You're Interesting || Willa & Tabby
Tabby sat at one of the many picnic tables around the campus and drummed her fingers on the worn down wood lightly.
‘Come to campus with me,’ Jack said. ‘It’ll be fun,’ he said. ‘I’ll set you up with an advisor to talk classes,’ he said. ‘You’ll love it,’ he said.
The advisor only said all the things Tabby had wanted to hear. That the photography classes would be a lot of independent work and ladeedadeeda—etcetera. Anything of what the older man said had yet to catch her appeal. It was boring, to say the least. What she did notice, however, was how much she enjoyed the feel of the campus. It was nice to be in an atmosphere of learning again; it was buzzing. There was only one high school in her town, so it had to be the appropriate size. She had never gone to college, but her high school was big and spread out, much like the campus here. Maybe not as big, but the tiniest bit of familiarity automatically made Tabby feel comfortable. But before she could think about classes, she had to get a job to pay for them.
I wonder if there are any photographers in need of assistants?
Or she could work in a coffee shop. Or she could look into any local newspapers and see if they’re lacking photographers for whatever they need. All she wanted was to do anything photography-related. She wanted to be the best that she could be and the only way of doing so would be to take photos, photos, photos and more photos. Practice makes perfect. It was a cliché phrase, but it was something that always rang through Tabby’s thoughts as if it were her own.
The only reason why she was even there was to do something with her life. Classes seemed like a viable option, as she was somewhat fresh out of high school and still open to learning new things. What things, exactly? Photography…Filmmaking…Even going into some culinary field didn’t seem like such a bad idea. Tabby was always baking and making things just so she could take photos of them. Suddenly the list of her options grew bigger.
She took a deep breath, downed the rest of her tea, pulled out her SLR camera from her bag, stood up and decided to amble around for anything interesting to capture. Jack told her the way back home if she decided to leave before he was out of class—two hours from now—and this time she actually felt sure about the directions. Tabby was always easy to get lost; usually she was to enraptured in her own world to notice where she was going. Manhattan was one of those places where she would get lost in on a weekly basis, even if she did live in it.
Looking around at all the students milling about in different directions, sometimes chatting with friends or choosing the solitary route and going off alone. Tabby’s index finger itched to press that shutter button, but she bit her lip, narrowing her eyes intently for some inspiration to come.
Willa was enjoying the day. She had finished a class and decided that she was going to enjoy a book in one of the campus outdoor courtyards. There were plenty of other students about, most of them moving quickly to get to class or to get back home. It was kind of nice not having to be one of them and having the time to just relax.
She glanced about at the other students that were just lazing about as well. It was then that she noticed a girl with a camera who seemed to be taking pictures of the area. She tilted her head and watched her for a few moments, wondering why on Earth she would want pictures of a bunch of students.
She replaced the book in her bag, stood, and started walking over to the girl. As she approached she smiled and said casually," I'm sure there are a lot more interesting things to photograph about the city than a bunch of kids rushing to their class."
