering a little bit more lately…” Carlos hummed contemplatively and rubbed his chin.

He pocketed his hair sample and continued sorting through for more samples from the kill site.

“Like I said, this could just be the gal over at the zoo, but it’d be very interesting if I discovered a new species of wolf working through this, you know?”

“The only thing more interesting than this is the ongoing study of the Eldritch Gods that watch over Night Vale,” Carlos said, “and sometimes their interference with the town. They’ve been interfering a little bit more lately…” Carlos hummed contemplatively and rubbed his chin.

He pocketed his hair sample and continued sorting through for more samples from the kill site.

“Like I said, this could just be the gal over at the zoo, but it’d be very interesting if I discovered a new species of wolf working through this, you know?”

He mumbled something under his breath, nervously picking at his sleeve for a moment, “maybe.. maybe I could swing by and ask her before.. before-“

His eyes go wide for a moment before he quickly pulled his phone out of his pocket

“Oh crap,” he nearly whispered “I’m gonna be late for school!” While he technically didnt to pubic school, his tutor would have a lot of questions if he was late

“I need to get back to town, we aren’t that far out right..?”

He was somewhat relieved to hear Carlos did have any strong theories yet, “Yea maybe you could spend a few days chasing each of those.. shape-shifters or whatever.”

He glanced into the sand wastes “Or maybe just not look into it all, I mean, who knows how many animals could be out there just.. Killing each other for their next meals” he shrugged

“Awe, but where would the fun in that be?” Carlos asked. “I joke, but really - I enjoy doing this work and solving a puzzle. Just as long as whatever it is isn’t bothering my family. Unlike last time…” he murmured.

Carlos grew quiet for a moment, a frown on his face as he remembered how he mercilessly murdered the giant centipede that he thought had threatened his niece at school.

He shook his head and capped the glass tube with the hair sample.

He groaned softly as he pushed himself up, shaking the sand out of his hoodie, “yeah uh, hey, I’m.. alright I guess?”

He wasn’t a good liar, but thinking of a lie in twelve seconds and committing to it is hard

“Sooo… what happened here..?” He glanced from the pile to the equipment with uneasiness

Carlos smiled at the kid. “Well, this here is a kill site,” he said. “I’m trying not to take too much from it in case whatever did this is still hungry. It looks like it was a deer, but the realtor that lives inside all deer might have escaped. They won’t live long though unless they find another deer to live in.”

The scientist put down the Danger Meter and picked up some small tweezers and a glass tube for hair samples.

“I don’t know what or who did this just yet - it doesn’t look like any of the wolf varieties, so it could have been a human. Maybe even a shape shifter - the gal at the zoo eats animals quite frequently so this could be hers.”

He wasn’t really paying attention to any land marks when he hunting last night, which made it hard finding his way back to the scene

He sighed as he considered giving up, almost turning around til what sounded like scream almost made him jump out of his hood, but in his startle he slid down sand dune

After taking a few seconds to recover from two heart attacks, he sits up and finally sees what he spent the last half hour looking for, and scientist he was really hoping not to see again

The older man seemed distracted at least, maybe he if he’s quick enough he can quietly get up and run before he gets seen

One of Carlos’ meters beeped and he paused in his rendition to take a look at it. It was the Danger Meter, and it read ‘Moderate’.

“Huh,” he said aloud, not at all sounding alarmed, and he picked up the device before looking around.

He then paused upon seeing the boy at the bottom of a nearby dune.

“Oh! Hello again! It’s you - how are you?” Carlos offered him a smile and lowered the device. He wasn’t surprised it read ‘moderate’ danger on another person - people had the potential to be the most dangerous, after all. It was just fact.

He groaned softly as he pushed himself up, shaking the sand out of his hoodie, “yeah uh, hey, I’m.. alright I guess?”

He wasn’t a good liar, but thinking of a lie in twelve seconds and committing to it is hard

“Sooo… what happened here..?” He glanced from the pile to the equipment with uneasiness

Satisfied with Carlos’s new hairdo, he decides to give Carlos some space, tail wagging against the floor as he sat down

He was glad to met the human, it’s hard to meet people when you live so deep in woods most of the time, and although they, or at least Drake, can’t understand each other, he hopes these small moments can convey what chips and tweets can not

A few of Carlos' friends - some of them scientists - laughed joyfully at the display, and Drake for his part received a couple pets from the more bold scientists. Usually a dangerous chance to take with a still-unknown species of animal, but it wasn't like he was a cat or anything.

Carlos chuckled and wiped his face with his sleeve. He reached down to also give Drake some pets in return for the affection.

"Happy New Year, buddy," he said with a smile. His skin was slowly starting to turn red where he was licked, but Carlos didn't seem to notice and just continued to grin down at the creature friend of theirs.

He was more then happy to to accept pets from the other scientists, after an appropriate amount of hand sniffs of course

When Carlos reached out he didn’t bother with the same formalities, instead stretching a wing out and pulling him in for a hug, letting out his rare low purr as he rubbed his head on Carlos’s shoulder

While pulling away he noticed the odd patch on side of Carlos’s face, carefully sniffing at it, did humans shed? Or did he get in a fight with something??
