Another day begins and I am plagued with the stereotypical Host fic I nevertheless feel the urge to write, the story of Kyle and Sunny’s week long road trip to the caves

there's nothing quite like a random piece of media you consumed ages ago and loved at the time but kinda forgot about after coming back to you years later absolutely out of nowhere like "you thought you could forget about me? don't worry! i'm here to be the only thing you care about yet again" and then the cycle repeats

it's fun but also painful because the intensity of the obsession revived makes it hard to focus on anything else like someone get these fictional people out of my head please

Every now and then I re-read Stephenie Meyer's The Host and remember why it's one of my favorite books, only now I write fanfic soooo I wrote up a lil oneshot 🎉

Needed an angst fix so I wrote a re-telling of Chapter 14 (and what happens before Wanderer wakes up in Chapter 15) from Jared’s POV. For reference, Chapter 14 is where Wanderer/Melanie are brought in by Jeb and see Jared for the first time. Starts with a flashback of when Melanie went off to find her cousin.

Mel: In my defense, you didn't hear what he said.

Wanda: What did he say?

Mel: "What are you going to do? Stab me?"

Jared: I'm with Mel on this. That's practically an invitation.

Hey did Melanie say at some point that the reason she slipped up, the reason she and Wanda dreamed about the night Mel met Jared- when she was getting food for Jamie- was because it had just been Jamie's birthday irl, so Mel was thinking about him? (Of course, if you're thinking of Jamie, why are you dreaming of Jared? Was it Jared's birthday? If so, ingore post)

If so I think I found a continuity error.

In the memory, Mel complains about how hot it is, even for being dark out, and it only gets that hot in like, June/July in Arizona,

But then, in another flash back, that takes place a month after the first (from chapter 8), so either July or August, she says he's "nine, almost ten"

In the chapter where she has the dream, chapter 4, Wanderer ends it by says she'd "need to visit her comforter tomorrow" and chapter 5 and 6 take place that next day, and the beginning of 6 says it's March,

That would be spring.

Like, 7-8 months after that time period when Mel said it was almost his birthday. Like, july/August is 4-5 after March, I'd more say Jamie just turned 9 before I said he's almost 10.

She was of course, also a 17 year old teenager trying to sleep with Jared, so I COULD imagine her just saying that to convince him it was fine if Jamie slept on the couch/cot without her, so maybe not a continuity error after all 🤔
