Maybe youâre like Old Me and you suck at editing/revising so when youâre trying to fix your novel after the 2nd read through you panic and think âI HAVE TO REWRITE EVERYTHINGâ and after crying for a long time you give up and rewrite everything. You do this approximately a...

Real People vs. Characters
As a writer, one of your main jobs is to get your readers to believe in the illusion youâre creating in your story. Deep down, we know that characters arenât real people, but we suspend our disbelief to really put ourselves inside a fictional world. While characters can also be layered and complex, thereâs a big differenceâtheyâre not real people.
Here are a few differences to consider when building your own characters:
Characters are simpler than real people
I know, I know. How can I say that your favorite character from your favorite book series isnât as complex as your next door neighbor? You know a lot more about your favorite character because youâve followed their ups and downs for like 5 books now.
But the truth is your next door neighbor has a very real and very complex life and theyâll always have more depth than any character in a fiction novel. Authors only tend to focus on certain traits of a character; ones that pertain to the story and help drive the novel forward. Adding a lot more detail could bog the story down and feel unnecessary. Like I said before, characters can be complex and layered, but weâre only experiencing a powerful illusion. This is actually helpful for writers because it helps manipulate your readersâ emotions depending on what story youâre trying to tell. You get to guide your characters and where theyâre going.
Youâre only sharing a slice of life
Most of the time when youâre writing about a character, youâre only sharing the most dramatic moments of their existence. Thereâs a reason youâre telling the story and itâs not just them living their normal day-to-day lives. Thereâs usually the stasis that moves on to the inciting incident that gets them away from what theyâre used to. We all know that real life can be tedious and boring for the most part. Iâm not saying nothing exciting happens to real people, but we do work and go to school and sleep every nightâŠthe boring parts are usually cut out of fiction (depending on your story)
Again, obviously this all depends on your story, but thereâs usually some excitement that pops up in stories that doesnât always happen to real people. We are reading about whatâs most representative of your characterâs life.
You never know exactly what real people are thinking
This is one of the biggest differences between characters and real people. In novels, if the writer chooses to do so, the innermost thoughts of characters can be revealed. In real life, itâs impossible for us to know what someone else is thinking. They might tell us, but weâll never have that sort of deep insight weâd have in a work of fiction.
Use this to your advantage as a writer because it doesnât happen in real life. Â Share your protagonistâs thoughts if you think it will help develop your story.
-Kris Noel
People think they know you. They think they know how youâre handling a situation. But the truth is no one knows. No one knows what happens after you leave them, when youâre lying in bed or sitting over your breakfast alone and all you want to do is cry or scream. They donât know whatâs going on inside your headâthe mind-numbing cocktail of anger and sadness and guilt. This isnât their fault. They just donât know. And so they pretend and they say youâre doing great when youâre really not. And this makes everyone feel better. Everybody but you.â

the funniest and best thing iâve learned while doing research for this shakespeare project is that in the late 19th century, there was this group called the american acclimatization society and their thing was bringing european plants and animals to the u.s. so one member was this guy named eugene schieffelin and he was like obsessed with shakespeare, so he went, âhey, wouldnât it be cool if we tracked down EVERY SPECIES OF BIRD SHAKESPEARE EVER MENTIONED and brought them ALL to Americaâ so he rounded up like a hundred European starlings and released them in central park, and now there are upwards of 200 million starlings in North America and they cause around $1 billion worth of damage to crops every year, all because shakespeare mentioned them exactly ONCE in Henry IV part 1
#the shakespeare fandom is wild
It simply isnât an adventure worth telling if there arenât any dragons.

forms of transphobia you should watch out for in your speech and thought processes
casual cissexism:Â associating genitalia/body parts with gender, statements like âgod iâm such a lesbian i love vaginasâ and âguys donât understand periods at allâ or anything that implies people with vaginas and breasts = female and people with penises = male
nonbinary erasure:Â phrases like âopposite genderâ, statements that imply male and female are the only genders
intersex erasure:Â phrases like âopposite sexâ, statements that imply there are only two sexes and that everyone is born with strictly a vagina or penis
assuming gender based on appearance:Â if you donât know someoneâs gender, donât assume they are female and donât refer to them as âsheâ just because they appear dfab or femme. donât use gendered terms to refer to someone whose gender you do not know.
but can we please also remember that when people make these mistakes they are- more often than not- unintentional and the way you should react is to try to educate them not to rip them to shreds just remember that everyone makes mistakes and some people were raised in such a way that these things arenât things they actively think about and they WILL need time to work on this so help them education before evisceration everyone!!!!!
This times a million. I make mistakes but I want to learn, not be terrorized until I no longer want anything to do with these issues.
I will be wild. I will be brutal. I will encircle you and conquer you. I will be more powerful than your boats and your swords and your blood lust. I will be inevitable.
