Oooohhh, what about Whumper getting vivisected, and then being found by his former whumpee, who is so horrified by what's happened to whumper that they lose any ideas of revenge they ever had. Whumper is broken far worse than Former Whumpee ever was, and is so injured and sick he can barely move.

also my favorite is to vivisect immortals so they can take the worst of it and survive so that's fun

FW had once been a captive of Whumperee, tortured and humiliated for days on end until their team had found them and helped them escape

FW still had trauma from those days and their team tried to help them through it, but FW couldn't get rid of their anger and desire for revenge

FW spent months tracking down where whumperee could have gotten off to, and after a few years they find out that whumperee was with a team of scientists...for some reason

FW doesn't care about the reason, they just want to see whumperee, not to kill them, but just to punch them in the face a few times and tell them all the things they never got to while fearing for their life and screaming in pain

FW wants to tell whumperee how they feel, even years after the encounter, and even though they know whumperee won't care, they just want whumperee to know because they think they'll finally be able to get closure

seeing whumperee bleeding and begging would be a bonus, tho

FW tracks whumperee down to where they've been hiding, holed up with the scientists at their organization

the team waits outside while FW goes in. they have to do this alone

FW sees whumperee, and their blood boils, but they can't attack just yet since whumperee is surrounded by guards and scientists

FW sees them take whumperee into a lab and FW follows, hiding behind counters and boxes and whatever else, and decides to wait until all the scientists have cleared out

except they don't

they strap whumperee to a table, a slab of metal, really, and strap them in with leather restraints and FW notices for the first time how weak and drawn whumperee's face looks

their eyes are dead and blank and their skin is pale, their face is haggard

and then the scientists cut them open

FW has to hold their hand over their mouth to stifle their gasp as they watch the scientists gut whumperee right there, shoving their hands into whumperee's chest and breaking their ribs, then ripping out their heart

FW nearly gags at the sight of it all, the blood flowing freely over the metal and the glazed, terrified look in whumperee's eyes

FW completely forgets the reason they came here but they know they have to rescue whumperee. forget punching them in the face, this was worse than anything whumperee had ever done to FW and they needed to rescue them now

Trope: Plagued by Nightmares

A character has consistent nightmares, hinting at deeper issues.

whumpee has trauma from what they went through, consistently having nightmares about the event

whumpee has night terrors and thrashes around in their sleep

whumpee screams at night when they wake from their nightmares, causing them to be ashamed of sleeping around or within earshot of others because they don't want to disturb them

whumpee being kicked out of their apartment building for causing too much of a disturbance with their loud awakenings from the nightmares

whumpee refusing to sleep because they don't want to have nightmares

whumpee staying awake until they collapse so they will just black out and not dream

whumpee drinking themselves into a stupor so they'll black out and not dream

whumpee stumbling through the day, unable to think about anything

whumpee with dark bags under their heavy-lidded eyes

whumpee who avoids others because their patience is wearing thin with how little sleep they're getting

whumpee who's relationships with others fizzle out because whumpee is isolating themselves / pushing others away / lashing out from lack of sleep

whumpee being found sleeping in the oddest places, even in the middle of the day

Fever Comfort

Just some things a caregiver might do to make someone with a fever feel a little better. For when they’re a bit uncomfortable and has a loving caretaker around.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This is not medical advice, but please use these in your sickfics because I love reading about them.

🥶 If they’re cold and shivering:

Wrap a blanket around them. Maybe two!

Provide a hot water bottle or heated wheat pillow

Put the warmest, softest pair of woolly socks on their chilly feet

Tumble dry their pyjamas/dressing gown

Warm their icy hands between your own

Tuck them in nice and tight under the duvet

Wrap them up in several layers of clothing, especially if they’re outside or need to go outdoors for whatever reason

Classic: Use body heat to help warm them up, get under the covers with them

Put them in an armchair close to a fireplace

🥵 If they’re too hot:

Flip their pillow to the cool side

Open a window to let in fresh air

Put a fresh set of sheets on the bed

Provide a cold water bottle, or wheat pillow in the freezer

Help them into lighter clothing

We of course have the classic “washcloth to fevered forehead” but also consider these areas to wipe down or place a cool cloth on for comfort:

Closed eyelids

Cheeks

Side or back of the neck

Chest

Wrists / hands / arms

Ankles / feet / legs

Yeah basically the whole body

😣 If they’re in pain:

Close the curtains to help with their headache and/or help them sleep

Make sure they’re hydrated

Massage their achy muscles

Provide fever reducers / pain medication

Make them hot cups of tea to soothe their sore throat. Don’t forget the honey!

Gently stroking fingertips up and down their arms / legs / back in a soothing fashion (think ASMR light touch tracing)

Holding them close, perhaps gently rocking back and forth, helping them fall asleep to aid their recovery

Someone who's been physically pushing themselves way too hard and it's catching up to them. Not only are they sore and/or injured, but they're also definitely coming down with something. And for whatever reason, be it pride or having no say in the matter, they keep overexerting themselves and making everything worse

Freezing whumpees is great but what about when they finally start to warm up?

¤ when they didn't even realize how cold they were until that first touch of warmth and all of their muscles relax at once

¤ alternatively, when they didn't realize how cold they were, and with that first touch of warmth their muscles lock up and they start shivering violently

¤ fingers frozen stiff being run under lukewarm water, and even that mild warmth making them burn like fire

¤ externally their body temp is rising, but they still feel like a shard of ice is embedded in their center, unwilling to abate

¤ huddled under a mountain of blankets curled up tight but still shuddering so hard it aches

¤ knowing intellectually that the room, the fire, the blankets are warm, but feeling like they're not making the slightest dent on the ice at their center

"Do you even know what it's like to be under someone else's control?" - the whumpee asked in an empty voice, tired of the other's games.

Whumper barked out a laugh and grinned down at them, magic shining in their gaze. "I'm not the puppet, darling. I'm the puppeteer."

Whumpee merely blinked in boredom, and summoned their own power. The whumper's eyes turned gray and dull within an instant, their body drooping forward like a ragdoll hanging on strings.

The whumpee then began walking away, Whumper obediently and helplessly following after them.

"Then let me show you what it's like."

Prompt #65: Comfort without Touch

For Whumpee who are touch-averse

- Give them a warm blanket or jacket. 

- Make them a hot meal or bring them their favorite food. 

- Gift them something that reminds you of them. 

- Spend time together in the same space/ doing an activity together (reading, cooking, decorating, etc.) 

- Check in with them/ ask about their wellbeing. 

- Notice their body language and removing things that might hurt them/overwhelm them around them (turn down light, turn of sound systems, close window etc.) 

- Stand up to them against Whumper(s), even just verbally.

Is it just me, or is whump mostly geared towards live action media? Or am I just looking in the wrong places? I don't like live action stuff; it's just too much for me. I have more of a fondness for what I can find in animation, like the original Teen Titans, but I can't find anything curated towards that.

I know how you feel; I grew up with a lot more whump in cartoons than live action shows. Animated whump was my first love! For that, again I'd like to refer you to the Whumpapedia! It has a section for Animated TV that you can peruse for new shows that might interest you, or you can send in entries for cartoons you've watched and would recommend for whump 👍 Or you can also search the "animated whump" tag here on Tumblr if that's easier.

A Whumpee who was once a dancer, who Whumper keeps caged like a little bird. They are Whumper’s newest decoration, the centerpiece of their fixation, a shiny new toy made to spin again and again and again.

Every day, Whumpee rises to dance on bloodied and blistered feet, forcing their bruised and broken body to form beautiful shapes, a task they once cherished, but have learned to loathe.

Dance was once their greatest expression of self, but now, it is their only expression. Once their greatest source of life, dancing now feels like the very footsteps of death to them.

I shouldn’t be feeding into this, I shouldn’t, I shouldn’t, I shouldn’t…

But when they looked back again at the whumpee backed into the corner, waiting obediently for their judgement, it didn’t really matter.

“No, sweetheart, you’re not being bad. It was a good try, and I’m very proud of you,” they pause, gauging the way whumpee relaxed, “You’re being very good. And I think you deserve a treat. Come on, you can drop the cane, you don’t need to be punished.”

The whumpee dropped the cane they had been holding across their open palms, before realizing and quickly leaning it up against the wall instead.

Their eyes were dilated, looking almost completely black, as they followed caretaker into the kitchen.

Things aren’t going to get better if you keep feeding into this…

They gave whumpee a cookie and leaned against the counter, thinking.

They watched as whumpee nibbled at it, seeming to try to make it last as long as possible. So they handed them another one.

The way their whole face lit up made caretaker smile even through the guilt.

“You know… you’re so good all the time, I’ve been thinking. I need new ideas on what rewards to give. I know you like these cookies, but even if you were bad, you would still get food, cookies included, so it doesn’t feel too special…”

They chose their words carefully, hoping that whumpee understood the inherent promise underneath.

“Are there things that you’d like?”

“You’re very kind, thank you, thank you, I am not deserving of any of this…” Whumpee clearly is also watching their words, wary of a trap.

“But, if you could pick anything, for a very special reward, what would it be?” they pressed, “There’s no wrong answer, and you won’t be in trouble for anything you say.”

They looked down at the floor, thinking. To caretakers shock, when they looked up, there were tears in their eyes.

“Maybe… a hug?” their voice cracked and they turned away, “I’m sorry, forgive me, I’m sorry…”

“Oh- Oh honey, oh sweetheart, come here…”

Whumpee allowed themselves to be folded into a hug, and caretaker could feel their shoulders shaking as more tears fell.

“It doesn’t have to be a special reward, it doesn’t have to be anything… If you want a hug you can always have a hug from me okay?”

They let out another rough sob, hugging back, and for a moment they both just held their, letting whumpee catch their breath.

Slowly, tension started to melt away, till whumpee had basically wilted against caretaker, head resting on their shoulder.

They stayed that way for almost ten minutes, and the more time passed, the slower and deeper whumpees breathing got, until caretaker realized that they had dozed off on their shoulder.

A couple tears of their own fell, and though they had stopped believing in a god a long time ago, in this moment they sent up a quiet prayer.
