“mo-mother i told you, you don’t have to come out here. i’ve got --” the boy heaved a sigh as the line went dead, cutting short what would have been the third call from his mother that weekend. it’d been three months since he’d actually seen the woman -- something she reminded him of constantly. it wasn’t his fault edmonton was such a stretch away. he’d only been off the phone for a moment before he spotted a young gentleman mumbling  to himself just inside the lobby’s foyer. “what ?? oh -- yeah, yeah. nice enough.” he mused, glancing back from where he came out into the morning hustle of just another vancouver city street. “do you make it a habit, talking to yourself ?? i dunno how good of a conversationalist a painting can be.”

“ it is strange, but i mean, now we could start a ‘bad luck’ squad. you got stuck in an elevator more than once in the last few days, and you’re still too lazy to take the stairs ? i like you already. that’s me, yep. a plastic bubble sounds fun, and safe, in my case. getting one might be a problem, though, so for now i’ll stick to taking the stairs. ”

“okay, but if it starts getting to be too big, we’re going to have to alert the authorities to make sure shit stays safe. ya’know -- because it can’t be a great idea having that many bad luck magnets confined to one area for too long. i’m glad i have your approval. do i get something for being well liked, or is it just a self-satisfaction kinda deal ?? i’m sure you’ll stumble across one someday in your travels. but that doesn’t sound like a bad idea at all. be sure to keep me posted on how that works for you.”

“Bet you’re on first name basis with the maintenace dude now. They really need to get that fucking elevator fixed, or think about upgrading the staircase to an escalator. I had to carry a case of water bottles up five flights the other day. Great for my arm muscles, but terrible for my ego. I just barely made it up two flights before I ditched more than half the case.”
