I think one of the things I really love about Mayoi is all the instances of little braveries we see from him throughout the story.

So many times he's anxious, he's terrified, his body is screaming at him to run away from this awful situation that's probably, definitely going to result in something terrible terrible terrible.

But he pushes through. Even when he feels so sick and looks so pale and awful before a performance that his friends have to check in on him to make sure he's still breathing. He loves these people who have shown him so much love and kindness in turn, and he won't let them down when they need him.

And he does it. Even if he's frightened, even if it leaves him utterly drained the next day. He lives through so much fear and anxiety on a constant basis, but he never stops trying to live, to be the idol he's born to be.

He's not some hero charging in to fight a dragon, but to me he's still such a brave character, in an everyday, human form of bravery that I just love in a narrative.

The world is scary, but don't let that stop you doing things. Do it anyway. Do it scared.

It might turn out okay.
