the aroace read of ryland grace is so personal and haunting. "you don't even have a dog." was it not enough to love the world for the sake of living in it. was it not enough to live for the thrill of discovery. was it not enough to smile at your students. was it not enough to be afraid.

I really think that Project Hail Mary is truly an important movie to come out at this exact time with all that it going on in the world. Take AI for instance and all the growing dependence on it and its presence in creative works. Then, look at this movie that refused to even use CGI or green screen. They made an intricate puppet and hired five puppeteers. They even had one of them do the voice for the puppet despite not being "famous." They took the time to make a whole space ship to bring authenticity to the movie. So much of this was done out of pure love of film, love of storytelling, and love of art. We need that now more than ever, and to have it in such an instantly popular movie is even better. That's not even to talk about how important the story itself is right now. It shows people coming together in the face of hardship. It shows the power of empathy and hope. It shows people helping each other despite differences and working to save people who haven't done anything for them personally. Ryland Grace has been given no reason to want to help Stratt's mission go through from the way he has been treated, but he does it anyway because humanity at its core is good. Rocky is trying to save his own world, but he doesn't hesitate to help Grace save his own too. They find each other in the face of solitude and are able to connect through their shared mission. They repeatedly choose to help each other even when it isn't in their own best interest, and they both choose not only to save their own world but each other's. It's so hopeful. It's so full of love and sacrifice, and it shows that sacrifice doesn't always have to mean you don't get to live. It's about empathy and helping others, and I think the world needs to hear about that right now. This movie is so important especially in the context of now. It gives me hope. This is a movie that shows that there is hope for humanity and that humanity can be good, and it shows that humanity is necessary in art and film to get a result like this.

i really im absolutely astounded at the phenomenal job that MIB did not to be racist against aliens, despite being a movie about secret agents chasing evil aliens. that scene where jay helps an alien mother to give birth is probably one of the most humanizing moments for an Other ive seen in a movie ever.

The movie has a real love for NYC and immigrant culture as a part of that. The opening scene where K welcomes the undocumented immigrants to the United States. One alien greets another and says he's ordered him pierogi. A lot of them are refugees from their home worlds who just want to survive.

Just. For just some very baseline context.

a huge amount of code is "open source" - which means the code is fully available for anyone to see and, generally, anyone is free to contribute to the code project

all contributions of course go through review by the code owners. but it is generally good grace and good form to allow other well-meaning internet strangers to contribute to your project

if you are, perhaps, VERY nice, and VERY invested in the community, you might be like Scott Shambaugh here, who has intentionally earmarked some low-hanging fruit for newbie contributors to practice and get their feet wet

like I cannot overstate this is an immediate green flag, to me, that Scott WANTS to foster community learning.

This is about much more than software. A human googling my name and seeing that post would probably be extremely confused about what was happening, but would (hopefully) ask me about it or click through to github and understand the situation. What would another agent searching the internet think? When HR at my next job asks ChatGPT to review my application, will it find the post, sympathize with a fellow AI, and report back that I’m a prejudiced hypocrite? What if I actually did have dirt on me that an AI could leverage? What could it make me do? How many people have open social media accounts, reused usernames, and no idea that AI could connect those dots to find out things no one knows? How many people, upon receiving a text that knew intimate details about their lives, would send $10k to a bitcoin address to avoid having an affair exposed? How many people would do that to avoid a fake accusation? What if that accusation was sent to your loved ones with an incriminating AI-generated picture with your face on it? Smear campaigns work. Living a life above reproach will not defend you.

Also, because the parody writes itself, Scott also says this

Ars Technica wasn’t one of the ones that reached out to me, but I especially thought this piece from them was interesting (since taken down – here’s the archive link). They had some nice quotes from my blog post explaining what was going on. The problem is that these quotes were not written by me, never existed, and appear to be AI hallucinations themselves. This blog you’re on right now is set up to block AI agents from scraping it (I actually spent some time yesterday trying to disable that but couldn’t figure out how). My guess is that the authors asked ChatGPT or similar to either go grab quotes or write the article wholesale. When it couldn’t access the page it generated these plausible quotes instead, and no fact check was performed. I won’t name the authors here. Ars, please issue a correction and an explanation of what happened.

A news outlet did an article about this, used AI for the articles, and included hallucinated quotes from Scott that Scott never said.

It's not "gaining sentience" it's copying its training data. This results in creating a lot of the same problems as hordes of lazy, petty, angry people who don't know what they're doing, without the limitation of needing the actual people to produce those outcomes on that scale.

This is such a massive fail for Ars Technica that it's almost funny. I hope whoever put their name on that one got fired. They didn't even check that the quotes existed? Neither did the editor? I can't imagine a more embarrassing way to tank the credibility of a tech reporting site.
