Okay so! Since the marchenghast storyline is now canonically(!!!!!) tied to the sixth hammer and since i am the self proclaimed #1 Rosalinda enjoyer I need to throw out one more out-there theory before the Wednesday lore drop.
Introducing Chekhov’s mom theory
If a concept is set up in a story, it should lead to a payoff where the concept is brought back and elaborated on.
Abigail opens up to MC about her mother being a casualty in the witch-noble conflict. In another quest, she also says “Perhaps she was wrong…” without explaining who this “she” is. My current theory is that these two past-tense characters are not only one and the same, but that they are also Rosalinda.
Evidence 1: A satisfying narrative. We wouldn’t be so ambiguous about this mysterious “she” if we weren’t setting up for a reveal later. We also wouldn’t need to specifically mention Abigail’s mother it wasn’t going to be relevant later; Abigail could just talk about the “many losses” just like Margaret did. There aren’t many characters we’ve been introduced to who would both make logical sense in this role and serve as an impactful reveal, but Rosalinda does both. Just the fact that Abigail brought up the Sixth Hammer for the first time since it was introduced in the light ride quests already ties Rosalinda into the Marchenghast storyline.
Evidence 2: The timeline matches. We got a timestamp! Marchenghast is currently in 1823, 25 years after Rosalinda’s death. If Abigail was a kid when Rosalinda died, it makes complete sense for her to now be the young adult she is in-game.
Evidence 3: Family descriptions. In The Legend Awakens, we learn that Rosalinda’s family “was once one of the most powerful on Jorvik”. The Marchenghast family is described as “The once all-powerful Marchenghast family”. These descriptions feel just a little too similar to be incidental. It should also be mentioned that Mr Sands sits with Rosalinda’s mother and sister at her funeral, and that no father is mentioned. Considering what we know about how the dukes of Marchenghast worked together with the Sixth Hammer, it sure is interesting that Rosalinda’s father is completely ommitted from Mr Sands’ description of the funeral.
Evidence 4: Appearance. We know very little about what Rosalinda looked like; the only thing we know is that she had dark hair. In Darkness Falling, she is said to somewhat resemble Sabine. Idk about you but if I were to find one NPC with similar vibes to Abigail..
Evidence 5: Impact on the past and future of the main story. How would this twist recontextualise Rosalinda as a character? The only things we knew about her before were her role as a love interest and that she was curious and intelectual. If Rosalinda, a noble, was allied witch the witches and raised her daughter to believe that it was impossible to broker peace with the Marchenghast family, that gives her character far more agency and adds another layer of tragedy to the conflict. It also has some MAJOR implications for the main story because. Like. We know who the father would be in this case. Does he know? If he’s not dead from portal-itis, what would his reaction be to see his daughter and the rest of Rosalinda’s family alive? What does this say about the duke? If Rosalinda was a Marchenghast, is that another reason for the duke to keep the archive closed to Margaret?
From the minor details to the major story beats, this just feels like what they’re setting up. Maybe Im wrong, maybe Im right. What I do know is that Ive had more fun with thinking about Marchenghast lore than Ive had with any other recent questline, and I want to give major props to lead narrative designer Greg Moreau for putting so much care into expanding a story I care about in a meaningful way.
YES
Everything lines up too perfectly.
The narrative team really did an excellent job with Marchenghast. I was sad to read in his blog post that some “connections to the larger lore of Jorvik” had to be cut from the story (which just leads me to further believe the Rosalinda theory is 100% correct), but hopefully we’ll see those cut pieces at some point in the future.
I feel like a guy pointing out that red riding hood's grandma is actually the wolf
But Trude's Hut and Gertrude Alley were most definitely named after the same person.
Abigail mentioned that the coven has banished witches before. And if this Gertrude was a ex-witch who came to live in the castle, in a significant enough position to have an alley named after her - what are the chances that Margarete is half-witch on her mother's side?
Hmm
Perhaps not the mother, then. But lady certainly was not afraid to jump factions
could be like a family name (it's not too uncommon in germanic cultures which this place is mostly inspired by) so it's a relative of some sort. trude is a nickname form of gertrude so it seems fair to assume it's a name passed down the generations if it's not named after the same person.
you see what shocks you
so it's possible it's named after two different people, but of the same family line. hence the different roles; one of them is a direct ex-witch ("trude") and one is a part-witch who's managed to get into the royal family ("gertrude")'
or it's just the same person idk

SSOblrs Favorite Hollow Woods Magical Horse Breeds
This time I will go from the bottom to the top!
At sixth and last place we have Antheia!
I wonder why it become last. Maybe its the colors, or maybe people just like other breeds more.
At fifth place theres Tynan!
I do like magic horse that are more simple so Im happy we have Tynan. But seems like other people dont have the same thought.
Forth place has three breeds that got tied! Hanami, Birkir and Hemera!
Personally I think I like Birkir the most of these three, something with its design is just adorable. But I think its interesting that the tree horses got tied.
Now to the first medal! Phoebe is on third place!
The green light from underneath is a very nice detail of this breed!
Our silver medalist is the one and only Erinys!
The strong contrast in Erinys rock texture is so perfect and I also love the black and purple colores~
And last but not least! At first place we have ofcourse~ PETRA!
The details of the stone, the soft looking moss, the glowing runes~ Whats not to love with this gentle gigant?
Did you think the right breed win? Please do share your thoughts of your favorite and least favorite magic breeds of Hollow Woods!
I used to be a staunch believer of Rosalinda Silverglade but yknow Rosalinda von Marchenghast has a nice ring to it. ’The nobles had witch hunts in the late 18th century’ is just way too specific to not be related to the character who famously died after a witch trial in the late 18th century.
Spoilers for todays quest:
So. Um. Sixth hammer mention by Abigail today. I am clawing at the walls
For the uninitiated: the sixth hammer has been mentioned before once, in the legend awakens. Theyre the group that sentenced Rosalinda.
All Im saying is I CALLED IT
down bad for another blonde girl with weird ties to pandoria 😔
Just looked at how much space my raw sso video clips are taking up and it's... most of the memory on my computer. >_>
I've been meaning to make another sso music video for a while now, and after that I probably should delete a bunch of these...
Yes, I could save them on an external hard drive. I own an external hard drive. It holds 500 GB.
But fraps saves bigass chunky avi files and I've been recording cutscenes and bits of scenic rides for 13 years. I have 622 GB of sso video clips.
I could probably also convert them all to a smaller file type, but that sounds horribly tedious.
Handbrake is a program that I use to keep the size of my own recordings manageable. You can fine-tune quality/file size. You can save a preset and then just convert everything in bulk. It might take a while, but it's not really tedious
I kinda want a cafe either in the hidden village or in the castle but all it sells are things like water, one boiled potato and piece of dry bread.
Just very plain and tastless things.
Controversial take maybe but Margarete is way less of a #badgirl than Abigail is
Margarete is literally 24/7 going yes yes let's be nice and help out I want to help out and convince my dad that we can be nice and that all hope isn't lost. Oh great MC you know stuff tell me how I can help :3 <- girlie who is so eager to do the right thing probably because she's probably being told by her dad that she's stupid and naive (as is literally canon) and that she should just stop clinging to hope and see facts (ALSO I LOVE THE WHOLE "Oh shit maybe we can use the lanterns as a base to develop some science lanterns to permanently dispell the rot)
Meanwhile Abigail's Skeptical as Hell like :/ Oh u wanna work with the castle people too? Idonno bro that sounds kinda optimistic but sure bro do whatever as long as the forest and animals are fine. Which is ALSO really good and reasonable because SHE lost her mom to the fighting and is, unlike the Marchenghast people, living in constant threat of exposure to the rot (as opposed to the castle which seems more or less safe on the prospect of being A Castle Made of Stone) so she Would be skeptical and she would be careful because compared to Margarete she has much more to lose even if they both have everything to gain (not that either part Knows that or is fully admitting it yet but but)
Which is ALSO reflected in their new dailies, the witches are just "continue doing your thing with helping the animals" while the castle people have "Okay how can we start interacting with the animals and how do we Help Out on the other side of the wall"? Which isn't a dig at the witches it's just really interesting to see how Margarete and Abigail really have the opposite attitudes of their people so to speak (A lot of the witches we meet are "nicer" and more open to cooperation and MC being there than Abigail while Margarete is obviously dealing with The group of biggest skeptics)
Idonno they're very fun and I can't wait to see how this all gets flunked by Margarete's dad appearing in person and telling all of us to go kill ourselves /j but also like-
marchenghast has brought me back from the dead. huzzah
i made some portraits. i don't particularly like the margarete one but i've already made it so here you go
marchenghast has it's fair share of bones but...
