Nonverbal Witchcraft
For my witches who cannot speak, struggle to speak, or choose to remain quiet.
This post is a compilation of ideas and personal methods from fellow nonverbal witches. Not everything may fit for you, but hopefully it will give you a starting point!
Spells:
Write the words and focus your energy on bringing them into being. You could burn the piece of paper to finish off the spell. One contributor also mentions burying the paper.Â
Our thoughts are powerful. Focus, and say the words in your mind.
You can also mouth the words without speaking them, if that helps you.
Whispering is also great if that works for you!
Find power in silence, use it as its own tool.
Use instruments to create certain rhythms for different spells, instead of chanting.Â
If sound is helpful, play music that you feel relates/connects you to the spell.
Cast circles and finalize spells by snapping.
Sigils are concentrated intentionâuse that to your advantage. They can absolutely be a base for spellwork.Â
Use a power source; the elements (candles, soil, the air around you, a bowl of water, etc.), crystals, burning herbs, etc.
To feel energy without using words to confirm: use tools that have stronger energy that you can physically feel. Â
Make spell candles, jars or sachets.Â
Use sign language! Iâm of the opinion that everyone should at least learn the basics, and there are plenty of free resources out there!
Specific spells:
Casting a circle:Â âYou can cast a circle by walking in a circle and visualizing your footsteps imprinting on the earth below, creating a barrier of light (color chosen to correspond to intention at the time), walk the circle 3 times and see the barrier in your mind forming a perfect sphere around your work space, becoming brighter and stronger each step you take.â*
To banish: write the things you wish to banish on a piece of paper, light them on fire with a black candle and place in a burn bowl.Â
To release and invite: use two pieces of paper. On one, write down everything youâd like to release from your life. On the other, write down everything youâd like to invite into your life. Burn the release paper and dispose of the ashes, keep the invite paper. (Optional: I like to do this on the new moon, and have a black candle above the release paper and a white candle above the invite paper).
Protective charm: (click here)
To raise you out of a dark place: (click here)
Spell of destruction: (click here)
Energy work:
Use a cajon, bells, singing bowl, steel tongue drum/moondrum, or other instruments to raise energy!
âI have a specific snapping rhythm that is âmagic timeâ. When I snap the rhythm once or three times itâs go time and I fall into the zone.â*
âFor energy work and to raise energy I dance and as my heartbeat gets louder in my ears I mentally chant with it, focusing on a short phrase, intention, or incantation with the energy I physically raised and the meditative repetition of my mind.â*
Use a power source; the elements, crystals, burning herbs, etc.
Most energy work involves movement, rather than words (click here for energy work with restricted movement).
Other ideas:
Worship: write letters, devote your actions, decorate an altar. Prayers donât need to be spoken! Or write your prayers and place them on an altar, burn them, or keep them. (Bedridden worship)
Divination doesnât require spoken word, especially once you have a bond with your tools. You can always use writing, sigils, or your thoughts to channel your intent/question. (Bedridden divination)
Charge crystals with your intent and wear them/carry them in a pouch.Â
Kitchen witchcraft, garden magic, tea magic, etc. etc.Â
Utilize the correspondences of the items in your life.Â

The thing is, we change. We are not the same person we were five years ago. Hel, a lot of us are not even the same people we were last week. We change, and our beliefs, favourites, thoughts and the way we see ourselves changes with it.Â
The same is true for our witchraft, religion and spiritual beliefs. This is why I have a list of question that I like to answer for myself every couple of years. I first started this when I came across a list of questions by Juniper from Walking the Hedge (site no longer in use) in 2008, yes, over ten years ago. Every few years I filled in the questions and looked back at the answers I gave before. Some never changed, some changed quite a lot.Â
When our coven started a new lesson plan, I gave out the list of questions as well. We sealed our answers in envelopes and plan to fill them in again, once we finish our lessons. Then open the envelopes and look at the answers side by side. To see how we have changed.Â
I looked at the list last week and found it actually lacking a bit. The questions were very deity- and spiritual based, so I was missing some more questions about my personality and witchcraft. So I decided to make my own list of questions!Â
Since I wanted to make this more a weekly journaling/grimoire prompt for myself I put together 52 questions. These can be answered weekly (maybe every year) or you can work through the list in one go and repeat that every few years or so.Â
Some notes on the wording: I consider myself both a witch and a pagan, but to keep it easier to read I only used wording like âwitchâ and âwitchcraftâ, they can however be substituted for âpaganâ, âpaganismâ or even âmy pathâ, should that fit you better. When I talk about âsacred spaceâ this can both mean a ritual space like a temple or casting of a circle, but also just your home or outdoors witchy environment.
Iâd love it if you would tag anything you feel comfortable with posting online with the tag #writeyourwitchcraft!

Enchanting Objects
Hello pals im Roy, hi, how are you? Im back! Isnât that great, i think thats absolutely fabulous! Anyways little context, i was trapped because of the pandemic but im back home and thatâs what matters.
Anyways letâs start with the very interesting topic of enchanting objects xd.Â
What does enchanting objects mean?Â
Basically and in a fast summary, you are putting your energy into that object so it fulfills an intention/purpose. Example, im gifting my best friend a little necklace, i enchanted it so it protects her against negativity and toxic people.Â
Can the enchantment run out of energy (stop working)?
Yes, as most of spells that surround energy, they can stop working but donât worry! Thereâs actually a great post regarding this topic by @scroll-of-thoughtâ right here that i would recommend to read. If youâre too lazy the summary is basically 1. create a sigil who recharges the enchanting through something simple such as touch or moonlight 2. create a spell jar who grabs energy from the surroundings and doesnât need to be recharged.Â
How do i enchant objects?Â
1. Cleanse the object, you donât want to put your energy into something that has negative energy in it.Â
2. Then thereâs actually a lot of ways of enchanting an object. So hereâs a brief list:Â
Enchanting with touchÂ
Visualizing energy running to the object (my post regarding visualization here)
Surround the item around crystals (if you have them) that match the intent
Draw a symbol/sigil on it with an invisible thing such as water, or idk be creative
In general i personally prefer the visualizing thing, but you know, paths are so different and maybe some people prefer enchanting with crystals! Remember not to use too many of your energy and that you can grab energy from other things such as plants, crystals, the sun, the moon, etc!
With nothing more to say, good luck in your craft <3
Science and witchcraft are NOT diametrically opposed, and today I want to expand on that a little.
Not every witch reveres the Earth, but a lot of us do. When, for example, science tells us the relative age of the planet, we don't have to thumb through an old book to find a disagreeing figure. Whenever science tells us something about the Earth, it is a wondrous discovery. It is information that further describes the divinity we see in nature. Witches have often been called stewards of the Earth. When science tells us the Earth is in danger and there are things we can do to stop it, we take this very seriously.
Every witch author I grew up reading seemed to agree on one principle: Magick is not your only solution. Magick is a tool you use to bolster your efforts toward achieving what you want. Witches do not float through life waiting for a higher power to answer our prayers. We are active agents in shaping our own lives.
When you are unemployed, you do a prosperity spell AND go job hunting. When you don't have all the answers, you use divination AND seek out new information. When you are sick, you seek medical treatment AND cast a healing spell. Magick is not a substitute for medical treatment, and it sure as hell isn't a substitute for VACCINES. Magick does not invalidate all the breakthrough medical discoveries that can be used to save lives. Magick is to be used in conjunction with medicine.
Witchcraft has often been called the "craft of the wise" and there are certainly witches out there who love to tout themselves as wise. Disavowing science for any reason other than better science is not wisdom. That is ignorance.
It's important to remember that there is more to science than simply physical science. The social sciences are important too. In psychology and sociology, the function of ritual is well established. Ritual helps tune the human mind into a desired pattern and connects communities of people together. The ritual need not be religious or magickal for this to occur. A birthday party, a baby shower, or a meal after a ball game can be a ritual, and so can a spell or sabbat ceremony.
When witches use spells or other magickal techniques to affect their mood or mental state, these rituals can have actual psychological effects. When witches gather together for a spell or ritual, they can generate what sociologist Emile Durkheim called "collective effervescence," a phenomenon common in all religious/spiritual groups. Collective effervescence describes individuals in a group coming together to share the same thoughts and actions and create an excitement of emotion. There are of course pros and cons to this phenomenon, but the results are still real to those experiencing them.
There is a reason alchemy and chemistry contain the same root word. Alchemy, a medieval practice attempting to use magic to transform matter, was the precursor to chemistry, the science of how substances react to each other. The old arts of herbalism and midwifery, commonly ascribed to "witches," gave birth to the field of medicine. The pursuit of magick lead directly to the creation of science.
Lastly, I want to discuss the notion that a lack of scientific proof of magick is evidence that magick is not real. First of all, several phenomena once labeled as magic have been scientifically proven and explained. Second, science never claims to have found an ultimate answer. Science tells us what might be "true" to the best of our current knowledge, and always allows for the appearance of new knowledge to change what we know to be "true." Even scientific laws such as gravity and light are subject to scrutiny should new information be discovered. To claim something is not "real" because it has not yet been proven demonstrates a fundamental lack of understanding of scientific principles and the history of scientific discovery as a whole.
Ultimately, you are all allowed to formulate your own opinions on this topic, and to agree, disagree, and expand on mine. But none of that will ever shake my own truth, which is that witchcraft has created both value and results in my own life. Disagree all you want, but your opinion cannot change what I have already experienced.

âThe human skull is the symbol of death. For the witch death holds a strange fascination. Each and every one of us is born to die, but is death a final end to life? The witch says no. For she knows that: "there are other places and other things". Her whole life and being is devoted to the ever present but unseen world of spirit. To the witch the spirit world is a reality, a living thing. To her everything has a spirit, a soul, a personality, be it animal, mineral, vegetable. That is why to us in the south west we know and believe in the little people, oh, you may laugh, my fine up country folk, but beware for indeed you are in the land where ghoulies and ghosties, and long legged beasties still romp, stomp and go bump in the night. Come, let us show you what the witches and their spirits do...â

Hey witchy friends and divination enthusiasts! Since I recently made a post on some tips for choosing a Tarot deck, I thought Iâd include a post about deck interviews too. If youâre unfamiliar with deck interviews or maybe youâve just never done one yourself, these are some tips that explain a little bit about the process. You can find plenty of deck interview spreads online or on Instagram, but please feel free to make up your own!
For me, my set up is usually as follows:
Card 1: Who are you? or What is your personality?
Card 2: What do I need to know about you?
Card 3: What are your strengths? (You can draw multiple cards for this).
Card 4: What are your weaknesses? (You can also do multiples for this one).
Card 5: Who am I to you? or What is my personality to you?
Card 6: What are you here to teach me/help me with/etc.?
Card 7: How can I best work with you?
Youâre welcome to use this if youâd like but itâs only one example! As always, do whatever feels best to you. You can make your deck interview as long or as short as you like or ask whatever questions you feel necessary.
Iâm always available to chat if you have questions and you can find me here or on Instagram @readingsbylily. â¨
â¤ď¸â¤ď¸Letâs do some intermediate witch exercises!â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
So youâre done with beginner witchcraft... what now?
Pick something from this list:
Learn a new physical skill! Embroidery, watercolor, baking pies, baking bread, digital art, violin, jewelery making, etc. these are all things you can apply to your magical practice in various ways. Take knot magic and sigil magic and combine them into an embroidered divination mat! Thatâs something I did!
Explore some random object in your house and apply it to your practice. Examples: dry erase marker, deodorant, hand lotion, shoelaces, a humidifier, graph paper. See how similar tools change your spells: does writing a sigil in sharpie vs a colored pencil change how the effect manifests? Write down how your experiments go and integrate the results going forward! Figure out what works, and why it works
Do that one thing youâve been too scared to try. That thing you tried once and failed at. For me it was growing herbs in pots. For you it might be energy work, or glamours, or sewing, or anything! Revisit the thing you couldnât do earlier in your practice, think about why you failed the first time and how you can do better now that youâve gained more experience
Make something basic that youâve never made! Was it too messy? You didnât have time? Didnât think youâd do it right? Try things like Eggshell powder/chalk, using leftover wax and a wick to make a new candle, make a candleholder out of air cry clay, and donât be afraid to mess up! Itâs gonna suck the first couple of times! My latest leftover wax candle didnât even want to burn once I finished it! Thatâs okay!
Revisit your goals and aspirations! What do you think your practice ads to your life, and are you satisfied with it? Write it down! How have your previous goals changed?
Start thinking about what you buy, where you get your supplies, and how you can acquire them for the best effect. You have enough base stuff to get by and focus on quality over quantity now For example all the crystals, candle holders, and shells I buy now are from second hand locations (more often than not this specific antique store I really like) I find that distancing them from the like... source I guess helps with the character of the pieces. They work better and surprisingly have less baggage than objects straight from a retailer!
Pare down!!!! Look through, find things that donât work! Itâs easier to start big and take things out! Do you like working with days of the week but donât like keeping track of the moon phases? Toss it! Like working with herbs but some correspondences donât make sense? Toss them! Wish you were one of those people who do complicated circle castings but you just donât like doing it? Donât! Of change it until you find a method that serves you! Toss out the things weighing you down!
Freestyle!!! Combine spell types! Write down a bunch of ingredients and spell types in a jar and pick out 2-3 and just GO FOR IT! You might draw out âbinding, poppet, crystal gridâ or âspell jar, wardâ or âglamour, candle spellâ write down what you did, the specifics and conditions, and keep track of how it works! Refine! Refine!!!!
This is the time to start a nicer grimoire! You have a messy workbook already, a place to work and worry and try things, but now youâre ready to get a slightly nicer notebook to record things carefully, list out your favorite spells and rituals, color code (and be able to show it to other people and they can actually read your handwriting). It doesnât have to be absurdly fancy, mine isnât! But itâs something that visually shows my progress and is so much easier to reference back to for spells I need to re-do often like my room wards.
(I use this thing called a travelers notebook, it basically has smaller notebooks inside it and you can add or remove sections as you like and they come in lines, dot grid, and blank paper!!!! Plus they LOOK like grimoires without the unnecessary decorations with religious connotations that most advertised grimoires have!)
