         “fine, then, i will.” she’s just as stubborn as he is, and even if it isn’t true that she has nothing better to do (she could be sitting with mary and lily, laughing, sharing candy off the cart) she won’t admit it now. now, she’s determined. now he’s stuck with her. at least they have the compartment to themselves now. at least there’s that. she kicks her feet up to rest on the opposite seat, but glances at him side-long. and though she doesn’t move any closer, doesn’t take his hand directly, she sets hers down between them. “even if you are planning to ignore me the whole way. snarl at me all you like.”

𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙤  𝙖𝙣𝙙  𝙗𝙤𝙡𝙞𝙣  𝙖𝙧𝙚  𝙘𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙚  𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢  𝙩𝙝𝙚  𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩,  𝙗𝙪𝙩  𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜  𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧  𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨  𝙖𝙙𝙙𝙨  𝙣𝙚𝙬  𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨  𝙩𝙤  𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙞𝙧  𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥,  𝙗𝙤𝙩𝙝  𝙜𝙤𝙤𝙙  𝙖𝙣𝙙  𝙗𝙖𝙙.   first of all, as a firstborn child  —  and one that, to our knowledge and my personal headcanons, is a firstborn child in a lower income family  —  mako is already very protective of his brother and likely spends some time already ‘watching’ or taking care of bolin, even though he’s only eight when his parents are killed.  however, after san and naoki’s deaths, mako is legitimately bolin’s caretaker.  this adds strains of parenthood onto their relationship, not to mention the strains of survival, starvation, and neglect while living and trying to keep each other alive on the streets of a very harsh, very busy city.  mako is a good brother, just like bolin is a good brother;  but mako isn’t a perfect brother, and that first year sets up a lot of issues that shape mako’s flaws and the flaws in mako and bolin’s relationship because their literal development and growth as people are traumatically interrupted and disrupted forever. 

THIS IS HOW I VIEW THE IMMEDIATE AFTERMATH / FIRST YEAR OF MAKO AND BOLIN’S RELATIONSHIP AFTER LOSING THEIR PARENTS: 

mako takes bolin straight from their apartment to the streets, but they’re picked up shortly after by some cops and dropped off at a city orphanage. 

like mako fears, they are separated almost immediately, not just because of their ages but because of their respective bending elements. 

bolin fares better in that environment, being cuter and sweeter than mako, also not being a firebender / looking fire nation, but neither of them do well in the very poor, very bad orphanage, and they run away together after a couple of months. 

they try begging on the streets, but only bolin has any success with that;  mako gets little odd jobs around the city through lying about his age or through employers not caring about his age, but he doesn’t really like to let bolin work;  he sweeps shops and scrubs floors and takes out trash, and he also works in a textile factory or two. 

mako and bolin move around a lot during that first year, since they’re so small and a lot weaker than a lot of other street kids, in spite of their bending. 

that first year is mostly focused on survival and adjustment, and there isn’t really even time for mako and bolin to grieve their parents;  they actually never talk about naoki and san that whole first year after mako gives bolin a very brief and non-descriptive explanation of what happens when he comes home singed and sobbing and clutching his father’s scarf. 

mako starts his practice of taking less food than bolin, and he looks way worse / skinnier than his brother most of the time  —  a practice and trend that never really stops, no matter how much bolin tries to insist mako take care of himself.
