cause from what I've witnessed, whenever I check the gourmand tag I keep seeing some ppl draw this guy... skinny for some reason which is insane to me??? like please no. you're just stripping away a part of his character that makes him the way he is, HIS NAME IS GASTON GOURMAND FOR A REASON

i think it's pretty obvious what his name is supposed to mean, like look at the guy, why do you think they designed him this way💀

there is no excuse that it doesn't fit an artstyle, it CAN work out, believe me. like listen, if you draw him skinny, I'm just gonna 100% assume you're just drawing his rival that he fucking HATES because I know that ain't him LMFAOO

all I'll say is: to the people and mutuals I know who actually try and draw the guy FAT like he's supposed to be built, just know I appreciate you so much for giving him his actual canon appearance and not turning him into a whole different person that I don't recognize

his shape language and whole ass design behind gourmand is what makes him absolutely wonderful to me, and why he's my favorite character <333 (the same applies for the rest of the villains and henchmen as well, it's why I love their designs in the first place :D)

Big ramble below

The reason why I barely drew him before is because I struggled on a design and characterization; finally had the idea to lean heavily into the butcher aspect of his business.

I did some light research on what butchers wear. I saw a picture of two different sized gloves and I thought that was really cool. There are gloves made specifically for protecting the hands when cutting the meat, but I think Gourmand would have either enough skill or pride that he’d forego gloves. The gloves would mostly be to protect the hands when handling animals alive; the story behind how he lost his fingers is one I hope to tell in the future :)

The general theme I wanted to design him around is a villain that would make the crew afraid. Sure, Zach has dangerous tech, but he’d never do serious damage to the crew: it’s really Aviva he’s focused on, and that’s a rivalry between them.

Gourmand on the other hand, couldn’t care less about what happens to the crew. They’re just obstacles in the way of his work, and he is nothing if not incredibly determined. He sees it as personal, and thus gets highly aggressive. I would imagine he’s adopted a very anatomical, detached approach towards the more gruesome aspect of his work. It’s all for the end goal: a delicious dish. Considering the fact he also hunts for his own meat, I think he’d have a considerable amount of knowledge about wildlife to make him a challenge; generally the crew can get by through the villain’s ignorance. If they want to be act like animals, he’ll treat them like one (aka very badly). So activating suits around him comes with a unique risk.

Gaston, darling, I don't think that's how handshakes work, but I'm not French, so I won't comment.

My girls! We have a new chapter, I hope you enjoyed it. There have certainly been some important statements, although we'll have to wait to hear the response. As an aside, all the dishes Gaton prepared are part of French cuisine that are currently considered gourmet, but which are actually made with inexpensive ingredients, from humble origins, or born from attempts to avoid wasting ingredients. On the other hand, the desserts he offers to make for Chris are all of German origin due to the Kratt family's ancestry. Perhaps someone has researched info from their crush too much.

By the way, for those of you on the aromantic spectrum, do you also feel you have to lean towards a more or less poetic writing style when it comes to describing crushes and romance? I feel like it's the only way I can approach it in a way that sounds realistic to myself, given the huge fuss people make about it. It was a bit difficult to write this chapter for that very reason, but I think it turned out well in the end. Even if the process looked like this:

Wild Kratts: The danger of love - PART 1

Sweet heavens, this has taken a while, but I'm happy with the result, a short comic to start showing Chris's perspective. And damn, it really shows how aroace i am when it comes to writing, because my entire line of thought when making this was:

Chris is an experienced biologist and field researcher. Should he make him think about Gaston just because? NAHH. It has to be because there's a change in his behavior pattern and it challenges preconceived notions about him. This is scientific curiosity at its best. We've seen how he's put his life at risk to solve mysteries several times in the series; I don't think that's going to stop now. The thing is… What he'll discover if he decides to investigate Gourmand's behavior further? That's a different story.

And what can I say about Gaston? His head is a complete mess right now. There's no normal way to handle a crush on an enemy without going to extremes. It's not normal for him to be tormented by guilt, but nothing has been normal for him in the last few months. Maybe an apology would help… But how? I hope you liked it. We'll continue with that story another day! BYEE
