Why Will is going to have a villain arc in part 2 and how this could lead to a byler confession
I'm back with another byler theory and this one has been scratching at my brain for the past few days as I try to put the pieces together.
We were all shocked during the end of season 5 when Will managed to take control of the hive mind and use it against Vecna with his new powers. But I noticed something whilst rewatching the scene.
We were teased with certain clips of Will and Vecna in the official trailer. Of course, these were taken out of context. HOWEVER, one thing stuck out to me about what they showed in the trailer.
The clips are dubbed over with Vecna's voice saying the phrase "William, you are going to help me one last time"
Only... Vecna never says that. He doesn't say it in those scenes or in any of part 1. This means they took this from a scene in part 2. "You are going to help me one last time" is very clearly indicating that he will use Will as a spy just like he did in season 2. However, I don't believe the way he uses him will be the exact same.
In season 2, Vecna (or the mind flayer as we knew at the time) used Will as a spy to lure the soldiers into the tunnel system as to stop the military from tampering with the upside down. Now the circumstances have changed and he's going to need Will for a different use. But what?
First off, I don't think Will is going to "just be" a spy. Vecna can tap into the minds of others- we've seen it with Holly and Will already in this season. He doesn't necessarily need Will to see what the others are doing or planning. Sure, he could do that, but he can use Will for something much greater.
He could use Will as a vessel.
Vecna is planning something big and for some unknown reason, he barely leaves the upside down. The only time we've seen him was when he exited the gate from the Mac-Z to revive the demogorgons and taunt Will. This means that what he is currently working on requires him to be in a specific hideout. This is why he uses the demogorgons as his henchmen to take the children instead of directly getting them himself.
If Will can control the hive mind, it can be the same visa versa. Vecna can control HIM. But what would he need him for? The simplest answer is to sabotage the group in order to slow down their plans. But I believe there is one thing Vecna could force Will to do.
Vecna is going to have Will attempt to kill Mike.
Yes, this is a bit out there. But think of the benefits Vecna has if this plan is successful
This throws Eleven completely off guard as she loves Mike and could lose her focus if he dies
This directly hurts Nancy as it's her brother and leaves her without her entire family
Mike is a group leader and gets everyone to follow the plan. Without him, order could be thrown off. This also goes for the distraction of Nancy as she is a group leader as well
Most of all, it hurts Will. Will's powers are driven by love- that's how he harnesses them in the first place. Will is a major threat to Vecna seeing as he can control the hive mind. Killing Mike is one thing, but having Will kill Mike ensures that Will loses everything. Not only does he lose the boy he's in love with, he loses his sense of identity. He loses control in himself. And in the hopes of not hurting anyone again, he could give up on everything
We also know that Vecna is specifically targeting the Wheeler household. He shows Nancy visions of her family dying and he takes Holly as his first victim. The demogorgons also mutilate Ted and Karen. This leaves Mike as the last one Vecna can target.
Another key point is that Shawn Levy confirmed both Mike and Will are going to have large roles in season 5. Will's importance is obvious as he has these new powers he needs to control + the villain arc. But Mike? Currently his role is rather small. He's a group leader, sure. But so is Nancy.
Now, how is this circumstance going to lead into a byler confession (and potentially a kiss). Well, it all parallels back to season 2 back when Will was first possessed.
We all remember this beautiful scene. The love Will felt from Mike, Jonathan, and Joyce, gave him the power to semi break through the possession and tap his hand in morse code (the same hand that Mike held in a previous episode may I add).
Mike definitely remembers this. If he knows Will is under the influence of Vecna, he'll need to bring Will out of that trance with affirmations of their "friendships". But I don't believe those will be strong enough. After all, they weren't strong enough the first time. They only freed one of his hands. And Vecna has grown stronger- a simple "best friend" speech won't be enough. And I think Mike will realise this too.
Now, I do believe a confession of love could be strong enough to free Will of Vecna's control. But in the chance of it not, there's one thing that will definitely work.
Ok, hear me out. This isn't just me fangirling at the possibility of them kissing. I do think there is a lot of evidence for this being the way to get Will out of the trance.
First off, what I mentioned before. Will's hand that tapped morse code was the one that Mike held. So, physical contact such a kiss could work. But of course that's not a very strong argument. So, I present my favourite piece of evidence coming directly from season 5.
Ah, this beautiful beautiful line. I'm sure you've all heard the theories behind this one. It insinuates that Will would forgive his partner if they'd kiss him. (So cute I'm actually dying).
People use this to say that Mike and Will could be mid argument in a classic angsty byler fight when Mike just kisses him. But I think this could be more of a snow white situation. Mike's kiss would give Will the power to break free from the trance. A true loves kiss if you will.
I also think in general Mike's internalised homophobia is so intense he wouldn't go anything unless it were a life or death situation. And this situation is very much life or death.
