i got a few asks about the next phase of the expansion process & have seen alot of questions floating about so i thought i would attempt to explain it :) sorry for the long post in advance!
buckle in guys bc alot will be happening in the expansion process over next few weeks!! phase 2 will take place june 5-8!!
to recap phase 1: each existing team protects 3 players that will stay on their roster. the players that are protected are:
toronto sceptres: raygan kirk, renata fast & ella shelton
montreal victoire: marie philip poulin, laura stacey & ann renee desbiens
vancouver goldeneyes: sarah nurse, sophie jaques & emerance maschmeyer
new york sirens: sarah fillier, casey o'brien & kristyna kaltounkova
boston fleet: megan keller, aerin frankel & haley winn
seattle torrent: alex carpenter, hannah murphy & anna wilgren
minnesota frost: taylor heise, kelley panneck & maddie rooney
now onto phase 2, this is where things get a little more complicated! the foundation of expansion rosters will take place, by the end of this phase each expansion team will have 5 players! 1 player for each team will recieve a "expansion franchise offer" (efo) while the remaining 4 will have "foundational player offers" (fpo).
more about the 2 different types of offers:
1. expansion franchise offer (efo): this offer will be given to 1 star player per expansion team & cannot be refused. player will see salary increase with a 100k minimum. the player can decide to sign for 1-4 years. a player who signs a multi-year contract will get 20k upfront. the player MUST SIGN.
2. foundational player offers (fpo): this offer will be given to up to 4 players per expansion team. players do not have to sign. can sign multi-year deals with a minimum of 2 years. salaries will be minimum 80k for year 1 & 82.5k for year 2.
what if a team cannot get 4 fpo's to sign? expansions will submit a 20 player "exclusive negotiation target list" (entl). expansion teams can select any unprotected players from their entl to sign, even ones with current contracts which means the team will get the player's playing rights.
After learning that Shoma is going back to competition because he's struggling to make a living after retirement, I can't help but be even more impressed with Yuzuru's pro career.
It is true that Yuzuru is the most important figure skater of all time and he had a huge fan base as a competitor, but even he was scared of what the future would bring for him after he retired. Life is not the same for athletes once they stop competing. But the guy kept going, training as hard as before, even more conscious now about his own body and abilities. And he literally reinvented ice skating. Nobody is doing what he does. And nobody will. He's unique. Once he disappears, no one will be able to replace him. For a sport that is actually very niche, he manages to create something that different types of people want to see.
Regular ice shows are good for retired skaters, but no summer ice show is going to sell what any Yuzuru show sells. Yuzuru himself is a whole brand that he built with dedication and love, and he's not taking it for granted. He's working every single day to get better, if that's even possible.
I guess I just needed an excuse to gush about him 😆
