sinbad and merlin's relationship (some thoughts)

i've been thinking about how despite being one of the only people to betray merlin, sinbad ended up as the most loyal person in merlin's life. he didn't know who merlin was, and so treated merlin like he'd treat anyone else.

i know plenty of characters wouldn't care about merlin if he was not THE merlin (cassade wouldn't care, valen, i think he still would but it's complicated, i think at the start he wouldn't care but through being together for so long his mind changed).

sonja and lucca would've dropped merlin like a rotten fish if he hadn't done so much for them.

sinbad? well, merlin did do sinbad some favors, but sinbad did plenty in return. sinbad and merlin are on even ground moreso than merlin is with anyone else (besides hogan)- they went through some wild shit together.

and sinbad so vehemently trusts merlin, it's almost sickening. he doesn't trust merlin only in the magical department, no, he trusts him personally. merlin still has that damn anchor pendant! and that's sinbad's prized possession. he wouldn't give something like that to some random person. not to mention spilling his backstory and being all anxious around his moms.

merlin is special to sinbad not because he's merlin or a useful tool, but because merlin is his only true friend.

Begging

He had to be perfect for you.

Cyran pivoted slowly in the mirror. New robes dotted with flawless gems. His staff polished to brillance. Hair washed and styled, not a strand of out place. Topping everything off was a gentle puff of perfume that lingered in his wake. Strong yet subtle, it was a reminder of the presence he held.

You were only going to see him at his best.

The guards nodded to him as he passed. No one would question him, not when he was clearly next to take the position of Chief Court Mage. It was not a matter of if, but when. Unfortunately, seizing the position with murder was frowned upon in the palace, so Cyran had to bide his time. The opportunity would arrive soon enough, starting with your request to meet tonight.

It was a cloudy night tonight. Your favourite constellations were all absent. He’d take that as a sign that the night was going to go in his favour.

The Lyceum graveyard was quiet when he arrived.

You were already there. Standing silently under the cover of a yew tree, dressed in that hermit outfit that he despised so much. Even at this distance, he could discern your knotted brow. His lips quirked the tiniest bit. It was all going very well, indeed.

“Cyran.”

With anyone else, he would have taken steps to confirm their identity. There was no need to with you. Even if there were a hundred identical Merlins standing before him, he would know who was the right Merlin. How could he not, when they had slept side by side for years?

“Magister Merlin.” Cyran responded smoothly.

That flicker of hurt in your eyes. He kept telling you not to wear your emotions on your face. But you just never learned. How did you ever manage to hold such an important position with such a fragile heart?

“War is coming.” You cut straight to the point. “We need you, Cyran. Esperia needs you.”

“The Court is aware of the Hypogean invasion. We have taken measures as necessary to defend against them.”

Frustration flashed in your face. “The Court moves too slowly, Cyran. You know that. The noble families will put the safety of the villagers last. We need to start defending the remote villages first, not wait until the fire reaches the city.”

Villagers? Oh yes, they were important. Who else would sow the grain and feed the pigs? Who else would fell trees and mine stones? Who else would take the brunt of the Hypogeans’ initial attacks?

“His Majesty is doing all he can. Rest assured that all of the King’s subjects will be protected.”

You stepped closer. The wind blew hard, tearing at your humble clothes. A discreet glance told him you had lost weight. Were you finally realising that the position of Merlin was too heavy for you?

“Cyran, you know you can act independently of the throne. We’re not asking you to betray the throne. We’re just asking you to lend us your strength. We need every mage we can get to win this war.”

“As a court mage, I am bound to act when the throne demands it, not behind their back.”

Height was one the few things he could claim superiority against you. He liked the way you had to crane your neck to look up at him. It was a position that suited you.

“Cyran, please. Nobody can sit out this war and remain unaffected.”

“Are you begging, Magister Supreme?”

Your flinch pleased him immensely. This was how it should have been long ago; you realising that you were not enough to hold the position of Merlin. Mastery of magic could not be measured merely by academic standards. He understood your magic as well as you did his. He was more than enough to be your equal.

To be Merlin, Magister Supreme.

The hurt flashed clear on your face, and then you stepped back, letting the chilly wind get in between. At this distance, you were once again Merlin, Magister Supreme and First Seat of the Council. Gone was the pleading in your eyes.

“I see that I’ve overestimated you.” Your tone was crisp and formal. “My apologies for disturbing your night. Good night, Magister Cyran.”

You opened a portal and left through it. Alone in the graveyard, the slight pang in his chest was overshadowed by the taste of victory.

This was not the end. You were not the type to give up easily. What methods would you employ next to persuade him? A thrill ran through him at that thought.

I’ll be waiting, Merlin.

I feel like so many posts from “writing communities” focus on how much writers hate writing. “When you’re daydreaming about your WIP, and remember that you actually have to write it!”, or “I have an entire folder in my Notes App dedicated to worldbuilding and vague ideas, but no actual writing done!”, and, quite frequently, “I’m only writing this book to get to the big confrontation scene at the end!”

And perhaps that would be fine if they were only peppered in to the general collective of posts. But it seems like it’s all some of you talk about, and it’s disheartening, and, honestly, a bit annoying. Are we even in a writing community, anymore? Because it feels like we aren’t, sometimes.

So I want to take a moment to sprinkle in a little of the opposite sentiment, for anyone who feels the same way. Because I feel like I’m going insane here.

I like writing. I like putting down words on the page. I like writing room descriptions and physical descriptions. I like describing the actions a character takes. I like imbuing those things with tone, and weaving the theme in. I like writing. It’s why I’m a writer.

I don’t see the early to middle chapters of a work as a means to an end. I don’t view writing as a slog - Some days it’s something that I clock into like a job, sure; Some days I don’t want to write. But most of the time I enjoy it. I wouldn’t be doing it otherwise.

I’m not writing a book just because I can’t make a movie or TV show - I like the written form. I read, frequently. I notice things in books that I want to replicate in my own, or steer clear of. I like words. I don’t feel like I should have to say that I like words! I’m a writer! But I do, so I will! I like reading them, and I like writing them! Because I wouldn’t make something my life’s purpose if I didn’t like doing it!

Writing is awesome! Words are awesome! I’m tired of seeing negativity everywhere!
