This video footage was taken by an infrared camera mounted on a drone by a research team trying to determine the best method to estimate the population of white-tailed deer in Wild Basin.

WONDERING how effective the native cedar mulch has been in deterring invasive species?
Wondering how a drone could help estimate the density of white-tailed deer at Wild Basin?
Danica, Andrew, and Lexington are graduate students who became interested in conducting research at Wild Basin. They wondered about the different ways in which they could monitor the numbers of white-tailed deer in the preserve. When deer occur in high densities, they can alter plant communities and reduce habitat quality, so it is important to keep track of their density over time. There are several methods that can be helpful in estimating deer density, including driving surveys, motion-triggered wildlife cameras, and a drone equipped with an infrared camera. The research team will be using all three methods this fall to estimate deer density in Wild Basin. The team will compare and analyze all 3 methods in an attempt to calculate a more accurate and robust estimate of white-tailed deer density within the preserve.
From Wild Basin to South By Southwest Eco!!
Clarissa from Wild Basin here! I would like to share a little bit of what I learned and experienced last week at South by Southwest Eco. This year I had the wonderful opportunity to attend SXSWEco, a conference where people across the nation and from countries around the globe come together to spread and exchange ideas. The event consisted of multiple activities such as important speakers, one-on-one sessions, competitions, and workshops. Indigenous Storytelling for the 21st Century and The Optimistic View for Merging Energy and Climate Policies were two events that struck me the most.
As Wild Basin’s Public Relations and Outreach intern, the Indigenous Storytelling for the 21st-Century panel that discussed the use of social media to present their story was an event that immediately stood out for me. The panelists discussed how social media has become an important medium in which indigenous people can use to raise public awareness of the critical issues they are facing. Indigenous people are standing up to defend their ancestral homes, their culture, their future generations, and sovereign rights.
One of the key speakers, Tara Houska Director of National Campaigns for Honor the Earth and a tribal attorney discussed the inaccuracy of how natives are portrayed. Indigenous people rarely make it on the news unless it is something that can be used to portray them as violent and aggressive. Houska goes on to explain that those situations are extremely rare, protesting takes place in a peaceful manner and often consists of shaking hands with law enforcement. Another speaker discussed how social media has played an important role in truly showing what is occurring and letting their voices and stories be heard.
An important person at the conference that I didn’t want to miss was my very own 6th-grade hero the science guy: Bill Nye. With a humorous and enlightening tone Nye talked about his optimistic perspective in merging energy and climate policies. He also covered a large array of topics. Nye discussed the importance of providing three essential resources to everyone in the world: 1) clean water 2) reliable, renewably produced electricity and 3) access to the Internet. Climate change is not anything new it's been happening for millions of years but it is the rate at which climate change is occurring that is alarming. Nye explains how everyone is affected by climate change, not just those who are red or who are blue. He stressed the importance of voting but in particular voting with the environment in mind.
An interesting point Nye made was the capability of America to run strictly on renewable energy if it wanted to. Imagine that! Nye also discussed important steps that could be taken in order to slow down the rate in which climate change is occurring such as implementing a carbon tax and electrifying all transportation. He went into detail explaining emerging innovative technology that could potentially transform the world. Bill Nye the Science Guy ended on a positive note by inviting the audience to take action and empowering them to change the world!
Tracking the Emerald Ash Borer at Wild Basin!
This fall semester Dr.Concilio will lead and engage students from Population Ecology (MSEM 6301) in a long-term data collection analyzing forest structure and composition here at Wild Basin focusing on areas populated by ash trees (Fraxinus spp). Ash trees are extremely vulnerable and are projected to experience high mortality with the approaching emerald ash borer. Population Ecology students will characterize the ecosystem pre-infestation. Student sampling will be taking place 2-3 times this fall semester to collect data on overstory composition on 5-6 sites. Students will obtain ecological research skills and determine the best methods for sampling and collecting data.

Meet and Greet at Wild Basin!
On Wednesday, September 28th, Wild Basin Creative Research Center held a evening event that gave many supporters the opportunity to meet and greet the new director of Wild Basin, Dr. Barbara Dugelby and see the Center’s new environmental exhibits. The event resulted in an excellent turnout of volunteers, students, faculty and staff from St. Edwards, as well as Travis County and City of Austin partners. The event also served as a venue for students to present their Wild Basin research, Approximately forty attendees enjoyed pizza, salad, and beverages while meeting Dugelby, viewing the exhibits, talking with students about their research, and catching up with old friends and making new ones. The presence of amazing people, good food, and pleasant weather made it a great time and another successful event for Wild Basin!

Hook Scholar Spotlight: Abigail Knopf, Savannah Bryson, and Eric Johnson
Successful habitat restoration techniques are hard to determine. A group of graduate students seeking a Master’s of Sustainability & Environmental Management have been awarded the Hook Scholarship for 2016-17. St. Edward’s Hook Scholars Savannah, Eric, and Abigail are in the process of evaluating different habitat restoration techniques at Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. They are currently monitoring 8-12 relatively similar areas within the preserve to investigate which methods have been more effective to manage invasions of non-native species over the long term. Their results will help restore habitats more effectively, whether it be manually removing invasive species or using native cedar mulch to deter invasive species.

Pokémon Go at Wild Basin
The Pokémon Go craze has swept the nation and Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve in Austin, Texas is no exception. Pokémon Go has tapped into humans innate sense of hunting in this case hunting Pokémon. Catching Pokémon has become a virtual reality interaction with the players and real life surroundings. As soon as you enter Wild Basin you have the opportunity to collect some poke balls, incents, or maybe even an egg to hatch at the pokéstop located at the welcome sign. Before you hit the trails be sure to stock up on pokéballs at the other two pokéstops so you can catch something like the Krabby or Nidoran in the pictures here.
Don't forget to pop an egg in the incubator so you can be hatching while you hike our 2.27 miles of trails. Once your done with your hike try battling some of your Pokémon at our Gym located at the front walkway leading to the main building from the parking lot. If you going to look for Pokémon or just hatch some eggs, you may as well hike somewhere beautiful like Wild Basin and get your nature fix at the same time!
At Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve you will have the opportunity to not only encounter pokemons such as Krabby but you will also have the opportunity to come face to face with peculiar wildlife and endangered species!
