"Come on, you used to be a lot more fit than this." He glanced back at her, grinning as he stepped off the familiar trail. It had been years since they'd gone looking for trouble together, but having her beside him made it feel like no time had passed at all. "We're almost there. Probably."

Danny caught her around the waist, pulling her back before she could tumble down the hill. Once he knew she was steady, his panic gave way to a laugh.

"Plenty fit, huh?" he teased, keeping an arm around her for a moment longer. "Looks like you've gone soft."

She felt soft, too, something he became far too aware of with her pressed against him. His laughter faded slightly before he loosened his hold and stepped around her, beginning the trek down the hill.

"This way, Dora the Explorer."

Emma's cheeks turned pink and she quickly found her footing, grateful he had already stepped around her before he could notice. "I did that on purpose," she insisted, glaring at his back. "You got that backwards, you're dora."

Before he could get too far, she rushed forward and jumped onto his back, looping her arms around his shoulders. "Since I've gone soft, I'll be backpack."

Danny caught her by the backs of her thighs when she jumped on, staggering only a little before finding his balance. "Jesus, Em," he laughed, shaking his head as he started down the hill. "Guess I should've known you were looking for a free ride."

He carried her farther between the trees, deeper into the forest, and after a few minutes, he slowed and glanced around with an exaggerated frown.

"Okay, don't panic," he said, trying not to smile. "But I think we might be lost."

Emma watched him disappear between the trees, narrowing her eyes when she caught the grin he was trying, and failing, to hide.

"Sure, Danny. I'm the one who can't be trusted."

She folded her arms, waiting a few seconds before calling after him. "You know I can still hear you, right?"

When he didn't answer, she glanced around at the unfamiliar woods, her confidence slipping just enough to make her hesitate. He was obviously playing, but that didn't make her feel any better about being left behind.

"Don't take too long, Reed," she called, turning to face the direction he'd gone, realizing she was sure how she was getting back.

Danny didn't answer, letting the silence do the work for him. He stayed low behind the trees, watching Emma from a distance as she waited for him to reappear. Every time she glanced toward the path, he held still; every time she looked away, he moved.

Keeping low, he circled wide around the clearing, using the trees to conceal his route until he was behind her again. Only once he was certain she hadn't noticed did he pull the wolf mask over his face, adjusting it as he crept closer.

He stopped a few feet behind her, holding back a laugh as he leaned forward slightly. Then he let out a low gravelly growl from his throat.
