Here's a supremely cool show intro for the Rap Attack. This is the Wednesday March 6, 1985 edition. Magic's Wand by Whodini sets the tone.
Marley, you got the mixing gloves?
You know it!

Here's the early days of Mr. Magic declaring war against 98.7 KISS and DJ Red Alert. Sounds like the official declaration of radio battling! Wednesday May 1st, 1985 broadcast:
Guess we're gonna let the battle begin. Marlon, we gonna bust some lips this summer?
Join Super Rockin' Mr. Magic as I become the first official lip buster in metro New York.
I don't know, I kinda think the lips are FAKE

Here we have two separate Run-DMC King Of Rock era ads that were played on WHBI 105.9 during the Rap Attack show. This rip is from the Wednesday March 6, 1985 edition.
They rule with an iron mic. All hail the new kings of rock : Run-DMC! Run-DMC lay down the law on their razor sharp new album King Of Rock.

EARLY Stetsasonic interview and performance on the Wednesday May 1, 1985 edition of the Rap Attack. Magic asks them what they've been doing since they won a Coney Island talent contest.
We've just been hanging out with the Juice Crew... juicin'!
Early rare audio of one of rap's greatest groups ever!
Also included... Mr. Magic sign-off

ooo-OOOO!
MC Shan is in the house for the Friday May 15, 1987 edition of the Rap Attack. Magic and Shan were always close, and they used to room together on tours. You can tell they're natural with each other. Magic asks Shan about his recent show in Boston, and Shan throws a little dig at Chilly Q.

"Rap Attack trivia time, yeah you could win a Rap Attack gift pack with a brand new LP from the White Boys, "On A Mission," ... 'cause if you a white boy in rap you GOTTA BE on a mission...
... sorry about that"
Funny moment during the Friday May 13, 1988 edition of the rap attack. Seems like Magic gets distracted by that joke for a few moments.
Note Starrlite's handwritten message on the tape spine, "I went out with Ty :)"

Let's take it wayyy back to when Mr. Magic had the Private Line for requests during the show. This is from the June 30, 1983 broadcast, which is labeled as the 1st anniversary of the show. Sounds like that would mean the first anniversary of being on WBLS.
This request is for Whodini's Is It The Robot Or The Computer, officially titled Rap Machine.

Tuesday October 23, 1984 : Mr. Magic returns to WHBI 105.9 after his first stint on WBLS. He would later be re-hired by WBLS, but this is the in between time. This is actually his first night back on 105.9, aka Magic 106 FM.
Here is some excellent audio from the moments leading up to his return broadcast. You hear two advertisement spots of a non-rapper at the station trying his best to put together some "welcome back" rhymes for Magic. Also, another DJ at the station calls Magic up to the mic to interview him about his return. You can tell there is excitement in the air at WHBI, as they brag about the return of the "god pops of hip hop."
There's only one Mr. Magic... and guess who's got him... we do!

Here's an interview with the masters of longevity in the game, Full Force. This is taking it way back, and they're fresh off their appearance in the film Krush Groove. Rapping With The Stars on December 7, 1985!
Some early Craig G here that I don't think ever saw official release. My Swing Beat, from the December 27, 1986 edition of the Rap Attack.

Legendary audio from the first Awesome 2 broadcast after the tragic passing of Boogie Down Productions' Scott La Rock on August 27, 1987. Contains some heavy live audio of BDP w/ KRS kicking rhymes that would appear on My Philosophy. I haven't heard this live audio anywhere else. The Awesome 2 also speak on Scott La Rock, who they had just spent time with days ago.

Just wanted to point out a little tidbit here. Marley Marl In Control Volume 1 came out in 1988. Craig G's Duck Alert from the album has the line: I don't want his beats sounding like Hurby's Oops -- I mean Marley, cause Hurb's a beat-biter Here, on the December 30, 1988 countdown edition of the Mr. Magic Rap Attack, Magic and the crew name Hurby Luv Bug the producer of the year. This just kind of made me scratch my head, considering Marley Marl was Magic's DJ on the Rap Attack show. And In Control came out just months earlier. AND Magic had dissed Hurby on the show before previously. Hmmm... For the record, Public Enemy were named the male group of the year. Another instance of Magic giving props to Public Enemy after his initial no more music by the suckers dis.

I don't want his beats sounding like Hurby's Oops -- I mean Marley, cause Hurb's a beat-biter Although Mr. Magic would award Hurby Luv Bug with producer of the year on the December 30, 1988 edition of the show over a year later, the Juice Crew was still known to throw a shot or two at the Salt 'N' Pepa producer. Here's a dis Magic aimed at Hurby on the November 6, 1987 edition of the show. (The above line in italics is Craig G from Duck Alert)

Mikey D and the LA Posse are getting dissed by Mr. Magic on the November 6, 1987 edition of the Rap Attack. Multiple times. Just listen for yourself. C'mon, everybody knows LA is sauce Yo Marley, they're hard with Johnny Quest. It's like Magilla Gorilla. Johnny Quest. Are you serious or delirious? You ever hear of the Terminator? Baby!

Mr. Magic was buggin' out a lot on the December 6, 1987 edition of the Rap Attack. This is the sign off where he spontaneously calls Craig G on the mic to kick some freestyles. Rasta style, normal type and the beatbox. Many styles. Even Biz Markie style. Then Magic starts making Vaughn Harper blush. Peep this one!

From the October 24, 1987 edition of the Rap Attack, we have an interview with Charles Stettler, the manager of the Fat Boys. He also played Beiker in Krush Groove. Here, he presents Magic and Marley with a Fat Boys platinum plaque. He also talks about upcoming projects from the Boys, including a proposed horror movie Fat Wolf, as well as a Fat Boys cartoon called Super Fats. These didn't happen, right? This is followed by Magic's signature sign off message. You hear Stettler laugh and say "No cue cards!"

It's the intro to the October 24, 1987 edition of the Mr. Magic Rap Attack. Back in the day Magic and crew went hard against Red Alert and the rest of the crew "down the dial" at 98.7 KISS. The sound byte "KISS BUSTERS" was quite often heard in this era. This particular show kicks off with an immediate dis of sister station, as we hear an extended mix of the KISS BUSTERS concept. Ironic that it goes into Just-Ice / KRS' Going Way Back after the intro, the very same people that rode for Red Alert in the bridge wars and the same jam that got dissed HEAVY on the October 16, 1987 edition of the show.
