Ilia truly didn’t know what she’d do without Blake, what she would have done if things had gone differently back on Menagerie. She preferred not to think about it, nothing good would come of dwelling on that now.

“Because of you, I’m here drinking with the most amazing person on Remnant after a long stretch of recruiting for a new and improved organization for Faunus rights, and we’re going to go to a beautiful cove and enjoy a night at the beach alone. You could not describe to me a more perfect evening, and it wouldn’t be possible without you.”

“Alright, that’s enough. You’re gonna make me blush.” Blake waved her hand, signaling the bartender for the check. “You are every bit as pivotal in all of this as I am. That’s part of the beauty of this. Neither one of us is more important than the other when it comes to our loyalties to one another.” She explained to the other woman, reaching out and covering a hand with her own atop the bar. “You should thank yourself for some of it. You had the courage and heart to change your ways when you really didn’t have to. That resolve is what got you here, today.” 

Moving to pay the tab, Blake slid off her seat and reached out a hand to the other, a fond smile tipping the corners of her lips, “Come on, let’s get out of here. There’s a beach with warm sand and salty water calling our names.”

“Oooh yes, let’s go!” Ilia said happily, blushing a bit herself at Blake’s compliments. Following Blake out, Ilia decided to press her luck and wrap her arms around one of Blake’s as they walked.

“So tell me about this beach. Hard to think of you spending your precious free time to find a place as good as you’ve described.” A bit of teasing, emboldened by the alcohol.

Taking the other woman by the wrist, she pulled her into the nearest food stall that sold alcohol, dragging her to sit beside her at the worn bar top. “Two dressed tequila shots, please.” She nodded to the bartender, before sliding a few lien across the wooden surface.

Turning back to Ilia, she rested her chin on an upturned palm, releasing a tired sigh, “We just got back from a successful round of recruitment. Also we’re adults. We don’t need an occasion to have a drink.” The truth was, Ilia had been moping around a bit since her injury, and Blake was hoping to get her back to her old self. If alcohol was the only way, then that was what it would take. “Don’t worry. I don’t plan on getting drunk. Only one for me this time. I just wanna relax.”

“Oh come on, I’m not that much of a lightweight.” Ilia protested with a laugh, but didn’t push it. No, she wanted to have at least a somewhat clear head around Blake, lest she truly embarrass herself.

“Alright, lead the way. Just know that I’m probably going to be starving later, booze always makes me hungry.” She beamed up at Blake. Tonight, she decided, was going to just be fun. No regrets, no doubting, just pure unadulterated enjoyment with her favorite person in the world.

“Hey, Blake? Thank you... For everything.”

“If there’s anyone there at all, I’d be very surprised. Especially this late in the evening.” Blake assured, observing the other kick back her second shot. “Believe me. I could use a reprieve from all the interviews and candidate screenings, myself.”

Ilia’s gratitude caught her off-guard, and she tilted her head a bit in askance. “Everything? What do you mean? You’re the one who stuck by me during this crazy, stressful time! You could have gone back to Menagerie with the others…but you stayed here with me. I should be the one thanking you.”

“Well I certainly won’t argue. It’s been a hell of a few weeks.” Ilia gave her a smile, excited to be able to actually relax and have fun with Blake for a change. Things had been… Difficult for a bit, especially after her injury. But seeing Blake make this much of an effort lifted her spirits.

“So, what should we drink to?” She asked, picking up the shot glass that was slid in front of her.

“Hmm...we can drink to our success...or to the weekend.” Blake pondered aloud, as she lifted and twirled her shot glass in consideration. “Actually,” Her eyes lit up a bit as an idea came to her, “We don’t need a reason, but let’s toast to the fact that we’re both here, with our adorable girlfriend, in a city by the sea, and summer is almost here.” Clinking her glass with Ilia’s, Blake licked the salt and downed the shot in one go. “Ugh, that stuff is cheap...but it gets the job done.” Chasing it with a wedge of lime, Blake glanced over at the other. “You know what we should do? We should go to the beach after this. We haven’t been down there in awhile, and I know of this little cove that’s always empty at night. I’m dying for a swim.”

“Now that I will definitely drink to.” Ilia downed her shot and grimaced. She was always more of a whiskey girl, but tequilla wasn’t so bad with a lime chaser.

“Oooh, a late night swim sounds perfect! Fuck it, we’ve earned it!” She was beaming at the prospect, and asked for another shot. Tonight, she was going to just let loose for once. No holding back, no anxieties. She was going to spend some time with Blake, with not a single worry.

“Yeah, sleep… That’ll be good…” She was starting to get groggy again, the adrenaline from the pain fading fast. 

“I’m really sorry Blake… For the food, for this, for always being down on myself. I’ll be better.” Her words were starting to slur a bit as she laid down on the bed. She gently set down on her good side and started to slowly pull a blanket up. “I’ll try not to get blood on everything”

“It’s fine if you do. I can get bloodstains out of just about anything…” Blake murmured, scooting the other over as she laid down in front of her. Tugging the blanket back over both of them, she squirmed backwards gently, until she felt the warmth of Ilia’s legs against her own, careful not to jostle the bed with her movements. “Looks like you get to be the big spoon tonight. You’re lucky I like you.” She would call the restaurant in the morning. She knew the owner so she doubted it would be any trouble at all to get the situation sorted out. “Get some rest. We can talk more in the morning.”

“Okay... Good night...” She draped an arm around Blake and began drifting off, taking some comfort in holding her. It was the one good thing to come out of this, it seemed.
