but once in a great while one is born amongst them with eyes as green as the moss on a tree in the heart of the forest; by these signs do the gods mark those they have chosen to receive the gift
☾ ▓ independent shaggydog | private & selective | book based
⇨ jon snow
well, so much for being talented at warging — it was his fault, though, for being so hasty. so used he was to Ghost ever welcoming his touch, that he didn’t even consider the obvious fact that Shaggy was a different individual in his own right… therefore, rather than reacting with anger or fear —although a bit of it was growling in his stomach, he couldn’t deny—, what Jon did was to kneel on the soft snow besides the wolf once more, lowering his tone to a soothing one.
‘ i’m sorry, buddy, didn’t mean to frighten you… it’s alright… ‘
smiling as the rough tongue began cleaning away the fresh wound, he allowed Shaggy time to do it before attempting anything else. it hurt, of course, but Jon actually counted himself lucky for still having that hand — what with his recklessness, he might well have been short on it now. it would be nothing that a few bandages wouldn’t solve, anyway, and Clydas would know what to do.
‘ i was trying to understand what you mean — like Ghost. Ghost speaks to me sometimes, and we also share dreams. ‘
Ears pricked at the mention of Ghost, and of.. dreams. Shaggy had dreams, dreams with Rickon and lesser so now that he was alone. They were dark and frightening, nowadays he could only hear Rickon’s screams as he fled the metal cages.
Jon, the boy would cry, find Jon!
Shaggydog panted and whimpered before ears laid flat on his neck, tilting upwards his chin as he let out a howl. Rickon! The direwolf cried, for surely the boy would hear him this time. Surely Rickon would know Shaggydog was with his kin, readying themselves to hunt down his captors and free the youngest Stark.
It was then that Shaggy snapped his head back around to the forest and darted forward, into the undergrowth of the night. It had taken the wolf only a moment for his dark, shaggy fur to become part of the blackened forest, swallowed, alone and hidden once more. Shaggy came to a halt only as the scent of the two-legged wore off, mossy eyes peered back towards the ever-so-faint flicker of light at Castle Black.
The wolf tilted back its head once more, a long and sombre howl parted its lips. An owl in a nearby tree fled as the wolf’s howl saw to no end. This time he wanted to be found.
⇨ Jon Snow
gods, he could have stayed like that for the rest of his life; arms around the large direwolf, face buried and lost amidst his shaggy, dark fur. what peace and soothing tranquility it would have been, so different from the horrors that awaited him —that awaited them both— as soon as he was to open his eyes once more… but Jon had never been one for running away, and let alone now that command had been bestowed upon him.
as he was about to guide Shaggy back inside the castle, however, the wolf’s antics made him wonder. no matter how much more vocal he was than Ghost, eternally silent, human words were still something that eluded him — which obviously meant Jon had no manner of understanding what he wanted, at least initially. a warg, many of the free folk had named him, yes… perhaps there would be no better time to try and finally capitalize such gift, then. stepping closer yet again, he left his ungloved hand on top of Shaggydog’s head and closed his eyes, focusing. trying to match his breathing to the wolf’s.
‘ what is it, boy…? what do you want me to know? ‘
With yellow teeth bared, the beast bit Jon’s ungloved hand after feeling it press against his head. The rumble in his gut passed through his lips with a deep growl as emerald eyes burnt like wildfire gazing up at the two-legged. He was still in that moment of fear, of unknowingness. Shaggy had lived with only Rickon and the wildling two-legged before separating, all others he had seen were either hunted or hidden from; that same instinct and fear was running rampant in his veins, but soon enough his growls turned to whimpers.
This is Rickon’s kin, Shaggydog remembered. His eyes softened on the two-legged as he extended his muzzle back to Jon’s hand. Delicately, he lapped the droplets of blood with the hopes that it may reconcile their kinship. The wolf could feel its heart thumping away, but he would not throw away this chance due to past fears in Winterfell. Shaggy was much larger now, nearing the size of a pony. A chain would never hold him prisoner again, not whilst Rickon’s life at stake.
*snuggles up with to keep warm, softly borks* (wilderhowl)

the little STARK boy tried to keep warm as best he could. the winds had truly started to set in the woods right now. the WINTER had started to come slowly ––––– it made rickon wonder how the two would live when it truly came. for now the two of them running in the woods hiding from the world had worked; but now when the winter came he worried about them. shaggy would be fine, he was animals of the winter. rickon might be a STARK and a child of the woods and air but he was still human. he could only take so much. he knew the wolf would never leave him, never wish to leave him anywhere. “ i love you “ —– rickon whispred into shaggys fur. his hands tugged into the fur to keep them warm. the two has a relationship like no other. they knew each other, understood each other and loved each other on a wilder level. shaggy’s siblings had their own companion, one they would never wish to leave either: but the two of them had something specal that rickon did not understand. shaggy might either, but it was there. “ thank you” he added. it wasn’t just think for for now, but for everything. for keeping him safe, for letting him lean on him when he was tired ––– keep him away from harm; in a way only he could do. “ we’ll be fine” rickon wanted ro promise him that, but he also knew he could not promise him that.
⇨ guess who’s gonna make another icon or two it’s me for once
⇨ a thing for @mxncipium
Sea salt burned his lungs as deep emerald eyes shot open, the beast coughed and heaved until ocean water shot out from his gut. Shaggydog could scarcely remember what had happened; he knew only that something had struck the boat, sending he and Rickon, and that other two-legged, flying as flames painted oak. From that, he remembered only pain, from the corals as he was smashed against them and the ocean water as it rushed into his body.
The dried salt frosted the tips of his coal fur, though it did not shield him from the heat. He felt the sand burning the pads of his paws, and the sun’s rays slowly crept through his matted, mangy fur. The direwolf panted, whimpering as he tried calling for Rickon. Was he safe? Shaggydog pushed up with wobbly legs, knowing he’d only find the youngest Stark by looking.
⇨ Rickon Stark
he knew not to stop him. rickon&&shaggy had long ago found their own little understanding of each other. the wolf would protect him, and rickon would never question him. especially not when they were in the woods in the darkness. rickon trusted the instincts of the beast. knowing he would never leave him, and never let anything bad happen to him as long as his paw was on earth. ––––– never in a million years would he find someone as loyal as the black wolf. never would he find someone who would protect him as fears as shaggy did. rickon could hear it too. how the bush was making a sound, and it wasn’t the cold winter wind making that sound. he could tell by shaggy’s body language that there was someone close by. someone the wolf did not seem to welcome close to them. the blue eyes tully boy pushed back when he saw the wolf turn it’s head. shaggy was a hunter, a fighter, and a born killer. ––––– nothing could change that, truly. the stark boy knew what would happen next, without truly knowing. one minute he felt the big wolf beside him, the next he saw dark blood hit the ground. his normally so bright blue eyes turned darker as he looked at the man. he saw how life left his eyes and the blood. perhaps rickon was supposed to be too young to see this. yet he had seen it before, and much more so it did not bother him. the dead body of the man was big, but he knew it was nothing to shaggy. “ good boy” rickon whispered. maybe he should walk away, turn away and let shaggy follow him. however, he didn’t. rickon walked closer to the wolf and the prey. his little hand reached out to pet his wolf. in the process, it got covered in blodd. however, rickon did not care. “ you got him” he saw the colour of his clothes. this had to be one of the people who would follow the lions. so shaggy had done right by killing him.
Claws dug deeper into the man’s flesh and bones as life was taken from him. A mixture of blood and saliva slowly dribbled from the beast’s lips onto him as his eyes gazed up to Shaggydog as though to be looking beyond him and this realm, staring forevermore into the starlit abyss. The wolf’s coal fur stood up, giving the impression of an even larger beast whose teeth still remained but inches snarling from the man’s face. Shaggydog was stood rigid atophim until a soft, tiny hand pressed against his fur. He hadn’t even heard Rickon at first, he needed to be certain the man would not move another beat, but he soon knew the boy was safely at his side.
Shaggydog’s features softened as emerald eyes peered back to Rickon. The boy was fearless, just as Shaggy needed to be, and so soothed his companion’s worry. The black beast padded off the man and pressed his sticky, wet muzzle into Rickon’s hands. He was certain more men in cloaks of gold and red were lurking nearby, but for now they were safe. There was even game now to be eaten, so Shaggy tilted his head back to see the boy’s face. With a step closer, the direwolf lapped at Rickon’s cheek.
“Are we going home?” Rickon asked excitedly. “I want my horse. And I want applecakes and butter and honey, and Shaggy. Are we going where Shaggydog is?”
⇨ Jon Snow
no need for rush. Jon would easily spare all day for this, if need be. didn’t part of the garrison consider him a warg and half-wolf? let them be CORRECT, then; let them start seeing him going about his duties not only with one direwolf tagging along, but two. what a spectacle would that make, especially for Queen Selyse && her men. therefore, he waited patiently and allowed Shaggy as long as he required to get familiar with the scent — and, hopefully, to have memory of it.
and the gods were good, for once. a surprised, quiet gasp escaped him when the large animal all but POUNCED him soon after, nearly knocking him back on his arse — and, had it happened, it would have tasted sweeter than any lemon cake could hope to. the rough, wet tongue was on his face next thing he knew, slobbering it up with wolf spit, and Jon began to laugh; he laughed loudly and long, more SINCERELY than he’d done in literal months. wrapping his arms around the dark frame, as black as the wool and furs he was dressed in himself, the bastard tried his best to stay up straight && began stroking Shaggy’s back.
‘ i missed you, boy… which of the Seven Hells have you come from?? let us go back within, Ghost will love to meet you. ‘
His muscles tensed and twitched as he felt arms holding him. Rickon had never been big enough to do it, and all those else whom had tried never did it with good intent. It was a new sensation for the direwolf, and though he was terrified, he also enjoyed it. It was something of comfort, or mayhaps that was the scent of pack still lingering on him.. Nevertheless, Shaggy still whimpered and cried as he buried his muzzle deeper into the young man’s chest. Mossy eyes screwed shut, wishing to show Rickon’s kin all that he had seen. Rickon appeared less and less in his dreams as Shaggy ran further from him; the wolf did not even know if the boy was safe anymore.
The black beast then moved off Jon, quickly nipping his sleeve. If he could not show Jon the dreams, he would bring him to them. A grumble passed through the direwolf’s chest, warning him-- begging him to come. The wolf sharply tugged backwards, eyes unblinkingly pierced up at Rickon’s kin. Shaggydog was unrelenting; he would not leave Rickon behind, he would not forget him. The boy and his wolf were one soul cast into two bodies.
⇨ Arya Stark
Nymeria watched behind her often to be sure her littermate followed. Of all her siblings, their raven-haired brother was the least trusting of people, even the people of his kin. Silly brother. She wished that he knew that no one here meant them any harm. The grey wolf slowed for a moment allowing her brother to catch up. She followed Arya until they reached the stairs, looming close to her kin, licking his muzzle in comfort. She knew the longing that could be felt when away from their humans.
Arya lead the way up the stone staircase, pausing whenever she heard other footsteps, hushing the two wolves on her heels. Nymeria fought a grumble in her throat when she sniffed Setpa Mordane’s approach and ushered her brother into the corner, lowering herself to the ground to avoid detection. Arya went ahead trying to draw the septa away and allow the two wolves to be unseen so they could continue on their search for Rickon.
Shaggy was heard at all hours of the day, even at night, causing many to stir in their bed chambers. The pup could not help it, his voice was always rumbling and ready; there was nothing he did not bark at or whine to. As they ran, his tongue dangled out the side of his mouth as he grumbled for Rickon. When they drew closer to Septa Mordane, the pup felt his littermate’s eyes on him and so he went as quiet as he could - though was still not silent.
The two legged had ushered them away, however. Was it Rickon she was hiding? No, Shaggy would smell him.. Shaggy would-- his head snapped in a different direction, down a hall the pup had never noticed before. There were few times he was allowed inside, and almost all of those times it was by Rickkon’s side as he was hushed and hidden away. A door closed at the end of the hall, Rickon! The coal direwolf bounded down the hall, paws reaching further forward with each step. His tail was bouncing from side-to-side as Rickon’s scent grew stronger. We’re almost there!
The direwolf rounded a corner, then came skidding to a halt - though it was not enough time to prevent himself from crashing into the Lord of Winterfell. Urine trickled down the beast’s leg as his mossy eyes slowly peered up at Eddard. The black beast was struck with fear, so quickly lurched back at Nymeria. Whining, he nipped at his littermate’s feet. Rickon’s scent grew stronger, but it was trapped further down the hall, behind the Lord.
⇨ Rickon Stark
he had long ago learned that the world never seemed to be rooting for a STARK. when he was even younger, rickon used to play with the puppies back home in WINTERFELL before shaggydog came to him. those days had passed by so fast. the very first meeting with the black wolf pup had been a strange one, because both boy and wolf had been rather unsure about the situation. arya and sansa both had fallen in love with their wolves at once; as rickon had found it rather difficult to trust –––––– just like he still did, but now he trusted the wolf with his life. the direwolf made rickon feel less alone in the world, even if he wasn’t another human, but he was FAMILY.
the direwolf was the sign of house stark so it was only fitting that the children had one. rickon did not see himself as the owner of shaggy ( he’d only show off to people sometimes ) but he knew shaggy wasn’t a pet. —– the wolf was something much more. feeling the tongue at his fingers he stroked his hand in his fur as he started to walk deeper into the woods; trying to not make a sound. the NORTH was filled with everything that could hurt them. they had to be careful and watch each other.
The direwolf’s warm, wet nose still pressed against the boy’s palm, and ears were pricked forward, attentive and wary. Shaggydog could remember his brothers and sisters; he could remember playing with them as whelps, nipping and chasing, but he never quite understood how. Many times, Shaggy had ended up nipping too hard or pouncing too forwardly. Ghost never seemed to complain, and Nymeria had always tried to show him how to do it better, but, once, Lady had nipped him sharply in return - Shaggy quickly learned from that incident.
The coal-furred wolf licked Rickon’s fingers once more. I’m still here. He stopped only when the ruffling in the bushes continued; there was a low grunt, perhaps even words, though Shaggydog did not wish to take any second chances. Rickon’s safety was compromised. The beast snapped his head to the directions of the bushes before leaping forward. Yellow teeth poked through his lips as a deep growl rumbled in his chest. His great paws pushed up, leaping as the man came into view; and, without a second thought, Shaggydog sunk his claws into the man’s shoulders. Teeth ploughed into the man’s neck, ripping out a chunk of flesh as he screamed and wailed in agonising fear. A steel sword toppled from the man’s hands as he cowered and cried, slowly dying; Shaggydog remained atop him with blood dripping from his teeth, wild mossy eyes unblinkingly staring into the man’s tear-stained ones. The beast snarled and pricked its ears back: yield.

◆ the two of them never seemed to be able to catch new real fresh air. somethings never changed, and it seemd that the young STARK of WINTERFELL would pherheps be the only one left of the buch of them. he knew his lord father was gone, and now not long ago he had been told his lady mother had left the world of the living as well. rickon always did try his best not to cry, but right now in the darkness of the woods all alone with only his wolf by his side he allowed himself to cry. feeling heated tears fall down his cheeks as his mind flew to his brothers. robb was gone as well, and for all he knew bran might be too. nothing had ever been told to him about his sisters, but faith would have it;; they might also have left him. in the darkness he felt very alone, and LOST. the only thing keeping him from slowly dying would be his best friend. shaggydog and rickon might both be wild once, the kind who never wished to stay still but even he could feel the pain punching in his heart. it never let him breath normally anymore. his blue TULLY eyes met the wolf’s green once as the beast licked his fingers to try and comfort him. “ we’ll be okay” he whispered, more to himself than to shaggy; but a part of him knew that the two of them could survive anything if they stuck TOGETHER

⇨ Arya Stark
Nymeria took the offered meat from Arya’s hands and brought it to her littermate, dropping it close to her brother’s muzzle. She licked the black wolf’s muzzle in an attempt to comfort, sensing his longing for his person. The large grey wolf knew how her heart ached when separated from her person and wanted her pack to be freed from the hurt. She nudged her blood closer to Arya as her person spoke, joining in with a sympathetic whine.
“Okay. C’mon, we gotta be careful because if mother or septa mordane and any of the other septas or maesters see us we’re gonna get in trouble. Let’s go see Rickon,” she whistled a sharp pitch, gesturing for Nymeria to follow. The grey wolf took a few steps behind her girl before pausing and letting out a bark at her littermate. Hurry up!
Shaggydog nuzzled Nymeria as she neared him, a soft whimper then parted his lips before he quickly gobbled up the bits of meat; he was not underfed by any means, but there had been some who’d teased him with food that he scarcely took the risk of having it snatched away. The beast licked its lips with wide, unblinking eyes watching on. Pale red juice dribbled down his chin, and he wondered if there was more. Nymeria was edging him closer, so he supposed there was; with a soft, elegant step, the black direwolf moved closer.
Mossy eyes watched the girl as an ear flicked back to Nymeria. He could smell where the meat had been on the girl’s hands, though he warily listened to his littermaate as to not overstep boundaries. It was only when the two-legged had spoken had the black direwolf halted, his tail ceased wagging and slowly crept back under his belly. His upper lip quivered upwards, revealing his large teeth as she spoke. A jolt of fear rushed through the wolf; It’s a trap, he thought, not quite understanding her words. However, when Rickon’s name was spoken once more, the beast’s attention had been caught. Rickon! He wanted to cry out, watching as the two left. Quickly he bounded after them, unsure of what was going to happen but also knowing his other half had something to do with it.

⇨ Arya Stark
She had wolf dreams again tonight. These came often now, more so since she stepped foot onto Westeros once more. The wolf dreams, her identity as the Night Wolf with a pack of her own has become a nightly occurrence. Arya dreamed of teeth ripping into warm flesh with blood dripping down her lips, matting her fur and the howls echoed by pack, by those she needed to and could protect.
Her dreams were disturb by a howl, not one of her pack, as she had learn to know the calls of each and everyone of her little brother and sisters. This was not from the pack, no she could sense the presence much closer to her, real… not like a dream. Arya jolted awake to find her camp fire had long since gone out, the soot and ash cool to the touch. She did her best to relight it when she felt eyes on her. The girl moved closer to the cave opening with slow steps until she stumbled back at the sight of a dark shadow.
A haunting chill swept through the trees as the direwolf’s song came to an end. The bite of winter blew straight through like teeth sinking into his thick black fur, yet his ears pricked forward. Nostrils flared, drawing in the bittersweet scent it carried. What is it? The direwolf padded closer, feeling the snow melt underneath his paws as glowing green eyes looked onwards. He could feel it, in the air, but what was it?
It was not Rickon, for that the direwolf was certain of. Shaggydog would know Rickon in whatever form he took; their shared dreams had brought upon them a closeness, they were one soul cast into two bodies. Inch by inch, the direwolf edged closer; whatever lay lurking would either be in this cave or.. No, Rickon is safe across the water; that thing is here.
A rumble vibrated through the black beast’s chest as he closed in on the mouth of the cave. Now the size of a pony, the direwolf leapt up two ridges to cast his gaze down upon the creature. The sickly sweet scent was growing stronger, it was all Shaggydog could now smell. A snarl parted the beast’s lips as he watched unblinkingly for movement.
And then he spotted it.
Shaggydog’s belly did not rumble, but in his throat held a growl which bounced and echoed through the highest peaks of the cave. Wide mossy eyes stood brightly beside beads of crimson as bats hung witness; in a blink, the green-eyed demon disappeared as he prowled further into the darkness, only to reappear above the child.
