Theory about Yoon Seungho:
Oh I’m such an idiot. I don’t know why it took me so long to realize. I think I agree with the theory that some people have about why Seungho is the way that he is. *warning possible spoilers ahead*
What we know of from the hints in the story so far:
1. Seungho’s old servant Kim and Jihwa seem to know about Seungho’s past. Despite Seungho acting like a bag of dicks over and over, somehow Jihwa is able to look past it because of this horrible trauma that Seungho apparently endured.
2. Seungho is (or was before Na-kyum anyways) extremely promiscuous. Not that somebody in his position couldn’t be, but it takes a certain amount of screw-you-all devil-may-care attitude (especially in Joseon times) to be known to fuck around with lots of men. It’s like Seungho doesn’t care how much further his reputation can be tarnished or how much further he can fall.
So taking a moment here to reflect: at first, like many people I wondered if Seungho had been betrayed by a past lover. Maybe he screws around because he is heartbroken and can’t bring himself to love anymore. But somehow that theory just didn’t really make sense to me.
3. I think this was the point in the manhwa that really convinces me about the theory I currently have. In the last chapter of season one when Seungho talks to Inhun he says he has no interest in government posts. He says that the sight of those old bearded men make him shudder.
You see where I’m going with this? I think Seungho may have been abused (possibly, likely sexually abused) when he was younger. When I realized this everything seemed to make sense. I’m not sure what Seungho’s relationship was with his father, but perhaps the anger that Seungho has toward his father stems from his father not having stood up for Seungho when he was being abused. Perhaps Seungho was even victim blamed and felt abandoned.
So Seungho tried to turn his trauma around by exerting control over other people, lashing out whenever he is frustrated, and rubbing his depravity in his father and society’s face. Seungho is probably filled with anger from the way he had suffered at the hands of more powerful men.
Of course if this is true, it would not justify one bit the hurt he has in turn caused Na-kyum or any other people (and let’s not forget he basically murdered someone in the first chapter). However it would definitely provide a deeper level of understanding as to why Seungho behaves the way he does.
Afternoon coffee date
I just finished reading chapter 48 of POTN and it broke me to pieces. Nakyum my poor babbyy 😭 I also really wanted to see Seung-ho punish that servant who put rocks in Nakyum's rice... maybe next chapter *fingers crossed*
Dear Anon, I feel your pain! This chapter really packed a heavy emotional punch. Already in chapter 47 there were hints that Seungho was bothered by Na-Kyum's meek behavior,
and this time we got to see just HOW bothered he was.
I think it feels especially terrible now because we can finally see how much progress Seungho made in this relationship. Back in the first chapters Na-Kyum was all kinds of sad and terrified, and Seungho didn't give three flips about his state of mind. But now, not only did he notice that something was off with Na-Kyum, it genuinly bothered him. So much that he sat around moping about it and drowning his sorrows😂
Unfortunately he doesn't know how to handle it. Suddenly becoming warm and caring after being an entitled asshole most of his life isn't easy. Seungho simply doesn't have the tools to address the situation. So he falls back on what he knows: trying to simply get what he wants and using sex as a power play.
Of course, what he wants can no longet be taken. Which is exactly what we saw with Na-Kyum's recent change. Na-Kyum is willing to sleep with Seungho whenever he wants. He can have Na-Kyum's body, he can have his art... which only makes it even more obvious that it can never be enough. Because what Seungho needs from Na-Kyum has shifted ever since that night when Na-Kyum embraced him and cried confessions of love into his shoulder, mistaking Seungho for his learnt sir. I think Seungho has been chasing that ever since like an addict chases that very first high, and until he figures it out he'll be hurting both Na-Kyum and himself.
And don't even get me started on Na-Kyum! That poor boy!😢 First being kicked aside and shamed by his first love and trusted authority figure and then realizing he had nowhere to go. No place in the world where he would be welcomed. That just broke my f☆cking heart! I think at this point he just shut down. You know how the body goes into damage control when the brain can't function properly because of the trauma? "You want me to be a whore? You want to f☆ck me? You want me to draw for you pictures of you f☆ucking me? Yeah, ok, sure.... whatever is earier.. the path of the least resistance." I think that's whats happening to Na-Kyum. He just doesn't have the will to fight, to object. There's no REASON for him to fight anymore.
Sorry I painted a rather bleak picture here, Anon.😅 But don't worry I'm optimistic! I think this could be a great pivotal point for a redemption arc for Seungho and taking-charge-of-his-own-life arc for Na-Kyum.😊
And of course the rice guy will get his comeuppance. I'm sure Seungho will not let anyone who dared to hurt his precious painter off the hook.
This explains a lot...
☆This is such a masterful image. It really shows how Byeonduck can tell a story with just a few panels.
☆We can see their whole power dynamic with just one glance. Seungho towering over Na-Kyum, his wide robes making him even grander, more imposing. While Na-Kyum is naked before him, on display, as his master demanded. His a small figure here isn't enticing as it's usually depicted, it's pathetic, vulnerable, almost childlike.
☆This is how Na-Kyum feels - submissive, his body, over which he's given up agency, is now just a commodity to be offered up on demand.
A romantic breakfast with your bae♡
Am I remembering this scene correctly
Wait, so where were you gay again?
