can’t stop thinking about how, based on el’s letter at the beginning of s4, mike had to have been thinking the whole time he saw will carrying around that painting that it was meant to be given to someone– some girl– he has a thing for. so when will gives it to HIM in the van, and it’s unrolled to prove that it’s definitely exclusively for him, it HAS to be implied that will has been thinking about him this entire time, all these months, that he’s been “acting weird” because of those thoughts and, most importantly, that mike has to be the object of his desire so to speak. It proves that will wasn’t trying to pull away from him at all– in fact, quite the opposite. And despite their unresolved fight in the rain in s3 where mike seemed to push dnd and such away for being childish– will still has enough faith in him, enough love for him, to spend all that time painting his feelings into a dnd-related painting in the hopes that the will that he knows and loves will come back to him and appreciate it like he has with will’s art time and time before. And of course he appreciates it– will was RIGHT in his intentions/hopes painting it in the first place. Mike lights up at the sight of it, enamored, stunned, over the fucking moon with all that that painting means– all that it communicates, confirms, affirms.
And then will panics. Worried about the dire consequences of rejection despite the positive response, and perhaps worried as well that he’s selfish and wrong for making a move on his best friend while he’s still in a relationship with his stepsister. He can’t do that to her. And he thinks if mike realizes what he’s done he’ll be offended and offput, to him rightfully so. He does what he believes is the right thing to do and claims it was commissioned by el.
