“THEY’RE BREAKING IN!” Jess yelled as she pressed her body against the door, “Jess, theres no saving this place, we have to go” Ronan pulled her elbow dragging the woman away from the door, just as the roamers began to pour in. Zelda’s eyes searched frantically around the house for the two but they’d been pushed back and forced to find another exit. She ran out the backdoor, looking around for the other members of her group, but they were no where to be found. She could hear a few screams in the distance and looked towards the sound, she didn’t make it far before the voices disappeared and she was alone.
Zelda’s eyes snapped open, she’d had that nightmare four times this week alone. But were memories really nightmares? She sighed softly and sat up rubbing her hands over her face and looked up seeing the sun light shining through one of the windows. She pushed herself up, digging into her bag and pulling out a package of baby wipes she’d found. It was the only thing keeping her relatively clean.
She began getting herself ready for the day, laying a few maps out on the floor and looking over the marked up places. She was headed to New York, well- that was the plan anyways. She’d come all the way from California and she was determined to find her family, at least some of it. She sighed softly feeling her heart sink at the small part of her that felt they were gone. Quickly she pushed the thoughts aside and focused on her mission for the day, getting more supplies.
She saw a small convenient store on the way to finding shelter last night and made a mental note of going back to it. From the outside, it looked untouched, which was odd now a days. She tossed her backpack over her shoulder and tied her hair back, heading out the door. She looked around, making sure there weren’t any undead lurking about and then up at the sky. It was probably around noon, which was late for her- but time didn’t exist anymore. She headed back towards the small store, keeping hidden in the woods-but was still able to see the road between the trees, its how she preferred it.
Zelda arrived to the store a while later, she sighed softly cursing herself for sleeping so long and pulled at the door. Locked. Of course it was. She sighed and went around back-trying the back door, locked. She headed back around front, searching the abandoned parking lot for something to smash in a window. She found a handicap sign that had been uprooted and grabbed it, dragging it behind her. She groaned slightly not realizing how heavy these signs were, or maybe she was just weak. The girl lifted the sign and put all of her effort into slamming it into the glass, shattering the pane and letting the sign fall. She inhaled a deep breath before stepping through the window and looking around.
She frowned slightly, seeing the place was fairly empty, shevles turned over and blood stained the floor. It was too much hope to think this place hadn’t been found yet. She began shuffling through the mess, trying to find anything that she could use, her main goal was finding water or food but she couldn’t be picky and would take anything she could find.
The store didn’t have much to offer and it was getting late, she knew she’d need to get back to the run down neighborhood before it got too dark. She headed back, trying to move as quickly as possible to save the rest of the daylight. She hopped over the broken down brick and walked towards the house she’d managed to find that wasn’t completely torn apart. Zelda stopped as she spotted a figure sitting against one of the buildings, she thought it was a roamer before catching glimpse of thier face. She adjusted the straps on her backpack and wondered if she should just sneak by them, what if they was hurt though? Her conscious couldn’t let her just leave someone possibly injured. The girl slowly made her way towards them, “Hey.” she said in a soft voice, “Hey are you alright?”
