Last Chance {Eric}

“Well, I guess that’s true.” She hummed, shrugging her shoulders. She blushed when he mentioned taking her up on her offer. “I don’t sleep much, either. I usually get the ideas for new recipes at night so I’m usually half sleeping and half baking at night.” She mentioned. “Yeah, no. Don’t worry about it. You’re busy.” She played with her coffee cup for a second. “Well, I should let you get back to work. Don’t want to be the reason you miss your deadline.”

“He’s many things and a cheapskate is definitely one of them.” Eric grinned, it had its upsides though. For example: they had a pretty good deal on most of their bills, and there was about a month’s worth of prepared meals in the freezer. However sometimes Eric’s roommate’s money-saving habits drove him insane. “When do you sleep?” She always seemed so bright and busy, he had to wonder how she managed it sometimes. “I’ll call you tomorrow once its done?” He suggested, setting down his cup on the desk.

Isabelle frowned at Lachlan’s accusation. Surely she would have told him? Right? Granted she had been busy lately… They both were so busy. “I did call!” Isabelle insisted. She had her phone history to prove it. Scoffing the blonde rolled her eyes before looking down, a sad expression finding itself onto her face. “Why didn’t you call me?” She challenged. “You’re standing here throwing accusations at me, this isn’t just one sided Lachlan.” She pointed out with a sad sigh. “I wanted to come back and be with you…but you clearly don’t want that.” With her shoulders slumping she wondered what the point was. “You obviously don’t want me.” 

“I don’t know who you were calling but it wasn’t me.” Lachlan countered, eyes darkening as she spoke, the last three calls he’d received had been from someone trying to sell him life-insurance. “Honestly I just assumed you were off with someone else... why the hell would I call you?” He said angrily, still leaning against the doorframe. “I’m not the one who packed a bag an disappeared, this is one-sided. I thought you’d left and didn’t have the good grace to say goodbye.” Over the past few weeks, he’d been constantly trying to figure out what he’d done wrong, it hadn’t occurred to him that she’d just gone on a shoot. “I don’t know if I can, not if this is going to keep happening.”

“ I got one of those things down then.” Oscar blushed a bit and laughed.” I do make my own jam and it’s freaking great let me tell you.” He frowned when Eric can’t denying to nap. “ Are we sure you’re a grown man? Come on just 20 minutes. Lay down and take a nap or I’ll keep bugging you until you cant with me anymore. So take a nap.”

“What. You sad little house-man.” Eric scoffed, almost choking on his burst of laughter. “According to my taxes, rent, and other bills... yeah I’m a grown man.” He groaned the, sinking deeper into the couch. “I am not about to sleep on your couch, so be a good friend and drop it?  Maybe offer me another coffee.” The man said with a small smirk, holding out the now empty cup.

“Aw, you’re no fun.” Refusing to be discouraged by the comment, Palmer rummaged for the file, digging through the glove compartment until he fished it out. He scanned it. “Ashton’s the right name,” he reported back, getting himself comfortable to read it over.

“Photon lasers, huh? I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one of those babies.” He was reassured by Eric’s listing of their supplies - even he wasn’t out of it enough to wander around the desert without a water supply. He read the file for a few momets before looking up. “Where are we gonna find this teacher for you to interview, anyway?”

“I’m not being paid to have fun.” Eric pointed out, taking a few long gulps from his water bottle. Even with the air-con on full (though in his beat up old car it wasn’t up to much), he was already beginning to feel the desert heat. “Good, I’d be in shit if I mixed up clients again... the children’s book and the self-help medical guide was lesson enough.” 

“They don’t exist.” Eric sighed, “Outside of sci-fi at least... you need to get your head out of the clouds or space dust or whatever...” Focusing on the road, the man never turned his head for more than a second or two. “Just outside of Vegas, little residential town.”

Handed in my second to last essay yesterday so am taking this morning/tonight away from working (going to get some dissertation done this afternoon though). The plan is to catch up on drafts/bios but like this and I'll also write a starter based on your wishlist :)

“ Ha ha ha very funny. “ Oscar smiled.” I can’t help but be a concerned mother goose., it’s in my blood now. Still you should sleep and you know that I will keep bugging you about it until you actually take a nap so yeah. “

“Its a good look on you, next you’ll be reading Mrs Beeton and making your own jam.” Eric said, a grin stretching across his face at the thought. “I’m not going to nap Oscar, I’m a grown man... only toddlers and college kids take naps.”

“ You should sleep. “ Oscar insisted as he sat down next to Eric..” If you want you can crash on the couch for a few minutes. I’ll wake you up later…. It will help you with your work too.”

“I will, soon.” Eric promised him, though even Eric wasn’t sure when. “Honestly, you fuss too much, is this what fatherhood does?” He joked, taking a long draught of his coffee. “Its just a stupid YA novel, they won’t notice if there’s a misplaced colon here and there... honestly I’m fine.”

“Eric…” Alice sighed, looking down to hide the guilty look on her face. She was easily readable, an open book, and it took every ounce of her strength to hide the truth–she had been happy. Of course she’d been happy, but she’d gotten into the relationship knowing it could never last. Not with her father in control of her life. Not with her secrets.

“I’m sorry. I am.” Alice moved to him, perched on the arm of the chair. For a moment, she hesitated, staring down at his hand, before taking it in both of her own. She gave it a gentle squeeze. “I wish I could make this easier.”

He snatched his hand back as though her touch was fire. Practically leaping from the chair. “No.” He said flatly, there was no anger, no malice in his voice: only hurt and betrayal. “No. You can’t do that. You can’t just break it off and then treat me all sugar and sweetness. It doesn’t work like that Alice.” Eric wanted to sound strong, as though he was in control of his thoughts and feelings. 

But in honesty, he just wanted her gone so he could break down. He didn’t want her to see how much this had hurt. “I think you should leave.” He told her, voice cracking a little.

“Mhm, sure.” She smirked. “You should tell him to come see me at the bakery. I would give him a discount.” She shrugged her shoulders and took another sip of her coffee, setting it down. “Well, I wouldn’t mind if you showed up to my house. You can come by anytime.” She grinned. “Well if it’s going to be fun for you maybe I should help.” A giggled escaped her lips and hummed. Her smile faded when he told her no. “No, yeah. That’s fine. Another time, for sure.”

“Why would he do that when he can just steal them from me for free?” Eric pointed out, absent-mindedly drumming his fingers against his leg. The man rarely kept his hands still, the were always turning and fiddling with things. “I might take you up on that sometime... though you should probably not say that to a night owl.” He grinned, taking another sip of the coffee she’d brought him. “Sorry, any other time and you know I would’ve jumped at the chance.”

“I told you I was off on a shoot…I told you weeks ago. You never listen.” Isabelle stood there and frowned as he cut off her only exit. “What do you want from me? You know how much my work means to me..” Looking down she shook her head. “I expected a warm welcome not..this..” 

“Maybe I didn’t listen because you didn’t tell me?” He said, raising an eyebrow. She might have been right, exams were coming up at the school and Lachlan had been working himself to the bone... it wasn’t unfeasible that he hadn’t been playing attention to her much over the past few weeks and months. But, he wasn’t about to admit to her that he might be wrong. “You could’ve called, or sent a text... it would have taken you what? Two minutes... you can’t have been so busy that you couldn’t spare two minutes.”

“ I am a single dad after all so I try to not have said vices around me. Sometimes I have beer but that’s all out.” Oscar walked to the the kitchen before coming back with a cup of coffee.” Here you go… Man how long have you been up? You look like you haven’t slept in days.”

“Well, I’d say you’re missing out... but actually its kind of admirable. Good for you.” Eric said with a slight shrug, “Thanks.” He added, taking the coffee. “Uh, couple of days maybe? I passed out at my desk for about twenty minutes last night I think... so I’m good. Deadline’s coming up, I’ll sleep when its done.”

“ shit, I’m late for work ”

“ ugh, not you again ”

“ did I lose a bet last night? ”

“ I can’t believe I just did that ”

“ you cannot tell anyone about this ”

“ where did you learn to do that? ”

“ well this will be an exciting diary entry ”

“ why are we outside? ”

“ I’m sorry I broke your bed ”

“ so… breakfast? ”

“ I think I need to shower for a year ”

“ we have to stop doing this ”

“ I really hope I’m/you’re not pregnant ”

“ I didn’t know you had a tattoo ”

“ wanna go again? ”

“ I ache all over ”

“ you might be the best I’ve ever had ”

“ that wasn’t what I planned ”

“ why is there glitter everywhere? ”

“ karaoke isn’t usually such a turn on for me ”

“ that was better than last time ”

“ does this mean we’re dating? ”

“ I’m so hungover ”

“ what did you say your name was? ”

“ I need a cigarette ”

“ are you sure that was alright? ”

“ I don’t cuddle ”

“What?” Isabelle demanded, not sure how she should respond entirely. “No.” She stated. “I can, and I will. You’re just being unfair.” She defended herself. 

Folding his arms over his chest, Lachlan leaned against the door-frame: blocking her access. “I haven’t heard from you in days and you just turn up as though nothing happened? I’m tired of this Isabelle...”

Shock to the System {Eric}

“Do you think I’m alright?” Eric asked, sitting in his favourite chair with a dazed expression on his face. “I didn’t expect you to dump me, I thought we were going out to dinner for a date... not so you could end the relationship.” He wasn’t sure how to process the sudden waves of conflicting emotion, so he just sat there: dazed and shocked, as though they had literally knocked the air out of him. “Why didn’t you tell me you weren’t happy? I was happy.”

Wren sat down in a spare chair in his office, taking a sip of his coffee. “You’re welcome. Figured you needed a pick me up.” She took a bite of her danish and hummed. “I’m starting to think you hate my baking.” She teased, a smirk on her lips as she set the bitten danish down. She took another sip and looked around his office. “Now, that’s sounds like it’d be helpful for me, not for you.” She grinned. “Do you think you’ll be working all night? Maybe I could take you to a movie. Maybe getting your mind off of it for a while would help.”

“Of course not, I love it... I’m just not hungry.” He assured her, “Besides, you know what my roommate would be like if he smelled your baking and then found out I didn’t save him some.” Eric pointed out, “He’d have me drive to your bakery just to pick up more, or if he doesn’t get back ‘till late we’d probably be showing up at your house.” Taking a sip of his coffee before popping off the lid, the man poured it into his usual ‘work mug’ and neatly tossed the empty cup towards the mountain of trash that was beginning to swallow up the bin. “Maybe, but it would be fun for me... I don’t think I’ve ever seen you be mean about anything or anyone yet.” Grinning, Eric set his mug down and swivelled his chair to face Wren. “Probably, the deadline is tomorrow at noon... raincheck?”

I have a handful of drafts still to do, and I’ll be working on those during my essay breaks... taking a break from writing to write some more... but like this post (or reblog or message me, whatever works for you) and I’ll write up a starter based on your wishlist with a random muse.
