Hopper’s proposal is another example of the poor treatment of female characters in Stranger Things. Often in media, women have two options: marry or die. El dies and Joyce gets engaged. Both of these events revolve around Hopper rather than the women themselves. Hopper is sad that he lost his daughter, but what about El? How sad was she when she made the choice to die? The engagement is clearly Hopper’s desire, because he proposed. However, is that truly the best ending for Joyce? To the writers, that question doesn’t matter. Joyce lived, so she must remarry.

We should've known that the Duffers didn't give a shit about Will when it was revealed that Lonnie was meant to be the one to save Jonathan and Nancy from the demogorgon in season 1. It was changed to be Steve during production because they liked Joe Keery's portrayal so much.

Lonnie, the man who abandoned his family and called Will gay slurs, was meant to get a redemption moment.

Wishful thinking kept us from seeing the Duffers for who they really are all along.
