just start. do a single math problem out of the 20 you have. one page of reading and youre done. try to just place one item where it belongs. research that one thing you need for your paper. go over a powerpoint slide for that lecture youre confused in.
i promise you doing one single action feels better than doing nothing at all. take 5 minutes to do just one small task thats been staying in the back of your head.

we all write essays that need sources like 5 seconds before itās due so here is my #1 tip that i havenāt been called out for yet in my 3 years of collegeĀ
writing a paper on alexander the great but couldnāt be bothered to look at more than the wikipedia page? WELLĀ
GO to the wikipedia page and find a fact that youād like to incorporateā¦
coooool honor and glory so Manly⢠ANYWAYSĀ
see that little circled 169? click it and itāll take you HERE:Ā
so with this one youāll get not one, but two sources. that GIVE YOU PAGE NUMBERS. mla in-text citations? done. just paraphrase the fact, and addĀ āā¦ā(Green 5).Ā
but we need the full thing, donāt we? go here by clicking on the hyperlink -
and thatās all the info you need! now google to find the exact book and more up-to-date accurate info you need for your works cited and, maybe, find a pdf online or a copy in your library.Ā
BUT THATāS NOT ALL. for this example it doesnāt work, because the page this specific fact is on is not available in the way iām gonna show you, but oh well.Ā
you couldāve clicked onĀ āRoisman and Worthington 2010, p. 190,ā whichāll take you here:Ā
scroll down aaaaaandĀ
see those blue links? those are available chapters of the book! for free! right at your fingertips! no need to get up and run to your library, or stress out that you canāt find the book online. google books has TONS of resources.
at the bottom of a wikipedia article, the sources are categorized into primary and secondary sources as well, in case you need to fill a specific source type requirement.Ā
you can do this with anything. iāve done it with audrey hepburn (my school library had no books/articles of use), world war ii, the hebrews in the old testamentā¦literally, anything. as a disclaimer, this probs isnāt 100% foolproof, but none of my professors have caught on. and in a pinch, it works better than scanning an entire book or article for a fact you need. Ā
Reblogging for the schoolers
This is the right way to use wikipedia. It, itself, is not a source for academic essays but a collection of other sources condensed so someone can quickly get better information about a subject without reading dozens of individual things.

Do yourself a favor. Learn to code. Here's how.
Iāve said this to my non-techie friends countless times. Itās no secret that being able to code makes you a better job applicant, and a better entrepreneur.Ā Hell, one techie taught a homeless man to code and now that man is making his first mobile application.
Learning to code elevates your professional life, and makes you more knowledgeable about the massive changes taking place in the technology sector that are poised to have an immense influence on human life.
(note: yes I realize that 3/5 of those links were Google projects)
But most folks are intimidated by coding. And it does seem intimidating at first. But peel away the obscurity and the difficulty, and you start to learn that coding, at least at its basic level, is a very manageable, learnable skill.
There areĀ a lot of resources out there to teach you. Iāve found a couple to be particularly successful. Hereās my list of resources for learning to code, sorted by difficulty:
Novice
Never written a line of code before? No worries. Just visit one of these fine resources and follow their high-level tutorials. You wonāt get into the nitty-gritty, but donāt worry about it for now:
Dash - by General Assembly
CodeAcademy
w3 Tutorials (start at HTML on the left sidebar and work your way down)
Intermediate
Now that youāve gone through a handful of basic tutorials, itās time to learn the fundamentals of actual, real-life coding problems. Iāve found these resources to be solid:
Khan Academy
CodeAcademy - Ruby, Python, PHP
Difficult
If youāre here, youāre capable of building things. You know the primitives. You know the logic control statements. Youāre ready to start making real stuff take shape. Here are some different types of resources to turn you from someone who knows how to code, into a full-fledged programmer.
Programming problems
Sometimes, the challenges in programming arenāt how to make a language do a task, but just how to do the task in general. Like how to find an item in a very large, sorted list, without checking each element. Here are some resources for those types of problems
Talentbuddy
TopCoder
Web Applications
If you learned Python, Django is an amazing platform for creating quick-and-easy web applications. Iād highly suggest the tutorial - itās one of the best Iāve ever used, and you have a web app up and running in less than an hour.
Django Tutorial
Iāve never used Rails, but itās a very popular and powerful framework for creating web applications using Ruby. Iād suggest going through their guide to start getting down-and-dirty with Rails development.
Rails Guide
If you know PHP, thereās an ocean of good stuff out there for you to learn how to make a full-fledged web application. Frameworks do a lot of work for you, and provide quick and easy guides to get up and running. Iād suggest the following:
Cake PHP Book
Symfony 2 - Get Started
Yii PHP - The Comprehensive Guide
Conclusion
If thereās one point I wanted to get across, itās thatĀ it is easier than ever to learn to code. There are resources on every corner of the internet for potential programmers, and the benefits of learning even just the basics are monumental.
If you know of any additional, great resources that arenāt listed here, please feel free to tweet them to me @boomeyer.
Best of luck!
Iād also like to add some more specialized resources!

Misc. resources:
Stack Overflow is an ask-and-answer community for programmers. Itās amazing and will save your life. Sign up and donāt be afraid to ask for help.
Github offers a student pack (here) if you create an account and prove youāre a student. This gives you free access to a bunch of great programming resources for free for a certain period of time, such as Unreal Engine. Also, Github in general is a site that you can host your code on. Other users can see it, and āforkā it to make a copy of your code and modify it.
Parse is a backend service that allows you to store data in databases it hosts on its own servers. It lets you use push notifications, create users, store and retrieve data, etc. Itās compatible with iOS apps, Android apps, Windows apps, Xamarin, React, Unity, OS X, Windows, JavaScript, PHP, .net, Arduino, and Embedded C. Itās free up to a certain limit that depends on the services you use.
Cloud9, Codebox, and SquadĀ are online IDEs that allow for real-time collaboration and support a variety of languages, so theyāre useful for team projects.
And some general advice:
Your program will not work right away, 99% of the time. Thatās okay. Do your best to figure out where the error is. Here is some advice on debugging (written for PHP but the methods can be generalized).
If youāre stuck, Google. Google like thereās no tomorrow.
Ask questions on a community like Stack Overflow.
For that matter, browse relevant Stack Overflow questions. You can probably find some solutions there.
Donāt be afraid to copy and paste.
Take breaks sometimes if youāre getting burned out. But donāt stay away from your projects for too long or youāll lose track of its status.
Backup your code. On the cloud, on a USB drive, wherever. If your IDE has a backing up feature like snapshots, use it whenever you hit a milestone.
If your project is big, split it up into milestones and set goals. Donāt tackle everything at once.
Like the OP said, coding isnāt just for professionals andĀ āgeeksā anymore. Anyone can learn it if you really try, and with the rapidly expanding tech industry, learning coding can really broaden your opportunities.
If any of the links are broken, or you have a question or some information/resources to add, you can contact me through the askbox or the OP through his Twitter (as mentioned in his post).
If youāre interested, try some of these out and best of luck!
Great work expanding on my humble list to include a much fuller collection of resources for learning how to code! Cheers!
@veronicasantangelos You might want this at some stage when you finally start Uni!
Just to add to this;
1, Set yourself up an account on jsfiddle.net and you get yourself an awesome, easy to use sandpit for trying out JS/JQuery/JS framework stuff. YOU DONāT NEED TO INSTALL ANYTHING (woo!). Itās free.Ā
Just remember if starting a fiddle from scratch, youāre usually gonna be coding with JQuery, so you gotta set JQuery as your framework:
2, Got a light/medium understanding of JS? Next step: learn AngularJS. Seriously, itāll blow your mind. Just remember to select it as a framework in JSFiddle:
for the record, codeacademy is good with basic syntax but doesnt teach you much of the why/how of whatās going on. But if you want to learn python for instance, there are several free classes (all you have to do is get an account, but it doesnt cost anything) at udacity.com. also, automatetheboringstuff.com gives you access to a how-to ebook on programming in python, aimed at people who have never coded before. those two resources have helped me out a lot more than codeacademy and whatnot
for modeling and animation: there is also Maya LT, which is $30 USD a month compared to standard $185+ Maya and 3DS Max subscriptions since it is geared toward indie game development
Few things worth pointing out/adding this post:
Xcode no longer requires an iOS developerās license to push your app to a mobile device. However, itās still needed for submission.
If you do develop for mobile and plan on submitting your app I would recommend looking at Appleās human interface guidelines, or at the very least the doās and donāts of UI design. Your app doesnāt have to look and work flawlessly but if itās clearly a mess Apple will reject it.
TalentBuddy was bought by Udemy and I donāt believe the actual coding problems are available anymore? HackerRank effectively does the same thing.
Speaking of Udemy, they just changed their terms of service and courses arenāt astronomically expensive anymore. Itās paid, but if you learn better through videos hereās my favorite iOS course.
Parse is shutting down, hereās a list of alternatives.
DONāT ignore GitHub. There are a LOT of open source projects available that are specifically created to make the production of your app easier. Few examples:
Chart.js makes adding graphs to web pages much easier [x]
Spring makes it easier to implement UI animations into your app [x]
New XKitās source is on here [x]
Realm is super easy to use and is great for databases on mobile devices.
Udacity was mentioned but I want to stress how great it is at explaining concepts without taking up too much time. Itās faster paced but it puts a lot of emphasis on creating projects on your own without telling you explicitly how to do it, which imo is the best way of learning because it makes you have to actively think about the material youāre looking at instead of just copying everything the video does.
Anyone know how a middle aged social worker and/or a receptionist would benefit from learning how to code?
RARE STUDY TIPS
1. write down how much you study over time, then write down how you did on the quiz/test. this will help you see the amount of studying is nessecary for you to get a good grade and fully learn the material!!!
2. make your study space smell fresh, preferably of mint. mint helps you focus and stay sharp. other good smells would be lemon, etc.
3. after studying for a long amount of time, go exercise for ~30 min. shower, get dressed, etc then review the info you had just been studying! you should come back fresher, and your brain is able to remember the info even better!
4. donāt always study in comfy/pj clothes. if you study a lot after school or classes, then itās ok. but if all you plan on doing is studying for that day, for part of the day get dressed up! put on some business casual wear, thatās cute yet functional and do your hair, etc. this will put you in a āget shit doneā mode.
5. after studying a unit/chapter, record yourself explaining it, as if to a person whose never heard of it. this helps SO MUCH. one, explaining/teaching helps you learn so much better, and two, you have a little video to review just before the test!!
6. study on the floor. if you have a carpeted area in your home, spread out all study materials, a white board, etc and study! it helps so much because you are comfertable and everything is within reach. do this if you need a break from desk studying.

my favorite thing iāve learned in college is that way back in ancient china there was this poet/philosopher guy who wrote this whole pretentious poem about how enlightened he was that was likeĀ āthe eight winds cannot move meā blahblahblah and he was really proud of it so he sent it to his friend who lived across the lake and then his friend sends it back and just writes āFARTā (or the ancient Chinese equivalent) on it and he was SO MAD he travels across the lake to chew his friend out and when he gets there his friend saysĀ āwow. the eight winds cannot move you, but one fart sends you across the lakeā
i googled this bc i desperately wanted this to be real, and guess whatā¦it is.
the dudeās name was su dongpo (also known as su shi). his original poem went like this:
稽é¦å¤©äø天ļ¼
毫å ē §å¤§åļ¼
å «é¢Øå¹äøåļ¼
端åē“«éč®
(Humbly bowed my head below all skies Minutest lights shine through my deepest bounds Immovable by strong winds from eight sides Upon purplish gold lotus I seated straightly by the low mound) (x)
on which his friend wroteĀ āę¾å±ā (fart, literally), and you know the rest.
(hereās a chinese source for the skeptics)
this is even funnier because just writingĀ āfartā out of the blue sounds really stupid and random in english, but in chinese, fart (fang pi) is used as a common reply to, well, people talking out of their ass. kind of like how weād useĀ ābullshitā in context.
